Hey all, when I submitted my AMCAS back in June I listed a volunteer activity I was planning to do, from June - Aug 2015, and entered an estimate for the total hours. Shortly after that, I had to relocate to another city for work/financial reasons unexpectedly, and I wasn't able to even get started on the activity. I've been trying to get involved in a similar activity in my new city, but so far have had no luck. I realize this was my mistake, and I shouldn't have listed the activity, but I obviously can't change that now so I'm looking for a little advice on how to proceed.

I've been accepted at one of my top choices, but they did not accept updates of any kind pre interview or acceptance, so I was never able to let them know about my change in plans (I did for schools that accepted updates). I'm worried this may come up if/when they do verification of my activities. My question is, should I contact the admissions office now, directly, and ask if this puts my acceptance in jeopardy? The other option is to not say anything, and hope they don't care if/when they verify it because I mentioned it as a 'planned' activity. I'm leaning towards the former, because if they rescind my acceptance now, I still have a shot at other schools where I've been accepted who might take a different stance, whereas if they find this out on their own, later, it may have been past the point where I've dropped others and I'm left with nothing. Any advice? Am I worrying too much?

I should note, the activity wasn't necessarily unique or special, and wasn't indicated as most meaningful, but it would have been a large chunk #'s wise in my overall application.

I think you're worrying too much. Usually, the only example of a "planned" activity that schools tend to care about is that you complete whatever degree you were in the process of completing. I doubt that schools have the time to verify all of your hours, and to care so much that they restart the decision making process on you. At the time you filled out your primary, it was truthful. If a school doesn't allow you to send updates, then it's not your fault.

If you really want to ease your mind, I would look over the conditions of acceptance that you probably received and look over it in order to figure out if there's a basis for rescinding your acceptance. Usually, those conditions are simply that you complete all future coursework with good grades, complete whatever degree you're pursuing, notify the office of any legal or criminal proceedings, and actually accept their offer of admissions.

If medical schools based their admissions off of what you promise to do in the future my application would have been a lock at any and every school.

In other news...still working on that whole cancer thing...

Thanks guys, that makes me feel a bit better about the situation. @aprimenumber, I did review my acceptance letter, and they mention those things you listed but also that they're not limited to those reasons for rescinding an acceptance.

Any other thoughts?

Leaning towards not bringing any more attention to the issue based on the responses above. Anyone else have advice?

@Goro, @gyngyn, @LizzyM, any input on how you all might view this on your end would be very much appreciated!

I've never made an admission decision based on what someone said they planned to do in the future. If I really cared, I would ask about it at interview. the school didn't ask and you didn't tell so in all likelihood, your offer did not hinge on that planned activity.

It won't be an issue; life happens.
