I wish to make you aware of the existence of the National Society for Non-Traditional Pre-Medical & Medical Students <informally known as OldPreMeds>. We are a new, but rapidly growing, non-profit organization who focuses our efforts on gathering and exchanging information that will benefit non-traditional students getting into & succeeding in medical school. We have members who are attendings, residents, med students & pre-meds at all stages who are willing to share their advice, experience and wisdom merely for the asking. We make no differentiation b/t those who are interested in either the allopathic or osteopathic educational paradigms -- we feel the we are all part of the same profession -- the healing arts. OPM does exclude anyone from joining based upon their age -- we welcome mature pre-meds & med students who wish to come & interact with our community.

OldPreMeds has recently launched a new web site. It is still a work in progress, but is coming along very nicely. SDN has graciously consented to be our web host & you can find links to our home page in various spots on SDN. Currently, our web developer is building our resources & links sections to be added to the web site very soon. In these areas you will find various study guides and articles offering guidance for both med students & pre-meds.

Our 2nd National Convention & Workshop will be held in Dallas, TX this year. The weekend of 30 May through 2 June OldPreMeds will gather to hear presentations and a workshop by several notable speakers that will focus on strategies for the non-traditional applicant. Among our presenters are Dr. John Pelley (TX Tech med school BioChem professor, past Dean of Admissions, author of "Success Types" & pre-med guru) and Jane Anderson (Dir of Admissions for TCOM).

Information on how to join OldPreMeds & attend the 2002 Convention & Workshop in Dallas are both accessible from the web site home page. Membership in OPM is free.

Seriously, when you get depressed and wonder just why the hell you're doing this to yourself...go to OPM and read all the "success stories". Very supportive group of people.
 
Since you obviously like what we, OPM, has to offer -- do OPM a favor and endorse us on SDN. Try to recruit people whom you feel would either benefit from OPM or would prove to be an asset to OPM. And, even though we focus our efforts toward the benefit of non-trads, all ages are welcome, as long as they can conduct themselves maturely and professionally.

When or at what age is one considered a "non-trad." student?
 
"Non-trad" is really not age-specific. Generally, is you took a route other than the traditional hs -&gt; college -&gt; med school -- meaning married, with kids, time off to relax...you are a non-trad.

Now, if you wondering what our conditions for membership are...well, to be perfectly honest, even though we focus our efforts on the needs of non-trad, you can imagine that there is substantial overlap with traditional needs. So, we have quite a few tradtionally aged members as well. All we ask is that whoever joins abides by our rules & regs that you must agree to complete the registration process. Simply put, you are expected to conduct yourself in a mature, professioal manner.

I've only been registered at OPM for a week, but I have already benefitted from hanging around the site. Sometimes I need a little convincing that I am doing the right thing, and I sometimes feel advice for trad premeds is focused on "Make sure you are doing this for the right reasons and aren't making a mistake." On the other hand, as a nontrad, I need to be talked into it! I know medicine is right for me and it is not a mistake, but I get nervous and doubtful of my abilities. OPM helps me get my mindset back where it needs to be.

This is a longwinded way to say Thanks to Dave and please visit if you haven't!

Thanks! I am flattered, but OPM is far more than just me...it is a large group and we truly desire to help each other learn how to get into & succeed in medical school.

Again, thanks for your kind words! I hope to meet you in Dallas for the conference. If not, then maybe in Washington DC for next year's conference?

Hey Dave...been to the old OPM site, before it moved to SDN, and I was gratified to learn that I was not alone (sometimes feel that way when sitting in a sea of teenagers in PChem)! Question: do you have a preliminary schedule of events for the convention? Not sure I can make it until Friday, and I don't want to miss much! And thank you for all you do---truly a labor of love!
