I have only applied to Suny Buffalo, LIU, and Albany College of Pharmacy. So far Albany has rejected me. I have a 94 on PCAT and GPA of 3.6. Did I apply to too little schools? Will I have a chance even if none has asked for an interview? I also have no pharm experience. 🙁

Do you or will you have a degree after this school year? Do you have any leadship/service activities? Have you done any shadowing?

Don't be discouraged. If this is something you really wanna do --- keep pursuing it until you get in.

I'm not too sure the requirements for these schools as I only applied to Texas schools... and I know all 3 TX schools are big on at least some experience. So I would encourage you to get some experience so you get a better feel of this profession.

So are these other schools --- Suny Buffalo and LIU still interviewing? If so, you def. still have a chance. If not, then I would encourage you to contact these schools and see the reason why you werent extended an interview, or an offer. This will help you better prepare for next year. A lot of schools like persistent people.. cuz that shows you really want to be in this field.

Good Luck.. hope things work out well for you.

I will have a BS in Biochemistry after this school year. I have no shadowing and no leadership/service activities.

I didn't apply there, but from reading other posts, it seems that it's pretty tough to get into Albany. So don't put yourself down for that one!

As to not having any shadowing or other activities, you really should work on that. Lots of people have decent grades; you need to do something to make yourself stand out. A great PCAT and GPA with no extracurriculars is probably not as competitive as someone with average stats that has worked on things outside the classroom.

Good luck and don't give up hope!

I don't know if this will make you feel any better but I don't have any leadership activities...well I did in the past but I'm not sure if they would care about that. Actually, I don't know how that would make you feel better, it doesn't make me feel good thats for sure! Anyways, you still have two schools you haven't heard from yet and I think there is a pretty good chance that you will get accepted to at least one. Good luck.

It's just like looking into a mirror .... I am currently applying to LIU and Buffalo, but decided not to bother with Albany (they told me unless I have A's in all my Bio and Chem classes, my chances are very slim). I am also getting a biochem degree in may, I've got a 95 PCAT and 3.5 GPA, and am still waiting to hear back from both schools. I am now regretting not applying to more (although I did apply to Wilkes, but all their seats were filled by their pre-pharm students). I do have year of retail pharmacy tech experience, which I hope gets me an interview at Buffalo. But, all we can do is wait and hope for the best ... if not this year, learn from our mistakes, strengthen our application, and apply to more places next year .... Good Luck!

My stats are very similar to yours as well. I have a 3.6 GPA with 3.5 in science, 96 PCAT. I will also be graduating with a BS in Biochem this year. I landed 6 interviews (UCSD, UCSF, USC, U Maryland, U of Pacific, Creighton) and went to 4. Out of the 4, I got accepted at 3 (USC, U Maryland, UCSF)and waitlisted at 1 (UCSD).

I think you have good stats-- most schools know you would have no trouble with their curriculum. I have pharmacy tech experience, research experience, and if it matters, I did extracurriculars like being a resident advisor (RA), peer tutor for physics, organic chem, and calc, and president of a club. I would think at most schools, your stats are good enough to get an interview, even if your EC's aren't strong. However, having EC's will definitely get you noticed above the other applicants. EC's are also good because it basically paid for my college education (RA, research, tutoring). I also think you should apply to more schools in the future-- I know the fees are hefty, but if it gets you in, it's a good investment!

BUT- don't give up yet- you might be hearing good news soon 🙂 I wish you all the best!

Good grades and test scores aren't really what get you into a school. They do get you an interview, but you have to standout during your interview because of personal experience, EC's, work experience, etc.

...but I hope you had someone read over your personal statement... 😳 I'm guessing English isn't your first language?

if I remember right, Albany is the school that only looks at GPA, nothing else whatsoever - they rank everyone by GPA and the top x number get in
so I wouldn't be too worried about getting rejected from there

Why would you say that? My English is not so bad. I did let people read my personal statement. After revision, people thought it was good. 🙁

I forgot to mention that I was a TA for General Chemistry for two semesters. I have also been doing independent research with my organic chemistry professor for 4 semesters including this term. I have also volunteered in a hospital for one summer. But nothing is pharmacy related.

Don't be sad! Your stats are pretty good and I'm sure you're gonna get in some where if not this year. Well, yeah, I heard that Albany only looks at GPA. I found out someone who got accepted there last yr with a GPA of 3.99 with 96% PCAT with a bachelor degree. So if you get rejected, don't feel bad. Besides, if a school doesn't interview students and just accepting them by the grades, then you should expect it's very competitive. I mean, who would bother to go to an interview if they don't have to?

My advice for you is to apply to maybe 6 schools. I assume that you ONLY wanna stay in NY? However, you should just apply to out of state schools just for a back up unless you're really confident that you'll get in some where out of the few schools you apply to. I know that the application fees are kind of expensive, but it's worth it. Spending a few more hundred bucks is better than having to wait another year. And if you actually think about it, if you get in 1 year earlier, you'll be able to get out 1 yr faster and earn around $100k. So if you compare a few hundred buck with $100k, it's worth it to invest right?

i wouldnt get too worried, i have a 3.0 with a 98 pcat, and i'm gettin ready to go to my 3rd interview, and got accepted to the other 2 places, still waiting to hear from 2 schools. only one school was in-state. and i also have no pharmacy experience whatsoever. so it can happen.

I'll be honest and tell you that your best bet is going to be Buffalo. I made the mistake of applying to only Albany and LIU last year. I ended up getting rejected from Albany right away (I didn't know better!) and was wait-listed at LIU until August when they finally told me they didn't have any openings. Both LIU and Albany are very difficult schools to get into as a transfer because they are both direct-entry schools. Plus, neither of them do interviews so you are basically judged based on numbers alone. If things don't work out I would recommend applying to more schools next year. Best of luck.

your stast is very good actually...It's weird that none of the school interviews you yet!! 😕
Definitely applies for more schools next time (if of course no good news this year), but hey, you're waiting for 2 more schools, so don't give up yet until you'll heard from ALL of schools...I wish my stas is as high as yrs, so you already have pretty stas there, that's something some of us REALLY want..Just hang on, and good luck to you.. :luck:

Hey ... I just got my invitation for an interview for Buffalo this morning, so you might be receiving yours soon ...

or not...

Caverject,
I really do hope I have as much free time as you do when I am in pharmacy school. One thing is for sure...I won't be spending it on a pre-pharmacy forum putting others down. 😛

Nimue,
I would not give up hope yet but I would try to get a pharm tech job or even a shadowing and maybe update your application to let the school know. I kept sending letters of recommendations through out my whole process to let them I know I was still interested....Good luck! :luck:

It's a slow night tonight....

And my point to saying that is penguins could inadvertently(sp?) raise the OP's hopes and be only to be let down again. It's a crappy feeling. It doesn't need to be rubbed in their face that they got an interview and you didn't.
