I have been checking my Northwestern status page at least once a day (and usually several times) since before I was complete on September 15. I grow weary. Obviously, it's a rejection at this point. Why can't they get it over with so I can stop checking? I even called in December and they said they were still thinking it over. I can see them sitting around their big fancy adcom table laughing about how they're keeping liverotcod hanging. :meanie: Grrr.

After visiting the school, I am still at odds with why people like it so much. Liverotcod, are you just interested in obtaining an interview, or do you really like Northwestern? If you like Northwestern, then you should send an e-mail to the dean expressing your interest. Personally, I still do not know why Northwestern is the place to be. I'm sure they'll respond favorably soon. You've got to think, why would they keep you on hold for this long if they're just going to reject you. Northwestern is pretty swift in its rejection. They must be seriously considering your application. Perhaps an e-mail could help nudge them in the right direction.

I want to interview there because it's the only really urban school I applied to, and I wanted to get a feel for how that might work. But really now I just want a decision one way or the other. I suppose I could email them...good suggestion. 🙂

hahah that's so funny liverotcod. i am in the same position as you! I have been complete since mid-October, yet everytime i call the lady says " you app is currently under review-- still! "
I guess I am just assuming that my app was initially placed in the not-good-enough-to-interview-yet- pile, and then they forgot about it. I called a few days ago, and the secretary said they interview until mid-Feb..so I'm thinking there is only one more round of invites to be sent. Best of luck to you, i hope you hear some good news soon! :luck:

Complete since mid-august...

Every time I call they say they haven't even gotten to my file yet...

No Hold, No rejection, just plain haven't read it yet.

I was thinking about calling and demanding my money back...we'll see how that goes...

I would take it as a positive sign. Northwestern rejected me so fast my head is
still spinning, so they must be seriously considering interviewing you. Irregardless, they should probably just buckle down, do their jobs, and get through the applicant pile in a timely manner.

Irregardless...

I thought my dad was the only person who used this word. I actually thought it was a nonword (double negative), but it is apparently a quasi-(mostly unaccepted)word. From www.m-w.com:

Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: "ir-i-'gärd-l&s
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
nonstandard : REGARDLESS
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

same here! it was like less than 2 wks; i think it had something to do with my missing my LOR deadline by like 2 frickin months! So far it's my only official rejection, but i can smell more brewing around the corner...

northwestern cuts off at 3.6/32
if you have above, they'll look at you and perhaps invite

if you're below, you have to have something really special going on

i know this because i know somone who works at the admissions office.

man im above that and got the reject; they must think i suck

So, if you happen to be one of those under 3.6/32 people, does that mean you are destined for waitlist/rejection when you finally go to committee for a post-interview decision? yikes.

i would doubt this; i think you just really have to show why you belong

Yeah, I guess you're right. I'll try my best to represent all the underdogs of the world! 🙂

What did you dislike about the school? I'll probably apply there come June, so I'm interested in your opinion.

It's very up and coming. It seems to have a chip on its shoulder - like it's trying to prove something. The medical school is actually small. There is a new building that is to house new principal investigators. It was a small building, which suggests space is going to be extremely limited in those labs. Actually this turned me off Cornell as well. There are like zero scholarships and grants. All the students seemed to be talking about loan this and loan that. I'm sure a majority of applicants will have to take loans, but there was little attempt by the admissions people to present other forms of financial assistance. I just got the sense that for the next five or so years, their resources will be diverted into moving up in rank on some list rather than supporting their students financially. I remember the number 91. That is the number of new principal investigators they are about to hire. There aren't any numbers to remember as far as financial aid goes. They advertized the buildings, the research but not so much the financial support of the students. With all you guys clamoring to get in there, I suppose they don't have to.

The interviewers were excellent, and the director of admissions was absolutely lovely (she kept it real and I really liked her). The admissions dean, Dean Delores is very beautiful, charming and composed - not your typical frumpy dean. My problem is with the school and not its personnel.

Addendum: This of course is just my opinion. Every one has different criteria for selecting med schools. Chicago is a lovely city, and the Magnificent Mile is well, magnificent. I do not mean to offend anyone who absolutely loves the school. I am sure as with all American medical schools, it is a good one.

Wait, are you saying that Cornell has crappy financial aid? I was under the impression that Cornell had excellent financial aid, one of the top privates as far as grants/scholarships go.
According to US News, average post-graduate debt:
Cornell: $85,856
Northwestern: $117,448

I don't know if these debt averages include those whose parents paid for school, and therefore leave with no debt, or only those with financial need. But from the looks of it, Cornell has very good financial aid.

