I was reading about the new appointees for Surgeon General (a trauma surgeon whose life has been like a movie) and NIH director. Check out his story at cnn.com article
The new head of the NIH, Dr. Elias Zerhouni is a radiologist who was executive vice dean at Johns Hopkins. From what I read, he's got his work cut out for him. There hasn't been a NIH director for 2 years and many of the division head positions are vacant.
