Overall I found Northwestern's Secondary pretty straightforward (i'm working on it at the moment). However the second essay question is quite interesting. I basically read it to say "please make us feel good and tell us how good our school/curriculum is." Seriously, it's all in their brochure, why do they waste our time asking us about THEIR curriculum. Seems like a waste of time.

I haven't received the secondary yet. Can you post what the questions are so that I can get a head start on them?

Thanks!

What did the question say exactly?

Three questions (I'll give you the general idea of each):

1) How did you come to the decision to become a doctor. 400 words.

2) Why go to Northwestern (I don't like this question!). 400 words.

3)Tell us about a signifant out-of-class experience. 300 words.

The second question reads exactly, "Why do you want to attend NWU? Be sure to respond to the following points 1) Describe what you have learned about our collaborative curriculum and how you can contribute to them 2) How our Organ-based approach suits your learning style, and how this can help you be a successful MD 3)Any other factors that made you decide on NWU.

Agree....I feel it was a silly question.

By the way, Does NW screen or do all applicants get sent a secondary??

70% get a secondary. 30% get a "haha, thanks for trying"

Well that makes me fell better....

Is there a list of schools that screen and those that don't?

They're just trying to get an idea of whether or not you will be a good fit for the school and also gauge your interest in the school.

Maybe my brain's not working but it seems as though the 2ndary is different this year. 😕

I'm pretty sure the secondary is the same as last year. As for the question about why you want to go there, it isn't silly. You'll see it on lots of secondaries and you'll be asked it at EVERY interview.

Remember, "you are not a unique and special snowflake."

I'm pretty sure it ISN'T the same question as last year. Perhaps there was a similar question but it wasn't worded that way. In any case...there are quite a few secondaries out there that pose similar questions. They want to know why you want to go there and how you would fit in with what they have to offer.

I'm also in the process of filling this out but I don't have a copy of their brochure in front of me, so anyone know where to find online information on what the heck an organ based approach is offered by their school? I've found PPS and PBL by searching their feinberg med school site, but no info on what they mean by the organ based approach to learning

Basically instead of studying subjects separately like physiology, pharmacology, cell/molecular biology, genetics, histology etc. You'll study the GI/Endocrine organ system and all the scientific disciplines will be integrated into the section, then you'll move on to say the Cardiovascular organ system and you'll learn CV physiology, CV anatomy,CV pharm, CV histo etc.

I hope that made sense, most people find it a better way to learn. I'll have to wait and see
