Hi everybody, just got my MCAT score and I'm wondering what kind of shot I have or if I should also apply to some DO schools. Are there any schools I'm leaving off that value nontraditional applicants more? Any help is appreciated.
Year in school: Graduated BS/MS in 2008
Country/state of residence: Illinois
Major: B.S. Nuclear Engineering and Math M.S. Medical Physics
Schools to which you are applying:
Science GPA: 3.37
MCAT Scores: 515 (129, 126, 129, 131)
Research: Nothing published, but have had a few posters and presentations from work as a medical physicist and research assistant. Contributed to research and development for a medical device company. As a clinical medical physicist I coordinate with research studies to submit data from patients treated according to a research protocol.
Volunteering (clinical) : 140 Hours with Reach Out and Read at the hospital where I work.
Physician shadowing: None, but work closely in the clinic with radiation oncologists for 3 years and have worked as an application trainer teaching treatment planning software for radiosurgery and radiotherapy to radiation oncologists and neurosurgeons for 3 years.
Non-clinical volunteering: 70 hours with a literacy group for under-served populations
Extracurricular activities: Dog foster for One Tail at a Time Dog Rescue
Employment history: Peer Mentor Tutor - 1 year Teaching Assistant - 1 year Research Assistant - 2 years Application Trainer for Medical Device Company - 3 years Clinical Medical Physicist - 3 years and am presently at this position
Immediate family members in medicine? No
Specialty of interest: Orthopedics
Graduate degrees: M.S. Medical Physics
Interest in rural health: Sure
What do you think am I sunk by my GPA? I realize that UCLA seems ridiculous but one of my letters of recommendation will come from someone I've worked with who is well respected there.
