I have been rejected by all the schools i applied to. I applied to many private schools and my state school and was rejected by all of them. This is my last semester in college so I cant add any more classes now and if i register for the fall semester, my grades will not be available in time. My gpa is a 3.1,science 2.9, dat 19/19/18. I cant imagine waiting another year so I have to get in this coming cycle. What should I do now? I have alot of extracurriculars, communitry work and shadowing experience. I am sure my gpa is the biggest problem but I dont think I can fix that by this summer. Help please 🙁

😱 Wow, i'm surprised you didnt get in at least somewhere!...Those adcoms are messed up at times 😡

So you're a senior right now? The only thing i can think of is that you might want to wait for this May's cycle, and apply real early...

What schools did you apply to? NYU? BU?

I am also suprised you did not get in. Can you put down the schools you applied to? Thank you. Just to give you an idea, I applied to 17 schools, and I received 12 secondarys. From those secondarys, so far I have received 4 interviews. I applied rather late, Aug 30. I know if I would have applied earlier, I might have had a better chance and I possibly might have received more interviews. Did you atleast receive any interviews? Ya just jot down the schools you applied to because I am curious. But ya as you can see I am only 4/17 schools as far as interviews go. So if you only applied to like 5 schools or something, then that is a good way to screw yourself...

Did you interview at a lot of these schools, or did you get straight out rejected? If you got straight out rejected, your GPA may be too low for some and you may HAVE to take a few sceince classes to get that science GPA at a 3.0. Maybe you can just take one class first summer session or something.

If you interviewd, then work on interview skills or something cause that means you had the stats to get in, but you just need to make yourself SHINE!! Also, getting more experience would never hurt. Doing that and apllying again shows dedication and determination. It shows that dentistry is what you want, and I think some ADCOMS look better upon students that have applied more than once. I say this b/c I have talked to MANY dental students that did not get accepted their first time, eventhough on this site it seems EVERYONE gets in. Keep your head up!! 😉

i applied to BU,NYU,Temple,Meharry,Howard,VCU,Nova,Unc,columbia, utmemphis, ucla, arizona. I only got an interview to unc(state school) which i thought went great. Would it help that much to have one more science class? This sucks, thanks for the advice

its a bit surprising you didn't receive offers from BU and NYU, your stats are well within their averages.. when do you submit your application?

i was surprised too.. my application was complete on their side by october

You should have definitely been interviewed at BU/ NYU/Howard..you are definitely within their averages. Have you tried calling???

You should ask the schools why you were not accepted and then try to improve on those areas. If you are thinking about reapplying you should go back to undergrad fulltime for a year and take more science classes. Even though it won't affect your g.p.a., if you do well it will show the schools that you can handle dental school. I am a second year in dental school and I was rejected the first time and this is what I was told to do. It worked.

BU-we do not give information on the phone
NYU-we are swamped with applications
Howard-till i was rejected, i just got the customary under review response

did you take a year off after applying or did you reapply the next year? i dont want to lose another year.. i know it isnt alot in the long run.. but it feels like forever

Your problem may be your personal essay or letters of recommendations. Do you know if the people you asked had nothing but positive things to say about you? Or did you just ask someone you've taken a class to write one for you? Did you spend a lot of time writing that personal essay? Or is the content of the essay too typical...like...I've wanted to be a dentist since 3 years old...my mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandma, grandpa are all dentists....I worked/volunteered here, volunteered there...? Because that may be your problem.

You had an interview at UNC, which means they were considering your appliction. Definitely take more upper level science classes(BioChem👍). Keep moving forward and improving your application.

Skipping one application cycle isn't that bad. Use it to really improve your app. and it won't seem like a waste. Take the classes that will help you during the first year of dental school Like Biochem and histology if you have not taken them already. Go part time so that you can spend more time in a dental office either shadowing or working as a dental assistant.

I graduated with a degree in Political Science, then I went back to school and completed the science requirements for dental school. During the application process i continued to take science classes(part time) and eventually completed another degree in Biology. One year goes by fast so don't fret it.

Also if you reapply with the same appliaction and little improvement you may waste another year an $$ anyway.

im in the exact same position as you are but i havent heard from all those schools (check my stats below). my application was received mid-october, ill probably get my rejection letters in the mail on monday! F**k!!

if i were you, do not graduate this semester and take another year of science courses so it will help you raise your gpa.

at least you got an interview!

can you tell us more of your stats like, your major, recommendations, how long you shadowed, BCP gpa, etc...

I cant imagine why you would be rejected so early by all those schools

I thought meharry took lower scores.. i am surprised you were both rejected there. Maybe a higher dat score will balance off the gpa. Good luck and dont give up

thats not necessarily true. i know that UF gives an interview to ALL in state applicants regardless of their stats. had a friend who had a 15/15 dat and a 3.0 get an interview at UF. they interviewed him, and pretty much told him that he didnt have a shot, but that they interview all in state applicants as long as they meet their cut off. i'm guessing most state schools are like that. good luck

Hey- You might want to try and bring up your GPA before next cycle. I know there were lots of applicants this time around, and SOME schools have a 3.0 cut off (I know UF does for sure).

Just wanted to say HANG IN THERE!!!
I probably have the lowest gpa but I Have high DAT scores (took them twice) and my interviewers loved me. my cum gpa is 2.9 and science is around 2.7!!! 😱 but then my scores are in the 99th percentile so that showed them my potential and plus, i got to defend myself in my interview. tell them how much i've changed, better study skills, better focus, etc. in fact, they told me i was the best interviewee they ever had. so dont get down about your gpa....but definitely try to rock your DATs - something you can change immediately. your gpa may never be a 3.6 but you can damn well show them that you are capable of doing well!! GOOD LUCK

Pretty simple, apply this may, also apply to a few more schools like Pacific, USC, UNLV, Creighton,Louisville, Marquette, BU, Tufts, NYU, Case, Temple, etc. Study all summer , get a 22 on the DAT, seriously! Atleast a 21, and make sure that your RC and your Bio are really high. Then as soon as you score that DAT, call the admission directors at all of the schools and tell them to not throw away your application, some will staight out reject you unless you do that because as soon as they see that GPA they cut you off at like 3.1, seriously, until they see that hey maybe this guy could make it through dental school when they see your DAT, they will just toss it

Good luck, remember most of the DAT is just memorizing, its all how much time you are willing to put into it!!!

As far as your GPA, also remeber that it depends on WHERE you went to school. For example, I had a 3.4 undergrad GPA from Emory University and a post-bac GPA of a 4.0 (while working full-time) from a state school in my home state. My interviewer even told me that they look higher upon my 3.4 than the 4.0 since the difficulty of the schools were different. THEY KNOW THESE THINGS!!! So if your 2.9 is from a well reputable school, they do take that into your favor. GOOD LUCK :luck:
