For those who are interested, I highly recommend picking up a copy of today's JAMA (Sept 3). The issue is focused on medical education and has several articles addressing trends in specialty selection, educational programs, etc. Of particular interest is Table 1 on page 1174 that details different specialties' average incomes, average hours per week, and whether or not the lifestyle is considered "controllable" or "uncontrollable". Examples:

Internal Medicine..."uncontrollable lifestyle"...avg income=158,000...avg hours/week=57.0

Surgery..."uncontrollable lifestyle"...avg income=238,000...avg hours/week=60.0

Average for all specialties in this study: Average income=208,000...avg hours/week=53.9

Source: JAMA 2003; 290 (9):1174.

EM: "controllable" lifestyle...avg income=183,000...avg hours/week=46.0

What about family practice or peds?

FP: "uncontrollable" lifestyle...avg salary=132,000...avg hours/week=52.5

Peds: "uncontrollable" lifestyle...avg salary=138,000...avg hours/week=54.0

There is quite a bit more in this issue relating to # of positions offered in each specialty, distribution by gender/ethnicity, distribution of D.O.'s in each specialty, and longitudinal trends in specialty popularity.
