I have a few questions. As a first year student, is it to early to be worrying about networking for residencies? How and when does "networking" begin. A number of students who are second or third years have told me that networking begins during your rotations. If so should I be looking at different rotation sites based on the residency I would like to get?

IMHO, it's never too early to be doing things to make yourself more attractive to selection committees. Make those grades and take advantage of any clinical exposures you can muster. Do make a pest of yourself; but most definitely make your zeal for learning and involvement VERY well known!
