Well, just 6 more days to go now. Anyone else freaking out?
xyxnervous.gif

They said that they will make all their final decisions on the 21st and mail the letters out soon thereafter, but one of the 1st years I spoke to said that they will send you an e-mail about housing the day you get accepted. Now I'm really worried that if I don't get an e-mail on the 21st, then I've been rejected. Has anyone else heard about receiving this housing e-mail as soon as you're accepted?

I don't think I can make it another 6 days.

DO NOT FREAK OUT ABOUT EMAILS.

for whatever reasons, emails by NU are a bit random and do not indicate your status. i've talked to some of by friends at the school and they said the same thing.

From my own experience, i got accepted in december; everyone else got an email hinting that they had been accepted. I didn't get this email and (of course) freaked out a bit; but in the end it didn't matter.

Just wait for the letter to arrive...and i don't think they reject anyone, so the worst you can get is accepted or waitlist...

(this is not to imply a zero correlation between email and acceptance, as many that got an email, did get in; but its not an end-all)

good luck to all, and hope to see you next year!

hmm... aren't like 1/2 accepted out of all that interview? that's what i thought.. 1/4 wait, 1/4 reject.. that's what the lady at the intv. said.

I thought I remember Dean Brown saying that about half of the interviewees are initially offered acceptances, about 5% are rejected, and the rest are put on the waitlist. Am I remembering this wrong?

Yeah, they told us out of 550 people interviewed, 20-30 are rejected, 250 are accepted and the rest are waitlisted.

does anyone know if "early" interviews are a good thing? better chance of getting in maybe? hmm...

Count me in on the countdown...and the neurotic checking of the emails -just in case I get a hint. I am super freaked out about hearing within the week. I'd really really like to be at NU.

those 30 rejects must feel real crappy then....hope i'm not one of them...had a horrible interview there.

Strangely, if you do a search from last year, quite a few applicants on SDN were rejected post interview. I don't know if that was coincidence, or if they reject more than they let on.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Getting rejected is bad enough, but knowing that you were selected as one of just 20-30 people among 500+ interviewees to be outright rejected would be especially bad. I'm getting nauseous right now just thinking about this.

I can't wait to hear back from Northwestern.

I think its an amazing school and the best hospital that I have seen.

I really really hope that I don't get a waitlist.

I HATE WAITLISTS.

Man I can' believe that the day is almost here. I suspect that we will all hear next week.

50 percent sounds good but not really. Because everyone that I interviewed with was a great candidate. It like you just have to be better than half but its not like undergrad.

Well good luck to you guys.

Hmmm, I don't recall any of the early-acceptees from December saying they were called.

that's what hallen told me- yeah, 1/2 is good, but my stats are right at the average, so we'll see how that works out- crazya your stats are OFF the charts! jeeeeze! have you already gotten in at nwu? what kinda extra currics did u do?

Regarding the "21st decision date": The email Dean Brown sent out says letters will be sent out on the 21st or shortly after; but in our interview day, the other Dean (not Brown) said we should call them if we hadn't heard of NWern's decision by the 24th. That's pretty fast mailing if they're really *starting* to send letters the friday before monday the 24th.

just to confirm . . .
the hallen chung e-mail means nothing with regard to status, correct?
i remember there was an old thread about this a while back, but i can't find it with "search" down, and i don't remember what the verdict was . . .

i got that e-mail last night, and at first was excited, but then i checked my status and it still said "application under consideration" so I guess there's been no decision made for me, and the e-mail may very well be meaningless.

cripes, i only interviewed there a week and a half ago, and yet i'm impatient! i truly admire all of you who interviewed early and have been waiting this long. 🙂

Banannie, that sounds like a good sign. I remember from december and having done a search from last year that though not everyone who got in got an email, all those who got an email got in.

