Nova and NBHD Plan World-Class Hospital
Plans were unveiled today to build a world-class academic medical center on the Davie Campus of Nova Southeastern University (NSU).
The hospital -- described as “the next step” in a long-standing educational affiliation between NSU and the North Broward Hospital District (NBHD) -- received a stamp of approval today from the Board of Commissioners of the North Broward Hospital District.

The NBHD next will begin the process of seeking a state-required certificate of need.

The proposed state-of-the-art “medical village” would be located adjacent to NSU's Health Professions Division, and have up to 150 acute care beds that would be transferred from other NBHD facilities. The hospital would focus on education, research, innovation and providing culturally sensitive care that would be unsurpassed in Broward County.

“This is an exciting and unique opportunity for NSU and the hospital district to work collaboratively,” said Wil Trower, president and chief executive officer of the North Broward Hospital District. “We are honored that NSU invited the district to operate the Medical Village, and that this project will create new healthcare resources for the entire community. This is clearly an opportunity that could only exist at this time and in this place.”

The Medical Village at NSU will be a part of NSU's vision for an academical village. The upcoming expansion of NSU's campus, the district's affiliation with NSU and the large population growth projected over the next 10 years in the hospital's service area will create a one-of-a-kind opportunity to increase access to state-of-the-art, public healthcare services.

“Together, we are taking the next step forward in our quest to bring leading-edge health care practices and medical advances to all citizens of Broward County,” Trower said. “The new hospital will be integrated with multiple specialties based at Broward General Medical Center, futher increasing community access to district specialty services and programs.”

“NSU has a special mission as a leader in biomedical research and outreach to the community through our health centers,” said Dr. Fred Lippman, chancellor of the Health Professions Division of Nova Southeastern University. “This hospital and the collaboration with the North Broward Hospital District will create an unbeatable opportunity for everyone.”

The Medical Village at NSU would be located on NSU's Davie campus, adjacent to the university's Health Professions Division building. By 2013, the population in this region of Broward is expected to increase by more than 20 percent, twice the national average.

“This project will allow NSU to expand its internal medicine, emergency medicine and other health-related residencies and internships,” said Lippman. “Students will be able to seamlessly apply the latest medical protocols they are learning at NSU's classrooms at the hospital - without missing a beat.”

NSU is a dynamic, not-for-profit institution dedicated to providing high-quality educational programs of distinction from pre-school through the professional and doctoral levels, as well as service to the community.

The NBHD has provided service for more than 50 years to Broward County and is a community health system offering a full spectrum of health care services. The district encompasses more than 35 healthcare facilities including Broward General Medical Center, North Broward Medical Center, Imperial Point Medical Center, Coral Springs Medical Center and Chris Evert Children's Hospital at Broward General Medical Center. The district is a medical safety net for Broward County residents.
