Im a second year undergrad at a community college, leaving after this year. I've been working in a pharmacy (not a technician, but an "assistant" as is the legal title in Washington State). Eventually, I will be a certified tech. Of course, I was thinking of pharmacy school all this time and so far have completed gen chem, currently taking ochem and bio. My grades, very good, some parts could be better. I work only two days a week so have all the time in the world to study.

I'm really thinking now, I dont think I would like being a pharmacist. I have considered medical school now. Anyone else experience something like this?

I havent.

Definately! I've been a pharmacy clerk for 3 years now and by working at a pharmacy I know there is NO WAY I would ever become one--pharmacist, that is. I'm not putting down the profession, but I would be pretty bored doing it. Of course, I've always wanted to be a doctor and just took the job to gain experience. It's good though that it's helping you determine what you do/don't want to be.

Hey.. i am pharmd graduated from pharmacy school in 2004. I am applying to medical school now !! Pharmacy can be a great career choice, decent hours, good pay.. but its not for everyone. There are other types of jobs that pharmacist can work... pharmaceutical industry, law, clinical pharmacy, etc.. so explore you choices!
In my case I have worked retail, hosp, and i have completed a year of clinical residency... at that point i decided that pharmacy is not for me and i wanted to pursue medicine! Good luck

Hey RxDoc,

So what aspects of pharmacy has left you unsatisfied that you now want to apply to medical school?

I'm also considering pharmacy or med school.

I'm in the same boat....graduated in 2002, practiced in all types of settings and I still am not crazy about it. The main problem I have with pharmacy is that our services don't seem to be valued by other medical professionals or society in general. If they were, we would be able to bill insurance companies for services other than dispensing pills. Another irksome characteristic of the profession is that the more highly trained board certified types (like myself) don't get paid any more than anyone else. Other than the satisfaction of doing something you are interested in, there is no incentive to pursue additional training. The money seems to be in less desirable positions like rural locations, night shifts, etc.

The last and most important gripe I have with pharmacy is that the patient contact is very narrow in scope and quality. I want to be able to help patients across the board with all of their health concerns, not just worrying about their refills, anticoag issues, antibiotic levels, or whatever.
