As far as I'm concerned, until something comes out from the Regents of UC, this is just planning.

Well, it's a start at least. I know they talk about expanding the undergrad biochem program by 2008 but where would that place the actual medical school? 8 years from now? 😕

And even then, would you really want to be in that very first med school graduating class and have to break new ground in getting a residency match?

Sure, why not? Since when does no reputation = bad reputation? It would be a UC regardless and would I'm sure be regarded in the same esteem as, at the very worst, UC Irvine. Bottom line is this state absolutely needs more medical schools to fill the demands of the state, period.

There is no way they are gonna open a new UC med school. Especially when they are considering closing both SD and Irvine, both huge money losers. There is simply no need for a new med school as well. If anything Calif has the worst oversupply of docs in the country.

See the Pew report that came out about 10 years recommending closing 10% of ALL US med schools to combat oversupply.

where did you see that ucsd and uci are big money losers? if that is the case, it could possibly factor into my decision on where to go...

Could you provide a link to that report? I'm only speculating...but do you think that they intend on closing some institutions (mainly public ones) because they are planning on increasing the entering class sizes?

oversupply? i thought there was a shortage of doctors...?? is it JUST california? because how would that many any sense; the filter for cali med schools is much thicker than other states (excluding ivy's and top 20's)

elaborate on what you mean, because frankly im confused.

California has a LOT of people wanting to become doctors, A lot of people wanting to train there for residency, and a LOT of people wanting to practice there. Its overserved overall, but I suspect it has less medical students per capita, due to the small number (relative to population) of medical schools.

That's the most ignorant thing that I've ever heard...how many medical schools have you seen close up? There's a lot more done in medical schools than just teaching medical students, including extensive research projects and treating alot of patients.

UCR already has close ties with local hospitals. The faculty for medical school already exist on campus for the UCR/UCLA biomed program.

I think the point of residency depending on individual rather than school has been brought up many times by other experts on this subject, so i'll keep quiet.

I think some people are just upset that they won't have a chance to apply to yet another california school due to timing...RELAX!!!!!!!!!!!

No reputation has always equaled bad reputation. Try and get a Platinum credit card at age 18, and you'll see what I mean.

I'm very interested in what you wrote because it is the opposite of what I've heard from reliable sources. Can you provide some proof or online reference for the claims you are making?

I have heard from a professor that there was some talk over 20 years ago about reducing class size because of "oversupply of doctors", but I don't have any book knowledge supporting that (nor do I know about recent developments). And I agree with everyone else, I can't imagine them shutting down a medical school especially since they've already put so much money into building the facilities. And btw, I'm sure every medical school is "losing money", they need to put so much $$$ for hiring professors/doctors/other personnel and to purchase supplies, so losing money won't be a reason to shut a school down.
