Three more months until I will be an official D1. I'm getting excited and can't wait to begin my journey!!

I need help on something. My first quarter I will be taking Neuroscience and Biochemistry, and since I never took biochemistry on my undergrad, I was hoping I could study a little bit before school starts. Does any of you recommend any books out there to study from? I was thinking of buying the Kaplan Review book for step 1 boards and use that to study before school starts. Do you think that is a realistic goal (meaning would I be able to follow the book?), or does it just assume that you know a lot of things already (which will just go over my head and waste my time?).

I know some of you are thinking just chill and enjoy your summer cuz there will be a lot of studying when I start school, but I really want to do exceptionally well in dental school, and considering I've been out of school for almost 4 years, a step ahead wouldn't hurt. Thanks for your help!

Best biochemistry review book EVER:

Biochemistry
Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews
2nd Edition
Pamela Champe & Richard Harvey
ISBN: 0397510918

Also if you want to read ahead, I'd suggest you get your hands on a set of dental decks and read up some Dental Anatomy flashcards to familiarize yourself with dental termology and linqual.

This is all if you want to read ahead. Kaplan book would be fine since it summarizes everything in detail including dental anatomy.

Go for it.

Eight143 -

Honestly, dental biochemistry was one of the most bizarre courses i've ever taken. It had very little to with biochem - and was completely cenetered on memorizing every smidgn of the professor's notes. I've taken biochem before, and there was very little correlation, apart from some similar topics. However, I'm guessing it's a normal class at most schools (vs. a crazy memorization game) I recommend you get in touch with a D2 at your new school, and get their opinion on the matter. Or several opinions on the matter to see if there is something specific they could have used to prepare for the class. They may even be willing to email you a first quarter/semester syllabus from the class so you can look over the topics you'll be covering.
In the end (aka for boards) Yah-E's strategy will work best for learning the biochem you'll need to know. However, if you're looking to make your life easier NEXT year for sure, then track down someone from your school and ask for their assistance - I'm sure they'll be more than willing to help =)

Best of luck!
