I think I am going to face the decision of deciding whether I should attend Nova or Temple, which one do you think is best? I really like schools equally and I will probably have to wait awhile for Temple since I am sure I will be put on the ALT list but I am confident that I will get in after all the drops/no shows. Nova is a great location and great facilities. Temple also has great facilities. The atmosphere at both schools was positive. I think I might just flip a coin! I have heard alot of negative things about Nova, but when I interviewed NO one complained about any of those things being a problem. I know dental school is what you make of it, but I really cannot decide. Also, I would like to eventually practice in AZ or somewhere else in the southwest, I do not think that makes a diff.

Thanks Again

Everyone's probably like..."I knew he would reply to this thread!!" Well, since no one took the liberty to reply to this thread and this was my exact situation (stick with Temple or go to Nova), I feel the URGE (like those Herbal Essense commercials) to respond and share with my friend, Vikas!

Vikas,

Obviously you know where I'll be next year, but I think that you and I have talked positively about Temple over the phone between our phone calls many times. I want to share that, Temple has made my "dental school decision" fairly easy by placing my on the alternate list. I didn't want to risk waiting around until the end of July or even possibly into August 2002 to find out if I'm denied or accepted by Temple when I'm already accepted by another awesome school . If both Temple and Nova would've accepted me at the same time earlier this month, my decision would have been split like yours and a bit more difficult to make!

I guess the bottom line is if you feel like waiting around to find out if you're in Temple or not, then drop that $1000 to Nova (if you get accepted, which I know you will) to secure a seat as a back up plan, if Temple is your FIRST CHOICE! While with Nova, you will know NOW that you're in and you'll get an education just as good (again, more you put in, the more you'll get out of your education), if Nova is your FIRST CHOICE.

Here's my breakdown:

1) Facilities and Studying Environment: Nova WINS

2) Clinical Exposure and Diverse Patient Pool: Temple WINS

3) Patient Dental IQ: (the amount of dental awareness and oral hygiene from your patients) - Nova WINS

4) Basic Science Courses: (which will lead to better prepping for the NBDEs) - Nova WINS (because at Nova we'll be taking a lot of these courses with a medical school) -- [remember when Mark Lombard was going over the "five" aspects of Temple that can insure you "MASTERY" -- basic science instruction was not one of them!]

5) Tuition (all costs for non-residents living off campus FIRST YEAR): Temple = $49,851; Nova = $52,693 - Temple WINS

6) Social Activities: Nova WINS (Temple dental is kind of secluded by itself while at Nova, we get to interact with DOs, PAs, ODs, Phar. Ds, PTs, OTs, and Master students)

7) Location: Philly vs Fort Lauderdale (depends what you like about where you live; subway system vs beaches; historic settings vs superfacial people; cheese steaks vs Enchiladas;) for me - Ft. Lauderdale (Nova) WINS

As you can see my friend, to me, Temple WILL prep and train the hell out of me to be a competent dental practitioner, I feel and sense that! But I strongly feel that Nova will do that just as well if I seek to do more procedures once I'm completed with my assigned patients. Addition to all that, I believe Nova will provide the "fun" that I so much need during my four years of dental education!

All this is my personal preference and opinion. Good luck on deciding, where ever you end up going, you will be successful!

Oh, one more factor:

8) Classmates: Nova WINS (because I'll be there! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> )

Yah-E @ Nova--

I have decided to attend Nova with you, pending admission : ) I have alot of family in Ft Lauderdale and I think it is the best overall deal for me. It feels good to be finally committed now I just hope I do not get waitlisted. I am thinking about possibly getting a house or condo in Ft Lauderdale and will be probably looking for roomates if anyone is interested, feel free to PM me. Once I get accepted I can start making some real plans : )

Thanks again for all the support!

VIKAS!!!

ALRIGHT BRO!!! Congrats on deciding Nova! ARE YOU SURE NOW? What if Temple accepts you? It's a big step you're taking. I'm glad that you will be my classmate, we can help each other and 98 others succeed and have fun during it!

i say go to temple!!!
i think temple's a great school....
but u should definately pay the deposit for whichever school u get into first to ensure a spot...
but do what you think will make you happiest!

Nova is the way to go---101%.

I agree with stargirl and stomatologist...go to temple....

Yah-e...
"4) Basic Science Courses: (which will lead to better prepping for the NBDEs) - Nova WINS (because at Nova we'll be taking a lot of these courses with a medical school) -- [remember when Mark Lombard was going over the "five" aspects of Temple that can insure you "MASTERY" -- basic science instruction was not one of them!]"

does the "mastery" of dentistry and being good at the basic sciences have to necessarilly be mutually exclusive?....I think that being a "master" of the basic sciences will help in being a good clinician as well....and temple does get some science classes taught by med school profs...just w/o the cutthroatness of combining meds and dents...

BDG,

Three things:

1) Temple's admissions director, Mark Lombard, even confessed himself that Temple will prep their students in Basic Science, but will not provide them "MASTERY" as in other areas such as their clinical exposure.

2) True, that basic science courses are taught by medical school professors a Temple, but the two curriculi/syllabi (medical and dental) are probably slightly different (with more info required to know for medical school students).

3) Just because meds and dents have the same basic science courses at Nova, that does not mean it's a recipe for "cutthroatness". Could it happen? Of course! But I sense that it will be more help and friendships than cut throat and enemies! I posted a thread in the Pre-Osteopathic forum to see how DO students feel about having classes with us, every single one of them are excited to have classes with us!

But it's good to see that you guys are more pro-Temple than Nova! Temple is a great school, but Nova is obviously the one for me and others that have decided to attend, including DMD DOC! Thanks for the input and questions.

Go Temple!!

So far I paid for my second deposit for Temple. I will have my USC interview tomorrow!(april 2) Hopefully that will go well. Still don't know where to go yet, so hard to decide. Temple is a great school, but USC is in California. I will wait for maybe 3 more weeks, then I will decide. But as for you who decide to go to Temple, it is a great choice!

92% matching rate last year at Temple for post-grad positions....Not sure what NOVA can do, but if they can even beat 85%, then I made the wrong choice (National Avg. 60%)....They must do well enough at Temple on their NBDEs to obtain this 92% match rate. Dental School is what you make of it, best of luck to all. Temple and North Philly...Gotta Love it

My class had 100% match rate, everyone who applied through match to a specialty got accepted. It doesn't mean a thing. We scored at the national average for part 2 and below for part 1. Last years, sophmores had 19 people in the 90's and killed the national average and the curriculum hasn't changed.

Big Poppa--

Which school do/did you go to?
