Why so much bashing on NW?? I interviewed both at U. of Chicago and NW and found both programs to be strong. The main difference between the two is pt population. NW gets many rich clients, but they don't make up 100% of the pt population at the hospital!! I think they both stress research and academics. I consider both programs to be equally strong and just as good as any other top 25 programs. Any comments?

U of C is probably more appropriate if you desire to be a pure academist.

I don't have first hand knowledge of either program but the rumor about Northwestern is that residents there have no autonomy and thus is not a great place for clinical training.

That rumor is largely based on NW's previous system of having private docs. Now that this is no longer he case (as of earlier this year, all attendings are of the traditional ward-based type), this rumor is unlikely to be true. Anyway, I matched at NW, and was not impressed by a lack of autonomy. The reisdents I spoke to seemed very content with the degree of their autonomy. I think as is true in MOST places, the autonomy is there for those who want it and can hadle it. Just my 2 cents.

I interviewed at Northwestern and ended up ranking it #11/12 on my list. I hated the place, everything about it. Good place to train for academics/research, not good for clinical training. I will say though, that I know quite a few people who interviewed there and 1 who matched this year - most people seem to have pretty polar views about the place, either they love it or hate it. I hated it, but I can't say that it's a horrible place, just that it was not the place for me.

Where did you match Behcet? Just curious.
