I was looking at NW's website, and I felt it was missing something. It kinda felt empty.

I looked at Dean's pic, and he looks like a rich old tycoon instead of an academician.

http://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/dean/

Besides, the website had no information about research opportunities for M.D students.

The school doesn't seem to be involved in any community development projects even though it's in downtown. I know it's in the better part of downtown unlike U of C. The whole curriculum is outlined, and there seems to be little flexibility.

The school offers dual degrees like MD/MPH and MD/MBA. I would love to hav MPH just to be able to understand PH better. However, it seems that the school offers these degrees to help physicians interested in business and hospital administration. I am more interested in research than business. Maybe, NW's not for me. 🙁

UCLAman, u may be able to throw some light on this. Is anyone at NW involved in volunteering, tutoring, practicing medicine in developing countries...any means of self satisfaction?

I am seriously considering not filling out the NW secondary.

What do you all guys think? I am totally confused. 😕 😕

I would love to have a second opinion.

Yes, you are totally confused.

Interesting to note that the Dean's appearance has factored into your decision.

You hit it right on the button man... great feel for the school. For our 1st week of orientation we're gonna be doing cool stuff like cracking open money-filled pinatas, ripping off local grocery stores, and teaming up with 1st year law-students for the annual "Chase the Ambulance" Fun Run.

We're working on the website by the way. Java websites don't come on their own so we gotta launder a bit of money from that doctor stuff we have to do in order to pay for it.

yeah...their dean looks very "cordial"- royal, even...he looks like he's ready for a day out on the yacht with his boston terrier and his trophy wife- I'm envious.

Websites and viewbooks won't give you much of a feel for the mission, philosophy or atmosphere of a school. I applied to a school that seemed really wonderful on paper, and it was one of my top choices going into the interview, but after I visited there was no way I would have gone there. Then there were a couple of schools that I was kind of hesitant about, but when I visited they really impressed me. Try to keep an open mind at this point. Narrow down your list of schools based on things you can judge right now, then wait to evaluate the "soft" factors when you go to interview.

I am sorry but I don't quite understand what you are trying to say. Do you go to Northwestern?

Actually when I read about their curicculum, I started to like Northwestern more. The secondary isn't too bad now that I'm thinking about it. I'm down to the first question which I am totally having trouble with.

lol, just apply and see if you are selected for an interview. then go and judge for yourself. 👍

i smell troll but...

yes, yes, yes, and yes again.

just a few programs... http://www.infoplex.northwestern.edu/student/studorgs/

as far as research...u must not understand how the usnews medical rankings work or dont pay attention to them at all and if you cant find anything about research you must not know how to navigate the website either.

Thank you all for ur opinions.

I was looking at the wrong place for the info.

Information about extra-curricular activities is under
http://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/students/

I was looking under About the school column. That's why I was unable to find any information. And yes, I could care less about US News Rankings.

well, you asked about research...us news rankings are based on research dollars...we have quite a bit of research dollars...certainly not hopkins or harvard money but enough to get us ranked 21st or whatever.

the new lurie research center(i think there is a picture on one of the old northwestern threads) is slated to be open soon as well. there are also pictures on the website somewhere. as a medical student research opportunities are endless here.

good luck with the app

they get a ton of applicants but they don't give a secondary to everyone. so if you're at all interested in going there and got a secondary, go for it. its up to you.

Nah, I think NW is sending secondaries to everyone.

ok then, I fall corrected. i have no more ties to that school, they just ask for money every day.

This is going to sound really obnoxious, but I'm an undergrad at Northwestern and it always bugs me when people abbreviate it "NW." Northwestern's abbreviation is "NU" (Northwestern University). There, I've said it.

thanks for mentioning it...it was bugging the hell out of me too
