Hey so I just finished my 2nd year at SUNY Stony Brook and I just got my first C in college and gpa is not looking so good right now. I could also have done better in my science classes but didnt go too well either. Here is the break down of my first 2 years

First year: gen chem I: A
chem lab I: B
Calculus II: B
gen chem II: B+
chem lab II: B
Statistics: A-
Bio 203: B+

2nd year: Orgo I: B
Bio 201: A-
Bio lab I: B
Orgo II: B
Bio 202: B+
Bio lab II: B+
Human Biology: A

The C i got this semester was in a film genre class so it wasn't a pre req but that took a huge toll on my gpa. I was taking too many credits and couldn't manage my time efficiently. I don't know if I can retake that class but my overall gpa is now down to a 3.4 and my science gpa is also around the same. Where do I go from here? Should I take a gap year? I don't know I'm lost.

I just want to get into a US medical school and now I don't know if I stand a good chance of being admitted. 🙁

what's your GPA?
Also it's early in the game it's easy to recover. if this was in your later semesters it would be hard

As I said in another thread, I got mostly a's, sprinkled with a couple B's, along with one C as the cherry to top it all off. I still have a 3.75 GPA. Dont sweat it. Just dont screw up on your easy classes, and take the rest of your college years more seriously. You still have probably 1 or 2 more semesters to where you will see a significant jump/decline in your gpa from your grades. What I'm trying to say is that your GPA is still very volatile at this point. Anything can change. Just make it for the better.

did you look at the OPs grades? He is sitting at a 3.3ish at the moment. Maybe 3.5. That isnt completely out of the woods, but it is much easier to tank a GPA than it is to raise one,a nd this becomes more true as the total # of credits climbs.

OP, you are not screwed, but you will likely have some difficulty unless things change quite a bit. Adcoms do look for upward trends, so if you can maintain a 3.7ish for the rest of your college career then you will probably be fine.

Yea, now that I realize it, medical schools will only look at your last year you applied, so OP has 1 more year to bring up his GPA to where it will show on his application when they first look at it. Then again, a 3.3 can maybe be brought up to a 3.5-3.6 if OP gets all A's next year? I dont really feel like trying the math, but fall/spring + summer might be enough to bring it up. OP just keep trying! You are almost there!!

I was searching for posts about stony brook and stumbled upon this thread. just wanted to say to the OP, don't give up! also, those are good grades for stony brook. I know all of the courses you've taken and they are tough, weed out classes. the sciences at stony brook are known to be very difficult.

I don't think adcoms care... Maybe they do. I was really surprised a few weeks ago when LizzyM said adcoms look at honors kids favorably over non honors kids

You're still fine. Take easy classes to help bring up your GPA. Also, you can always compensate a little bit on the MCAT. Undergrad is like a long train ride. There will be times when the trip gets shakey and you get nauseated, but you need to stay in your seat and keep yourself occupied.

yeah, I don't know that they do care, I've heard very mixed things about that, but I do know what it takes to get a 3.4 BCPM at stony brook and it's not easy. I took some classes at SUNY farmingdale and honestly it was more work for me to get a B in a science class at stony than an A at farmingdale (not knocking suny farmingdale in any way here! just my experience). also I have similar science grades but manged to get a 34 MCAT..so I just hope the OP doesn't give up on med school because of this
