Anything new guys???

It's really calm here!!

how is tenessee 3anoon?

Tennessee
As usual...an easy going interview day with all the usual questions...no surprises...though i wanted to get more information about the curriculum but for some reason was not able to.

the program is looking for 3 fellows...they have total of 6 fellow...
they got a new division chief from KUMC...who was rpeviously at Duke..he is a big name in basic research..he is trying to bring more basic research faculty from here and there.

mostly a clinical program...there are chances from clinical research..
city was similar to detroit...may be little better...its cheap too...but dangerous too..

the program does not have any kind of interventional exposure....good transplant exposure..mainly you will be set for a private practice

we did not meet the PD since he was in Texas for an ACGME meeting!

you have residents with you when you are on acute service..so they make the job easier. average work load

no CRRT, no plasmaphersis

good clinical exposure. you rotate in 3 hospitals i think

good teaching, not satisfied with their didactic s.

Great program. PD is very nice. Main focus is research. But the clinical year is very busy.
Out patient exposure is average
Faculty is nice and approachable
Area is very nice.

Very nice area. whole IV was research. They really promote research. PD is nice. clinical exposure , teaching average.

Guys lets keep posted

the good:

Good brand name (reputed university)
PD and Division chief are extremely friendly and wants the best out of you
You can tailor the 2nd year to your needs....
Pittsburgh is a good city to live

the bad:

Extremely busy year 1 8 blocks of consults: fellows come in at 530-6 almost all days.

No much experience in interventional nephrology

Would agree to the review to much of an extent!

- Intervention nephrology experience is somewhat limited- but you would do the ACGME required quota of procedures- Lines, Bx etc.. Lines mostly done by the residents- if you need then you can do it... otherwise rotation with critical care can be arranged and you would be inundated with Lines!!

Another plus for the program- Likely transplant fellowship would be started next year- UPMC has formal inspection by AST in next couple of months!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interview day- laid back as most places. PD is very sincere and gentle person. Would let you know if he is interested in you in a subtle way.

Program is HUGE in terms of basic sciences research- NIH 20 million $ which is way ahead of even some of well known programs!! Chief is a powerhouse in terms of research.

Clinical research almost non existent!
Very busy clinical year. Night float likely to be started with new session - I remember 2 weeks (if not 4 weeks!).. Big hospital 1200 + beds- typical NYC hospital.. loads and loads of work..

recently started 2 years of clinical track also but they prefer training on research track...
Option to do masters in clinical research if you choose 3 years track!

I somewhat found them to be to the point and not into much of pomp and show like usual programs are!!

Downside would be NYC ( Which can be plus for many)- cost of living is sky high...

Overall rating- 7/10 ( less score because of NYC and that it lacks clinical research) -[ personally I'm not a fan of NYC or basic science research :D ]

Well the post fellowship scenario is not that great overall! But things should get better with improving global economy- atleast hope so!

Just wonder if those fellows were on J visa - waiver positions? or they could not get the jobs in non waiver areas?

Actually I have seen many Green card holders doing that too,

but they do it because they get paid more as hospitalist or because they could not find a nephro job at their desired city !

Very much possible to see this! Jobs [for new subspecialists] in cities have almost dried out- holds true for most of the subspecialties not alone for nephrology.

we have to compromise initially in our career one way or other- either with salary [to stay in big cities] or move to slightly smaller places or work as hospitalists!!

I agree with Nephro2012. I was talking to a cardiology fellow recently who had to move to a small city for the same reason, because the cardiologist groups in big cities does not pay as much and work far more hours. My philosophy is to do the specialty I most likely will enjoy the most, and I hope everything else falls in place with time. Goodluck everyone.

there is an opening for july 2011 at MUSC

I don't know but they sent an email with unexpecting opening. I believe it is a mass email for ppl who can start on july 2011.

:):)
Wow I was surprised to get another interview this late in the game!
New York, Beth Israel Medical Center

My interviews at Henry Ford Hospital was very relaxed and easy going. Fellowship candidates were required to present a 10min ppt presentation on Nephrology topics. I thought I was going to be booed offstage, but it went ok.
There was a previous post about HFH for which, on the most part, I agree.

Elmhurst Hospital (Queens, NY):
Relatively new program, started about 4yrs ago. Interview was relaxed. Associated with Mount Sinai University. Accepts 2 fellows per year. I had 5 interviewers and a fellow would take you on a tour. Their chronic dialysis training will be shifting to a private group: Atlanticare, which is inside the hospital. Teaching/priveledges do occur there. Some exposure to peritoneal Dialysis. Sends fellows to Ultrasound courses in Emory University and various nephro conferences around the country. PD very nice and warm.
Hospital is extremely busy, very ethnically diverse community. Speaking spanish/hindi/urdu/haitian is extremely favored. There is no cafeteria in the hospital, but lots of ethnic food places flanking the hospital: Mexican/Middle Eastern/Indian cuisines and of course American (McDonalds).

