So these were my weakest courses this past year, so I decided to start reviewing before 2nd year starts...too bad I have forgotten almost everything and need to really learn this stuff again. 🙁
I am currently reading high yield Anatomy :scared: . How much of this stuff do I really need to know? Should I MEMORIZE The whole book cover to cover? I am not very good at memorizing. There are so many tables! Any tips or advice you could give me will be greatly appreciated. I am thinking about spending a week on anatomy now and a few days later before taking step I.

my first recommendation is not to study this summer. if you are going to review something, i'd make sure your physiology and biochem/mol. bio are strong. if you insist on studying gross anatomy/embryology, use HY gross anatomy and HY embryo. if you feel like it's too thin, then just read them over and over. knowing those books well is better than reading moore cover to cover once. you may find it useful to look at netter's diagrams while reading the corresponding section in HY gross. i'd also notate the page number of netter into the margin of HY gross so it'll be faster the next time you go through it many months from now.

i agree with nuclearrabbit. anatomy and embryo are low yield topic not only for 2nd year but also for USMLE step 1. my advice for you is to enjoy this summer as much as you can. go party, get tanked, live it up because this is the last free summer you have. next summer, you study for boards. the summer after...well there really isn't any summer break between M3 and M4 year.

Yeah-- they really are very low-yield. If you want to study Anatomy and Embryo, this is what I would do:

Take your High Yield books and, at the same time, flip to the Anatomy section in First Aid for the USMLE Step 1. Then, pretend the First Aid notes are your "lecture" notes and the High Yield is your "textbook," and use your "textbook" to clarify your understanding of the "notes." Take a pencil or pen and write in little clarifications along the margin of your "notes." (Don't write so much that you end up adding lots of extra material -- just write enough to clarify things so you understand them when you read it again.)

Spend no more than two weeks doing that. Then, re-read your "notes" once through, spending no more than 3-4 days in the re-reading.

Then, chill.

Just forget about it and enjoy your summer. Those 2 subjects are of very limited value for board. Neuroanatomy is the most important and highly tested anatomy, so next year before boards just focus on that portion of your review books most. But more than anything, relax and chill out right now. This is your last summer of freedom likely ever!!

This is sooooooo true. PACtoDOC always give great advice -- especially when I agree!

But seriously, enjoy your summer. If you've read through them once, GREAT! Now put them away and enjoy yourself.

😀

i would agree. there will be either very little, and if you have a lot, it is going to be so absurd and so detailed which won't be covered by high yield or other books. I would not waste time on that stuff.
