Hi Everyone,

I haven't been here for a long time. I have been working 2 part-time jobs all summer till my work permit expires. My school refuses to extend my permit and I really need help with tuition for pharmacy school 🙁 I have to pay $12,000 per semester for the next 4 years. I really don't know what to do. I tried to look for scholarships, but a lot of them need citizenship or permanent residence that I don't have. I'm totally frustrated right now, even though I've heard that a lot of the big pharmacies offer scholarships for students for their last 2 professional years. Does that kind of scholarship really exist? Is it hard to get that kind of scholarship? Where can I find additional help? Please give me some advices.
Thank you +pity+

This might be a stupid question...but have you tried to apply for federal or private loans?

I know what you're going through; this is an awful situation for students with F-1 visa. My friends has the same problem, however, her mom is co-signing her right now. But because her mom is going back to her country soon, she might get married with her boyfriend of 2 years, that way she won't have to go through all this anymore.

You might have though about this already, but can't you change your status to asylum? Or find a significant other to co-sign you??? Or maybe married an American woman? I know I would have gotten married with an American man if I was in your situation. But Lenny Kravitz don?t get along with those women though :

"American woman
Stay away from me
American woman
Mama let me be
Don't come hanging around my door
I don't wanna see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growing old with you"

You gotta love Lenny Kravitz !!!!

Apply for pharmloan. go to aacp.org. We discussed about scholarships for pharmacy students, do a search on it. In the meantime, apply for pharmloan as it should help finance your education.

Except, he didn't write those lyrics. The song is a remake from the 70's hit by the Guess Who, a band from Canada.

She's going to yell at you.🙂

Thank you all for your suggestions 😍

Applying for loans in U.S. may not be as simple as everybody thinks. Foreign students have to face a lot of obstacles to obtain any kind of financial assistance in U.S. I don't think everybody would understand what foreign students have to go through in U.S. Not all foreign students have millionaire parents. American students have so many opportunities waiting for them all the time, but only foreign students know how not to take that kind of privileges for granted. 🙄

So what country are you from?
I know this may be another stupid question...but have you spoke with your school's financial aid office? Because I know that my school said that they will do whatever they can to help us figure out how we can pay for our school. So they might be an invaluable resource and have probably dealt with this situation many times.
Also, just because you're a foreigner does that mean you can't get private loans in the U.S.?? If you can't, then is there any way you can get a loan through one of your own country's lenders??
Maybe this all sounds naive but I really didn't realize it was that difficult for foreign students.
On another note your comment seemed kind of jaded against American students...trust us we don't take our loans for granted. And don't we all wish we had millionaire parents. Being American I've been pissed at the govt many times that because I am an average citizen (i.e. no out of wedlock pregnancies, no drug addictions, no arrests, and no welfare or foodstamps) I don't get special treatment (grants/scholarships) like all of the above examples get.
Furthermore, if I were to go to school in a foreign country it might be as hard for me as it is for you to get loans from that country. Then again I dont know about that...but I would assume it goes both ways.

😡 😡

I take offense to this statement. Never have I seen a question on any scholarship application that asked if I was born out of wedlock or if my parents are drug addicts. You can't choose your parents. I grew up in a city with high poverty levels, and everyday on my way to work I see homeless people begging for money with their children starving and dirty. And if those children want to go to college damn right the government needs to help them because they can't help themselves!!! They have to work just as hard to get high GPAs to qualify for the scholarships in the first place. I think that was the most ignorant post I've ever read on this forum. +pissed+

My mother had me when she was 17 and raised me by herself. I knew I had to do good in school so I wouldn't have to struggle like her. I got a scholarship to Texas A&M and was sure I would not end up like her. But, I made poor choices in my life, and I had a child out of wedlock right out of high school. I found out I was pregnant two weeks before I was supposed to move into my dorm. We married later and I had a second child even though I was on birth control, and I am divorced now. I worked hard in college to make sure my children (one of whom is autistic) would have a better life. It may have taken me 5 1/2 years instead of 4 to graduate because I was also working, but I did it. I did not get scholarships because I simply had children. I got scholarships because I worked my a@%$& off! My son has a mental disability and will probably get government assistance sometime in his life because he will not be able to care for himself. That is what america is about.

I think you do take things for granted. I think you take it for granted that your parents were not drug addicts. You should think about it and be thankful.

