So I've been rejoycing at the effort the University of Central Florida is making to start a new medical school. That's where I'm hoping to go to finish my undergrad after leaving the military. I searched for threads on this topic but can't find any. Does any know if they're starting a Do or MD school? WIth the need for more primary care physicians in FL, I would think they'd opt for a DO school. But I haven't heard either way. I really do hope they end up with a DO school. Any info? 🙂

What do you do out at Hell....oops, I mean Hill?

I'm sure UCF will be allo, as are every public univ except, what, 3? 4?

Hey I think this would be the place to ask.
I remeber seeing that a new school(DO) was to be opened in Washington..
Can someone give me the link to this one ?
Thanks!

If you go to www.ucf.edu and check under their news, there is some blurb in there about them awarding MDs. However, the med school first has to be approved by the Board of Regents, and then has to get approved for matching funds from the state.

Hell is right, man. I'm a weather forecaster. Good times, especially with the GSL giving us lots of Lake effect snow. Been to Hill before?

So does anyone know why a huge majority of public Univ Med schools pan out as MD schools? Do states not believe DO schools are any good? OUCOM is a public school. What are the other ones? It's too bad. Even though I'm really into the DO philosophy, in the end I may end up in a state MD school. Money and location are primary reasons. The wife is set on staying in FL no matter what. I guess there's also NSUCOM and LECOM-B.

some DO state schools:

1) Michigan
2) Texas
3) New Jersey
4) Oklahoma
5) Pikesville
6) Ohio

Pikeville isn't a state school. It's private. (I'm an OMSI at Pikeville)

Because MD is traditional.

Been to Hill a couple of times. I was not impressed. I'd rather have been assigned to Thule Greenland personally.

yes and no, it's only good if the school that opens is responsible enough to open a hospital as well and make a commitment to train their osteopathic graduates. If we were all to go into DO residency programs we wouldn't be able to (not enough spots for all of us).

it's important to realize and understand that the allo schools are being asked to increase class sizes 5-10% (if I remember correctly, don't quote me). This DOES NOT mean that they will necessarily increase residency positions. This may be a problem in the future for osteo grads attempting to get allo residency as the positions will be filled by the increasing number of MDs and DOs will be forced into the DO residency positions. This is one of the major reasons AOA is against a combined match.

So moral of the story, if you're gonna open another school (DO or MD) you gotta commit to GME as well (yes I know there's a lot that goes into this including federal funding).

Dam, seems like every year 1 or 2 DO schools are opening up somewhere. Do you think thats a good thing?

Good: because there is a shortage of primary care physicians

Bad: because new residencies are not opening up at the same rate

There would if we all went family practice. Those suckers never fill.

true those never fill but the AOA still does not have enough spots if every DO tried to get into a DO residency, from my understanding.