I hate this waiting. In some ways I didn't want to know about the phone call or the email. It makes this week kind of awful. Like that sinking feeling you get when you have a feeling you're about to be stood up. C'mon NWU...show me some love.

wussup manic- question- why do you like nwu so much? what is it about their program that you admire? is it your first choice- do u have other options?

i liked it- but i want to hear from others for whom it is their first choice school

oh- and if they send out letters friday (meaning, if they actually go out friday) then they make decisions either wednesday(today) or thursday i would assume

moops,

NU was my favorite for several reasons. First, the school just felt right for some reason. The students seemed laidback and I liked the academic schedule (pass fail too!).

Second, I'd like to live in Chicago as I've been on the west coast all my life. Then it was just several other things...the debt cap...I'm actually considered an independent student there because of my age and work history, and the hospital was beautiful.

Finally, Northwestern was a total reach school for me. My stats are not up to par for the average student and I came from a no name college. I was shocked to get an interview there. And that's why I'm trying to think positively about getting in, but in the back of my mind I really worry that a great interview won't mean much once they truly look at my numbers. (they're fine...average for matriculating medstudents in general, just not stellar) I hope I'm wrong and that they look at my whole application, but as someone said before, there are a hell of a lot of great candidates. So I guess we'll know in a week whether or not a little non-trad with great ECs will head off to chicago. Here's hoping...

hmmm. banannie...now that i think about it, did you get the second email from hallen chung? the famous one with the "newly accepted students" quote? or was this the one from hallen that is actually a thank you for interviewing with dean brown? If it's the latter, most people get that one after interviewing. if not, the other one's the one to get excited about.

nope, it was the latter, the "thank you" not the "newly accepted students" one. i could only vaguely remember what happened back in december, with the various hallen chung e-mails flying around, so that's why i asked. thanks for clearing that up.

i was sooooo impressed with northwestern when i was there. but i have several good choices already, so it might be better if i don't have another to add to the mix. that is how i rationalize all of my rejections . . . 😉

well, you've saved me from having to leave work at lunchtime to find a kinko's and check my aol. You see, I have internet access at work, but we have these nasty firewalls that won't let you check your aol email or play on ebay or classmates.com. Strangely, the firewall will let many of my coworkers spend hours on 'hot or not'. Luckily I have SDN to pass the time.

And totally freak me out about getting a call from Northwestern. Awesome.

So does Northwestern call accepted students or not? It seems like the people who were accepted back in December didn't receive a call, but maybe it's different for the March acceptees? I just need to know whether or not I should duct tape my cordless phone to my hand this Friday.

Is anyone planning on calling the admissions office on Friday. I'm sure the last thing they need is dozens of anxious applicants flooding their phonelines that day, but I just can't handle the waiting anymore.

Okay- help me out here. This letter thing be blowin' my mind out the hizzay. I'm readin' this, I'm readin' that, I'm takin' off my hat. Mouse traps sometimes catch rats.

I got both letterz. The Thank you, and the "newly accepted student" bs... I interviewed on November 1st- I thought it went alright- my stats are all above theirs.. well, my GPA is at the average, my MCAT is a point or two above NWU's average. Research out the nizzay.

But- my question is this- do those letters mean something positive? Let me know, fo'; shore.

Cipher, if you call on friday, I will love you forever. I'm totally freaked out about not getting a call. If they have about 400 or so applicants to review (subtracting those that were accepted in December), I'd be willing to bet that many of the decisions have been made and they're just finishing up tomorrow. I know that the committees are divided into regional sections...west coast, midwest, etc.

Moops,
when did you get both emails? Long time ago? Because I haven't heard anyone getting the famous second one lately. I haven't checked my email in a few days though.

I love how I feel like I'm actually doing something when I speculate and let my mind basically go nuts trying to figure out what's happening halfway across the country. Very healthy. More caffeine should help. Right.

moops interviewed in november so mos tlikely got both emails a while ago?

i haven't heard of anyone who interviewed after the first review date getting the infamous second *hint hint* email. if anyone has...please post.

only one more day, and my status check still says "your application is under consideration"

so i'm guessing either:

a) they really are still working hard to make decisions
b) they just don't update the status web site very frequently
c) my application is one they "just didn't get around to" and, with no time left, they'll simply throw it in a pile for a nice friday afternoon game of eeny-meeny-miney-mo

Would someone post the link for the status check site? Search isn't working and I'm away from my home computer.