That's it so far!
I hope everyone the best and that we ALL match into the place WE Want!
:luck::xf::love:

Did you see the new US NEWS Hospital rankings?

How does that compare to your interview experience?

I dont know what to tell you man...the last interview I got was a month ago!

but i think its ok to expect few interviews till the end of April

I would call the programs that you are actually interested in and ask them for a phone interview..may be that would help!

I was just wondering if anyone were fortunate to pre-match. Can we hear from these individuals???

I just want to congratulate those who have and wish the ones much luck in the Match.
Take care:)

- Hopefully we all get what we want!!!

I would be very skeptical about places offering Pre Match!! especially for fellowship. I know prematches do happen.. but any decent place would go for Match to get the best!! Still would be interested in knowing about the places offering places outside match!

NRMP R3 is now open and though the final quota hasn't been declared looks that quite a few places may have had offered prematch ? last year?

I'm sure everyone worked hard and would make to places of their choice :)

G luck

Thanks StylinIsland for the wishes. Let the wait begin!!!! Good-luck everyone.

Hey guys,

anyone getting any letters from programs regarding the rank list? or is it too early?

I got one today. Just saying they would consider highly. I think they send it to everyone.

Are we waiting till end of May to submit the list

I actually got one from Allegheny General Hospital...and I know that my friend also got one from them which was the exact same letter.

Where did you get yours from ?

I think our deadline is May 15th or 18th...not sure which one

Program quota deadline is 18th May.. Our ROL deadline is June 1st week I recall 4th or somethingy..

Anyone heard anything from UAB?

Yeah I read it before and saw it this time!! Received the snail mail- general letter of high interest by UAB! I'm sure everyone who IVed there would get it and I presume it makes no difference to the ROL and stuff...

In lighter vein as everyone would be getting it lets see whose letter is dated earlier :p may be we can draw some conclusions from it LOL...
It gonna be a wait period now until June 16th! Any other programs active about contacting applicants??

Hey guys,
I haven't heard anything back from any programs. Anybody else here the case? Some of my colleagues applying for other specialties (ID) actually got phone calls from programs saying they would rank them highly. I haven't even gotten any emails back. :(

Nephrology is somewhat lethargic in that regard..though they are the first ones to cause the mayhem of IVing and stuff! Relax.. I'm sure the pool of applicants is NOT huge..

My PD (I mean every PD would have gotten so) received the mail from NRMP to alert the applicants regarding registering for NRMP some 2-3 weeks ago.. The pool has shrunk this year it seems.. people are probably less inclined in investing more years into fellowship to earn almost equal or lesser than Hospitalists..

Chill time of the year I must say :D

Hi guys, at the NKF meeting in Vegas we had a talk about the job market with DaVita representatives.
There is a contraction in the number of jobs and the starting salaries are well below those for a hospitalist but putting lot more hours every week.
The ASN just wrote a series of articles in their magazine that deals with the issue of the shrinking nephrology workforce and the lack of interest by American Grads ; they had access to ERAS numbers for 2011 , the number of applicants this year is barely above the number of positions available and even there was a drop in the number of IMGs applying; now renal is less competitive than ID and just above Geriatrics.
Many dialysis units and nephrology groups work just fine with PAs and NPs and that is having an adverse impact on jobs availability.
Almost anybody will match, so go, do your fellowship and enjoy nephrology but expect a tough job market with a better expectation for a job as a hospitalist or as PCP.

I agree to this notion/fact! It's true that the specialty had taken a big hit in past few years.. Even at ASN last year.. the same thing was discussed .... so if renumeration is not a consideration and if one is ready for long working hours, Nephrology won't be a bad option! Salary is definitely less than the hospitalist's salary!! sux but true.. not sure if it's less competitive than ID!! ID market has always been poor.. what they do anyone can do!! in comparison atleast dialysis is exclusive to Nephrologists!!

Hello all,

While other fellowship threads are more active..I see barely any activity here..
I know Nephrology is going downhill but still it shouldn't be the reason (if at all that is the reason) for being inert ..

<Even cribbing is encouraged :D>

To have the ball rolling-- lemme ask if anyone else heard from any program??

I got one mail today from Mt Sinai, NY..

Did anyone hear from Brown, Harvard combined, UPMC, Uni of Minnesota etc..

Looking forward to more activity here..
