Ok, I just wanted to share some "rankings" by funding from NIH for programs which I AM interested in.

Disclaimer:

1) As stated above, I only calculated info for programs I'm interested in. I grabbed this info from excel files from the NIH website and had to grab the info I needed. Don't panic if your fave program is not there - I excluded places like NYC because I just can't imagine living in a 6'x6' box x $30,000/month.

2) I'm not sure why Brown & UCSD data weren't included in this. Perhaps Brown's listed under RIH(?) in a separate database which I really didn't feel like going through. Duke isn't listed as a dept. because it's a division in IM.

3) I mistakenly took the data from '06 instead of '07. I didn't realize this till I had finished and didn't really feel like going through it again. If anyone wants to grab the '07 data (I can't imagine any huge differences unless a P50/T50-type grant was awarded), they are available here.

4) The numbers in front are the corresponding rankings from the List of 82 from Play274's post. If not evident, I'm interested primarily in non-NYC/Boston academic places with big research endeavors. I know there are many excellent clinical programs which I've excluded.

5) Just because funding isn't listed below doesn't mean a dept. is not receiving money. Places like American Heart, etc., can provide substantial funding amounts. Also, I know of folks in dual basic science/clinical depts. with the basic science dept listed as the primary dept.

Is this data for clinical or basic science research?

One thing about UCSD, is that there are more neuroscientist in the La Jolla "neuron valley" than any other place in the world. You have The Scripps Research Institute, Salk Institute and the Neursciences Insitute along with a fairly large neuroscience dept. at UCSD. Would be a great place to be if interested in neuro research.

This is for total NIH monies earmarked by department name. Thanks for pointing all the other institutions in the SD area - forgot about those.