Thanks:clap:

Hey, one of my coworkers just read that the Mary Kate and Ashley Olson will be attending Northwestern (undergrad) in the fall. One more reason to choose NU.

Good lord, I remember when they were toddlers on that godawful show.

ughhh

did you know there's a web site that counts down the days until M.K. & A are legal?

skeevy.

You cannot call Northwestern to ask them about the decision made on your application. They will not give decisions over the phone.

Hope this helps. 🙂

Well, I guess we'll all just have to sit around and wait for them to contact us (sorry, maven!). I'm sitting here trying to figure out whether or not they would go to the trouble of calling all of the acceptees tomorrow. That would be a few hundred calls they'd have to make and I can't see the necessity of doing this. Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself that if I don't get a phone call tomorrow then I might still get an acceptance.

So if someone receives a phone call tomorrow, please let us know. Wait, that would just get me even more freaked out and depressed. Ok, so if you get a phone call from Northwestern, don't say anything so I can prolong my little dream a little longer. But I guess that wouldn't be very fair to the people who would like to know. Umm, so go ahead and post any info you have and I just won't check SDN in order to keep myself in the dark (yeah, right).

I don't know what the rest of you are doing for the next day or so, but I'm going to take my mind off of all of this by watching college hoops for the next 10 straight hours.

Where would I be without March Madness?

banannie- saw that website. gross. I can't imagine the madness that will ensue once they are coeds.

cipher- your feelings are like mirrors of mine. I'm going to be spending the next day getting out much pent up energy...running...running...maybe a hike or two...I wonder if I could get down to the public pool tomorrow.

As for receiving the phone call, the logical part of me thinks it would be mighty difficult for them to make over 200 calls tomorrow evening. I am also rationalizing to keep myself in the acceptance game. Dear god, what if the letters don't even arrive until this time next week? I'm already at that breaking point. Arrrrgh! I hope all of us get the phone call/larger envelope.

In summary....good luck everyone, keep us posted, and arrrrgh.

Anyone get a postcard with this text on it? I received one in the mail on the 7th of March. I have no idea what it signifies, but Northwestern is a member of the MCHC, and I can't think of anyone else who'd have occasion to run a background check on me.

As part of the employment process or as required by state law, your employer or potential employer has authorized the Verified program, a service of the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council, to conduct a criminal background investigation. MARY KATE and ASHLEY OLSON are gonna be at NU next year?!? wahooo!!!! i can't wait to tell all my friends. this is fantastic...looks like I'll have to take the shuttle to evanston though to try to snag an autograph or 2.

Wow, one guy got UCSF Neurosurgery. That's the residency I want!

I'm probably going to Northwestern, unless I come off the waitlist at Penn (very possible) or Duke (not so possible). Gotta go to second look first to be sure...

Well I guess today is the day.

Don't flip out too bad (like I will be doing! 🙂)

wow
it's absolutely amazing how many different cities and states people at Northwestern match into

especially compared to Mount Sinai's match list, which is like, NY, NY, NY, NY, Boston, NY, NY, NY, NY, Chicago, NY, NY, NY etc . . .

😉

HEY KIDS,

A DECISION HAS BEEN MADE ON MY STATUS PAGE.
Check your status. Anyone else???

HEY MA

NOPE, MINE STILL SAYS MY APP IS UNDER CONSIDERATION

yeah mine says a decision has been made.

Maybe they're going in alphabetical order. My last name is H. Maybe they're going by region. Maybe they're just doing rejections and waitlists first. Maybe I need to not dwell.

I'm having a heart attack, I swear. No phone call though. "I have no unheard messages". How many times will I be checking my messages from work? Many many many.

mine says "your app is still under consideration"

what about everyone else? anyone from IL have their status page change?

I am from out-of-state and mine still says it is under consideration.

i'm out of state and "a decision has been made"
also, my last name is at the beginning of the alphabet
also, i am a capricorn. 😉