Just for fun, a few more:
NYU: $84,000
Duke: $78,000
Tufts: $160,000
USC: $110,000
UPenn: $101,000
Harvard: $88,000
NYMC: $150,000

I go to Northwestern med and agree with most of what GuyLaroche said... he is pretty much on the money, except that the space/buildings are not small. Everything is compact because it is in one of the most hyper-urban spots in the country, if not the world. But you forget how tall the buildings are. That new "small" research building you spoke of has over 400,000 square footage and is 250 feet tall. The plot of land it is on is small, but that building would stick out like a sore thumb on a college campus. But in Chicago, alas, it APPEARS small because, heck, the Hancock building is a few blocks away and that sucker is 1250 feet tall! 🙂

But yeah, GuyLaroche summed it up pretty nice. Financial aid at this school is not competitive but the DEBT CAPPING is. However you need to show you need it--they don't just hand it out to anyone. If you don't need the debt capping, you can just get a low interest medical loan, but they are definetly not throwing money at students here save for research programs in which you can get a few thousand dollar stipend.

And the school is definetly "up-and-coming" like he said, and I agree with Guy that they seem to have a chip on their shoulder regarding being ranked 20th and are throwing a lot of money at the school to increase it's prestige and facilities. But who wouldn't love that? One man's junk is another man's treasure, I guess, and I for one am thrilled that the administration seems a "little pissed" that they are not ranked as high as they want to be and are throwing the bank at new principal investigators and spanking new facilities. It certainly beats a complacent and do-nothing administration. If any of you get in here and attend next year, basically almost EVERYTHING from the hospital, to the labs, to the clinical training facilities, to the lecture halls, etc., will all be pretty much brand spanking new and world class. There is a 1,000,000 square foot women's hospital under construction and another 1.5 million square foot one under planning, in addition to the amazing hospital they already have. And you can thank the "chip on the shoulders" for it. 😉

And as far as whatever attention you need from the administration, this school is incredible and really here for you, like he said. You can basically fail the first year and retake it at no cost, and you can take a leave of absence if you want to chill out for a year and come back without any strings attached, starting right where you left off. And the curriculum, at least the first two years of lecture based science, is not too intense and Pass/Fail, which other schools are doing, but we only have 2 hours of lecture per day, which allows us a lot of free time to pursue other things. You can actually have a life and a girlfriend here, for instance, so I think that really makes medical school a great experience since they aren't shoving it down your throat here until you hate it, know what I mean?

From their website, under info for August MCAT people:

"Please keep in mind that our application fee is not refundable. Thank you for your application to the Feinberg School of Medicine." That $70 is theirs now! :meanie:

I was complete in October and they haven't told me anything. I called and they said they are still reviewing it. My numbers are below 3.6/32, so they must have:

A. Seen something they liked! 🙂

B. Had a good laugh and decided to keep me hanging because they can :meanie:

C. Lost my application.

Don't tell me you fell for the whole "we are still reviewing it" gag...

you'll learn... 😉

I just got an interview invite from Northwestern today! From what I know, they send out two rounds of acceptance and the second one is at the end of this month after they finish interviewing.

I am a current Northwestern student. Give up and forget it. This is the game they play, and you don't want to keep playing it for the next four years. I was told by a faculty member after my check was cashed that I had no hope of getting in because they filled their NW spots with highschool program kids. It would have been nice of them to tell us this before selling us on a program for two years!

Be happy to go elsewhere! :luck:

Someone in another thread said the decision letters would be mailed Feb. 15th, but I also have heard Feb 24th.

EMT-CO32, what's your interview date? Certainly, they won't send out decisions before they finish interviewing. Good luck!

I believe they told us they begin to meet around the 15th. But I distinctly remember 24/25 Feb being the dates we would hear the decision one way or another.

I interviewed last week. The dates I heard were the followig:
2/15-the decision is mailed out
2/22 ish - if You haven't heard by this time, call the office.

My interview is on 2/8. I believe the last interview is on the twelfth, so sending out decisions on 2/15 sounds about right to me.

Does anyone know how much the interview counts at NU?

Also, do they review applicants and make decisions as they interview, or do they do all of it at the end? Just curious.

yes, this is a most important question. they 'may' have liked me right after the interview. once they see the heaps of superior candidates who interviewed after me, will they cast me by the wayside?

also, is it absolutely certain that calling on the 25th or so is ok if you haven't received a letter of disposition by then?

thanks muchly to those who provide answers to these enigmas.

Just be yourself and be HONEST. Don't try to be something that you are not and go into it with an open mind. It really isn't that bad at all and it is kind of nice to not have to answer every question. Good Luck

also, get friendly with your co-interviewees before hand. that will reduce the competition between you and them so that you don't get someone hogging up the spotlight. it will also ensure that you work well on the group exercise together.

good luck!
