Looks like you are the only one accepted to NYCOM this year. The faculty to student ratio will be awesome! :D I hope my 3 1/2 years of irrational exuberance and youthful indiscretions will not directly impact your future quality of life at NYCOM.
Good luck. ;)

Hey Gidget,
I'm not sure where I'll be living yet. Do you know where you'll be. I will begin looking soon. I'm hoping to find an apartment that will let me bring the love of my life... my rottie, Heartley. If you know of anywhere please let me know. It's been pretty hard to get fellow NYCOMers to post so if you'd like to chat fell free to e-mail me.

hey there...

I'm a first year NYCOM student and as far as living arrangements go, about a third of the students live in Glen Cove and the rest are scattered around the island and city. Dont live too far geographically as traffic can be tough at certain times on the major highways. The school will give you access to the NYCOM bulletin board sometime in the early summer. Call and ask if you dont hear earlier. Most 1st years tend to "meet" there and house-hunt. Apartments are hard to find in the area, as it's not a college town. Most students team up and rent out a house or the like. Be prepared to shell out anywhere b/t $500-$800 each per month plus utils. This unfortunately is the north shore of LI and the richest county in the country.

Lemme know if I can answer anymore of your Q's.

Good luck and enjoy yourself b/t now and August. Life definitely changes once you put that white coat on!

Hi --I will be attending NYCOM in August. I just found out I was accepted in the middle of December and just recently discovered SDN. I will be living at home, I'm only 20 minutes away. Looking forward to meeting you and other fellow classmates

im a student at ny tech, my friend who lso goes to tech with me owns a house in glen cove where 3 other fellow pre-med bsdo kids live, he has a basement apartment for rent. i believe in the 600-700 range. it takes only 10 minutes from his house to the nycom.

I recommend living near NYCOM even though the rents are high. I lived in Northern NJ and commuted to Long Island. It is a difficult commute! Just my 2 cents for what it's worth........

Hi... can anybody tell me how long it usually takes from NYCOM to New York City? Is it possible to live in NYC and study at NYCOM? Thank You!

It is probably around 30 miles from NYC to NYCOM but it will probably take 45 minutes to 1 hour with traffic.

it's not that bad if you are used to living 45 miles from school. NYCOM's website was a little unclear as far as clinical affiliations, does anyone know a few hospital affiliations of NYCOM??
Thank You!! :)

I lived in Glen Cove my first year but then I moved back home to Brooklyn and saved a lot of money in the process. Make sure you allow enough time for traffic (ESPECIALLY on exam mornings - the administration won't care if you were stuck in a traffic jam for 2 1/2 hours, they won't let you re-take a test if you're late). Generally speaking it would take me about 1 hour door-to-door, allowing for 15 minutes of traffic. If I was coming home late at night or at an odd time I could make it to Brooklyn in about 35 minutes (driving at a mildly illegal rate of speed, of course!)

I also found that my ride to and from school was good down-time, I used to listen to music during the ride home whereas I would feel guilty turning
on my stereo when I was home and should have been studying.

Hope this helps.

thank you Stacey, it helped a lot! Just another question for you, is traffic very bad both ways or is it worse coming out of NYC? (my husband got a job in NYC and we are deciding where it will be fair for both of us to live).

Glad to help!

If you live in NYC you are going against the flow of traffic so traffic is usually lighter. However, I remember times when I was stuck in a jam watching the so-called "rush hour" traffic fly past me going in the opposite direction.

Basically, it's a crapshoot!! :)

HI, I will be going NYCOM this August. I am looking for a roomate that likes cats. I have two cats with short hair who are declawed. I am willing to live up to 30 min from campus, but no further. I am going to check out Glen cove, Minneola, Sea cliff, Bayville and areas of Queens. If any one is interested in possibly rooming with me, e-mail me at [email protected]
Yeah, I know feline is spelled wrong, the correct spelling was taken.

I'm so happy that NYCOM students are finally surfacing. Congrats to all of you and I can't wait to meet you all. I have gotten a few e-mails about roomates and I just want to throw out there that I have a dog, a sweet, but BIG dog that I've been living alone with for 7 years. I need a roomate who will not mind living with my sweetheart Heartley. Any takers? She is a 7 year old Rottie, very sweet and lovable. I'm so worried that I will have to leave her behind, :( so if anyone is interested please let me know. Thanks and congrats again!!!

Hi it's me again,

Is your Rottie around cats at all? My two cats have been raised with German Shepards and labs. They are fine with dogs. Maybe it could work out? I'v had large dogs my whole life. Just an idea. Elaina

Hey Elaina,
I don't know if she'll be ok with cats. Its been just her and I for her whole life (we did have aniother dog with us for a while and they got along great). She really is a sweetie but it would be something we'd have to test out first. I'm up for it though. Let me know. I'm still waiting to get the password from NYCOM for the housing website because I'm having difficulty finding decent apartments on general web searches. Are you having the same problem? Where are you living now? If your close we could get the animal friends together to see how it goes.

Hey Thanks Smiley :) I am very happy and excited though I am a bit bothered that we have to figure out the housing part but I guess we'll all manage. I'm gonna have to get a car and re-learn how to drive. Coming originally from NYC, I never really had the need for a car. IT's gonna be weird having to drive everywhere. Anyway, What is everyone doing this summer? HAve you guys explored the NYCOM area yet? What's around there?

First year classes at nycom include, anatomy (and embryology), biochem, histology, physio, genetics, microbio, pathology, family practice, neuroscience, neurology, and OMM. Classes start in mid august and end in early-mid june.

A car is definitely needed. There's not too much to do up here compared to the city, but you're never bored. There's a few malls, bars, movie theaters, the beach, etc. Regarding housing...The school will give you access to the NYCOM webboard sometime this spring or early summer. This is where most first years meet to find housing. Popular towns to live in include Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Hicksville, Roslyn, and Mineola. Some commute from Queens and the south shore, but they spend a decent amount of time in traffic. Rent's expensive, as expected.

Hope this helps...

Hey guys! I will be attending NYCOM this August. I live in Brooklyn and will probably drive. For those who lived in Brooklyn and commuted to NYCOM how was it? Hopefully I will find a carpool partner to save on gas and all those miles? Is anyone going to commute from the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights area to NYCOM?

Hey Smiley. I was reading something on SDN and I saw a posting where you listed your stats. Mine were really similar in terms of scores and I also have tons of great extracurricular. I think it's really what saved my butt. NYCOM did not even ask me anything about my grades. I was pretty amazed. When do we get access to the housing lists? Are you familiar with the NYCOM area at all?

So............ Is anyone else gonna meet up????

Where is everyone????

As I mentioned before, I wanted to meet on Saturday b'c I was coming from Providence the day before. Is that OK?
