My bioethics professor (who is also a pediatrician) told us last semester that, to his knowledge, a doctor has never been sued successfully for withholding or withdrawing medical treatment (so, for example, removing a patient's ventilator; denying nutrition to a disabled baby). I've seen a couple posts around here where people assume that doctors tend to get in lots of trouble for withholding treatment.

Can anyone think of any counter-examples to my professor's claim? I am very curious about this.

Thanks!

Ask your professor what makes a lawsuit successful? Does settling out of court count, because those aren't released to the public. I know of no such instances, just raising questions.
