I admit it, I'm lazy! Instead of scrolling back to hunt for the original thread, I have created a new one.

I just got an email from Dr. Becker. 7K of free money oh yeah! :) I knew giving up Iowa was a good idea. All that good Karma of freeing up a slot for med school has paid off.

Congrats! Was it a scholarship or need based??? Did you guys fill out parent information? They told me I didn't have to, but I am thinking maybe I should have? I hope becker emails me and spreads the wealth!!! :) :)

My grant/scholarship is called, "merit/need" based. I'm not sure what it means to have received it only that MN is fast becoming cheaper and cheaper.

Good luck to any SDN people on the hold list. I heard they sent letters to everybody! My friend got rejected :( Oldman so are you definetly going to the U? Or is Duke still a possibility? Racergirl where are u? We miss U :) Barton has disappeared too! What are you guys doing over the summer? I got a Europe trip planned, so that should be a lot of fun.

•Watto,

Are you going to get in-state tuition?•••••Yep. My priority now is finding a place to live; I may have to break down and go there for a weekend to inspect apartments. I really want to live near the med school, in the downtown area. Might even go for a furnished apt. so I don't have to buy/transport anything.

Is it just me, or does the U of MN seem to have us in class more than other med schools?

Watto, they definetly have a lot of class time. It is basically 9:00 - 5:00 everyday. But there are a lot of lab times scheduled that probably aren't neccessary to go to. But I think it is good because you can learn in lecture or at home depending on your style. All lectures are on the internet and the note-coop basically takes care of all the lecture stuff so you could skip without panicking on missing minor details. From what I hear, lot of people skip anatomy lect, histo labs, pharm lect... there is a ton of skipping. They have a very traditional format and don't do much of the PBL stuff. A lot of people complain about the long lectures though, but it is probably best in the long run.

thanks•••••Hmm. Anyone have the answer to this? UofMNGuy? What I know is that after your interview, you either get accepted or put on "hold." Near the end of the season, they accept a few people right off the hold list to fill the class, reject a substantial number of "hold" people, and put the rest on an alternate list. I don't know wether the alternate list is ranked or not. I also don't know how many people get pulled off the alternate list. Maybe UofMNGuy can help more than I...?

The good news is that you didn't get a reject letter recently. You have only one more hurdle to cross!

I'm on that damn Duke waitlist. I know I should be happy, but the potential of going to Duke is making my future unsure. At this point 90% MN for me. If I get that Karleen scholarhips, I think I'll go for sure. They just gotta keep throwing money at me. :)

i don't know. i have a friend who got rejected off that hold list last year. best bet would be to ask dr. becker.

hmm.. jude.. well that is strange but good news. What they are doing is ranking the list. They will probably send u a letter in the mail by the end of the week telling you of your rank. Last year, I got waitlisted on May 18th. So if you didn't get rejected today congrats because you have a very good chance to get in. The list went to around 50 last year. If you are top 30 on the list, it is pretty much guaranted. Maybe oldman will go to Duke to help you out :) I think they rank 110. If you don't get in this year, you are almost guaranteed a spot for next. Good luck :) :) :)

anyway, i just want MN to keep throwing money at me. eventually i'll be given an offer i can't refuse :)

how many of you guys applied for the karleen scholarship? a full-ride would be sooo sweet.

oldman... curious.. what are your stats? You are taking all the money man!!! 70 people applied for the Karleen... I did, thanx you guys. I didn't open the mail till you guys said there was a scholarship!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Stupid me!

i had a 3.58 ugrad and 3.61 after i took my emt class (best 7 credit course i ever did :) ). it's higher now cause i took 1 u of MN class, but i didn't submit my transcript to MN.

i also got a 31 on my mcat.

Well, I turned my app late friday. The financial aid lady was organizing the apps, so I asked her... and she said about 70.

I also interviewed in September (with EDP people!). This was because there was an automatic interview offer w/ my secondary. Did you guys all get this too?

Yup! They have been doing that for the last couple of years. Most of the qualfied candidates in state get the interview with the secondary. My stats are similiar and two years of EMT... send money my way PLEASE!!!! :D

Yup! Two years, stopped doing it a couple years ago.

is the karleen scholarship for in-staters?

how does the non-resident "resident" tuition work...it seems like all the out of staters at MN actually get the in-state tuition...

how does the rest of financial aid for MN work? i heard from them earlier that they couldn't do anything for me until i get a legit acceptance

•••quote:•••Originally posted by UofMNguy:

As far as tuition goes, I think they give in-state tuition to most everyone. As an out-of-stater, it's a pretty darn good "scholarship!" Further, the word is that there just isn't that much free money floating around Minnesota. But with tuition going up every year (thanks, Jessi!) I think they're trying to spread what little money there is around a bit--I'm not expecting any more free money really--they already threw me a bone!

Iowa offered me a large scholarship to matriculate there, but I emailed my withdrawal late yesterday--a very hard decision! But now I'm committed--I'll be at the U of MN for sure next year.

I didn't get it :( Old man if you haven't heard maybe good news :) I think I found out last thursday that they selected somebody else that more closely matches what they were looking for. I think I have accepted I am getting no love here :)

WOW! Impressive   That probably means somebody else got it, but if they decide to go to school somewhere else than it is yours.

Jude did you ever find out if you were waitlisted???

Jude did you ever find out if you were waitlisted???•••••i just wonder if it is a "top tier" type of wait list or is it literally a "i'm next in line" type of thing. i guess i'll email b.j.

I just got a call from Dr. Becker asking me why I didn't apply for the Karleen Scholarship. I told her about my current personal situation, and she was very sympathetic. She said the school is so impressed with me that if I wanted the scholarship, it was mine!!!!

Oh wait, that only happened in my mind. Sometimes the line between fantasy and reality is so darn blurry!

i just sent off an email to bj to find out what "1st alternate" means. i hope it means i'm next in line!

cool, i got an email back from BJ. I am 2nd in line. there are 2 people who got it and if one of them decide to go elsewhere (pretty please!) i'll get it.

congrats oldman :) Is that a fullride for all 4 years or just covers first year? I hope you get it!

i have been out of contact for a while...on a huge roadtrip right now

i got waitlisted at minnesota about a week and a half ago...high number, maybe 98? so it looks doubtful for me to be in the twin cities this fall

I'm considering going to U of MN...I had a great interview and I'm incredibly impressed with the school (and the price!). Just wondering if anyone knew any details about the quality of clinical experience there (how many clerkships at HCMC, et al) and how well people match who want to do their residencies on the East Coast.

Goldie are you accepted?

As for clinicals, they are very good. The nice thing about the U is they have many affiliated hospitals like HCMC, Regions, Fairview so you can pick and choose which hospitals the best areas in each hospital. Of course, everybody tries to do this but overall you get a broad range of clinical experiences that reach a diverse population. You have a lot of flexibility to do some clinical blocks overseas which would be cool.
