Now, many of you will say "Hey, Penn State has had an EM residency for years!" and you would be right - they have had a joint residency with York Hospital (busiest ED in the state) but their relationship has changed somewhat and I have been told by the powers that be that Penn State will be starting their own EM residency starting next year. The ED's involved will be Hershey's and Harrisburg's. York EM residents will continue to do other rotations at Hershey (cards, MICU) but will no longer work in the ED.

Penn State is not acredited yet and is not participating in ERAS, you need to contact someone here for a paper app. (I don't know who the PD is going to be yet). Last, a lot of this is second hand but I have seen the app and they have been talking about it for years so I'm sure it's true. Any questions feel free to ask.

Text of an on-campus email I received today:

The Penn State Hershey Medical Center has been approved to begin a new Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program as of July 1, 2004.

The Penn State Hershey Emergency Medicine Residency Program received "Provisional Accreditation" - the "best you can get" from the national accrediting agency, the ACGME. The program received a three-year accreditation cycle.

The program is approved by the ACGME to fill up to 24 positions (8 per year), beginning with the first year of residents on July 1, 2004.

Good news for the newly approved program! Applications are now being accepted for this new training program - now.

Send print-outs of your ERAS info to:

They will be participating in the match this year, but missed the deadline to use ERAS, thus the hardcopies.