Or maybe you're just a republican.

I think you misread my post...I wasn't talking about someone's parents having those problems...I was talking about myself, the one applying for financial aid.
I agree that assistance is needed in many cases, however, my point was that it's not fair the govt doesnt see that I need grants just because my parents make over 30 grand and the govt assumes that my parents will pay for my college (btw i paid for my college all on my own and my undergrad has cost me 25grand in loans that arent paid off yet). Therefore, the only other way I could have received a grant was to prove that I had children, that I went to drug recovery clinics...etc. I was mostly speaking in terms of fedreal grants, not scholarships.
I am only saying this by my experiences with friends of mine taht have received federal pell grants and comparing their situation with mine. Sorry if my experiences aren't relavant to the way the whole system works.
I'm sorry you think my post is ignorant but this is a major problem with the way the govt hands out monies. Too bad my words were misunderstood, it's hard to express my long drawn out thoughts in a little post. And, I take offense to you calling me Republican...how dare you!!!
😉 Just kidding!

I would much rather have 25grand in loans right now than two children. And I still owe 11grand for undergrad.

The only thing I agree with is that the cutoff of 30grand for parent income needs to be raised. Who can survive off of that and put money away for college?

I just wanted you to think about what you were saying.

sorry for getting off the subject, clachan. That really lit a fire under me though.

I hope you can find a lender.

I have thought long about what I wrote, I wrote my opinions. I do not take things for granted and I have been nice and not rude to any of the posters.
And just so we don't get more posts on this topic, I never said and I dont know if the cutoff is 30 grand, so don't take my word for that.
I hope that I offered helpful suggestions to Clachan3 and I hope I clarified myself to you Karmapatrol.
Hopefully we can get back to Clachan's question...sorry I got off topic...where's my ritalin!!!!
🙂

Based on my husband's income, he is supposed to be able to contribute over $17,000 per year towards my education. So, I don't qualify for anything except non-subsidized student loans.

I would like to see all awards based on academic ability. That's why I went to private school for my BS degree, they gave scholarships based on your brain - not how much money you made.

I didn't apply to any of the school of pharmacy loans, because they were already earmarked for those with "financial need". That type of discrimination pisses me off. Just because I'm fairly well-off doesn't give them the right to deny me a scholarship.

Now there's a concept-

Working for (earning) what you receive.

THAT'S what America is about. Not the constant handouts that come out of the pockets of those that bettered themselves through their own hard work and sacrifice. I earn too much to be a democrat. And that's the way I see it-not that you'll agree.

(steps down off of soapbox)

KarmaPatrol:

Awesome post to respond to AmandaRX initially. I too, took offense to that as well. (and I LOVED the elephant comment)

AmandaRX: You definetly have what it takes to be an awesome pharmacist. You said something, then repeated it in a different way to make everyone understand. I too didnt understand at first where you were coming from either. Sorry!

I too grew up with Government assistance. In no way shape or form do I think I would be where I am today without it. I was adopted because my mom had me when I was 16 and I was placed and had a lot of other things as well, but nothing was ever handed to me like some people would like to believe for government programs. You still have to work hard to get somewhere and for me I wanted this career bad enough that I've overcome many different obsticals to get in to school. I thank the "big spending love to tax" liberals for where I am today cause I am sure that I would not have had as good a start to life as I have thanks to Government assistance.

Now going back to the original question Clachan3. I know its going to be tough for you to pay school cause chances are you probably cant hold a job. With that in mind, you need to check how many intern hours your school is going to give you towards graduation. Lets say they give you 1000 hours credit and your state requies 1500, you are going to have trouble getting that extra 500 hours. You may want to look into seeing if you can do a research study or just do something with a professor on the side when it comes time for rotations. If you do this as well, some drug companies, like Mylan and Wyeth, offer grants for research that you can apply for later on. I hope this helps!

A bit of a blanket statement there, dontcha think😉

Even though I myself hold a green card it stung a little bit.😀

Hmm have u thought about applying to the PhD program at the same time? If u do the pharmD/PhD program, most schools I think will pay for all of it. My friend did the MD/PhD program, and they pay for all of his education. And there is always army loans.

Thank you all for your suggestions 😍

Not true on the part where you say American students have so many opportunities.

I always frown on husbands paying for their wives educations.
