I am an American at an American medical school, but my medical school does not provide adequate liability coverage for the most institutions. I began a campaign and mobilized the deans to increase our coverage, but it is a statewide problem, and it goes right up to the board of regents of th university system. So, this may take longer than reasonable - too long for me to get registered for electives.

Where can I buy increased liability coverage? I talked to the Student Affairs office at UW Seattle today and they assures me that coverage is available "but they would not recommend an insurance carrier." Fine, at least provide a list or some resource - they suggested searching the internet! Comeon - search google for liability insurance medical and visiting student - not relevant results....

Apparently this problem has been overcome by multitudes before me...anyone who has experience with this problem - please advise.

I know my school (which is private) provides liability for most electives. However, I could understand why electives might not be funded for some state-subsidized schools.
By "most institutions", are there any exceptions? Perhaps the school you are doing the elective at would be willing to cover you instead?

It seems like it would be easier to pay a small liability fee to the school you are performing the elective at, since they may have a group rate.

Ive talked to seven programs who dont provide it and one that does. Baylor will cover you for $12. The rest say I have to get coverage on my own. These are great programs all over the country.

oh my god just when I think my school is sucking, I read this, and I realize another school sucks worse than mine at least in this respect. I cannot even imagine. I feel for you, dude.

The attitude of the Texas Board of regents is: Med students dont need that much coverage - the little that they do is heavily supervised. Plus, by providing such high coverage it makes them an attractive target.

Fine while at your home school, but by not providing an option to increase coverage while away it creates a roadblock for students trying to become competitive at other programs.
