My feeling is that they were first come and maybe based on need. I only got a 500 grant for the whole year.

Well I will post a confirmed answer tomorrow morning after talking with Financial Aid office.

My Question stays:

Which Loan is best to go for?
Grad Plus or Private loan
Who is the best lender? Best rate?

Don't quote me on this, someone else may be able to better answer, but I'm not sure that you can consolidate private loans in the same way you can the Grad Plus and other loans. So in that respect, I'd say the Grad Plus is better!

As for who's the best lender, and who has the best rate, you need to apply to them, and see what rates and offers they give you, and make a decision from there!

Hope this helps!

hi is anyone using the NYCOM health insurance? I was wondering what the cost was cuz i'm not sure i'll be covered under my parents next year. Does anyone know if it would be cheaper/better to get insurance else where?

If you are not covered under your parents insurance you are REQUIRED to purchase NYCOM's insurance.

If you are not covered under your parents insurance you are REQUIRED to purchase NYCOM's insurance.

that is, unless you're coming off a job and have COBRA and want to keep it for a bit or are coming out of a situation in which you get to keep your health plan from your old place of work.

or.. if you have free medicaid plan.

I am purchasing NYCOM insurance since I dont have any other options :(

I don't think they're accepting COBRA. I have COBRA now, and they told me I wouldn't get to keep it. I am getting back under my parents insurance, but I thought maybe I could hand in the waiver now because I ave Cobra, and I think it was Dominic who told me that they weren't acceptng cobra as a possibility for insurance, he said they used to, but not anymore.

did anyone receive scholarship from nycom?

I canceled my insurance because I was covered under my parents plan. NYCOM Medical is 1998.38 per a semester meaning twice as much for the whole year. Dental is ~300, 296 and some change for the year.

Does anyone know about the BP cuff we're supposed to get? Do we need the one that has the pump nad the guage, or do we just need a cuff that we can attach to a machine on the wall? So something like this: http://www.allheart.com/ahdbp0100.html

versus something like this: http://www.allheart.com/pm282.html where there's guage or pump

My feeling would be the first one. Though I don't know for sure. On the web board there is an announcement that there will be a medical supply company selling equipment at the school in early Sept.

Hi All,
I got a letter from NYCOM regarding and email account months ago. I have been trying to log in by answering the challenge questions but I cannot access my password. I have called NYCOM and NYIT numerous times and have yet to have solved the problem. Anyone have a similar problem and have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

You'll need one like in the first link where you take the BP yourself. It doesn't matter so much which brand you get for these so if you're really impatient you can get that now. Most people say that littman is the Cadillac of stethoscopes so thats the brand I recommend. As far as an otoscope and ophtalmoscope, we used it for maybe 8 seconds total last year so I wouldn't know if one brand is better than the next. It will be to your advantage to wait though for all your equipment until the big bro big sis bbq before you buy anything- you get paired up with a second year and they may be able to tell you where to get it the cheapest. You also will not use this equipment for several months so there's no rush.

I'm not sure who you're talking to about this stuff in the tech department but if they're not really helping you email Dr. Kumar. He is the guy in charge of all the tech at NYCOM and he is extremely helpful and nice.

Hey Everyone! This is my first time posting even though i've been registered for quite sometime. I'm excited to meet all of you soon! :D

I just wanted to let everyone know that I spoke to a lady at the financial aid office today regarding the insurance. Although the NYCOM handbook says that you'll have the first two weeks to submit your insurance waiver forms, you should get the forms in asap so that you don't get billed for the insurance. That's atleast what she told me - someone else may want to confirm that.

Regarding the grants, NYCOM gave me nearly $2k this year and I received it back in April so it may be a first come first serve basis.

Additionally, someone had requested a company from which they could get a gradPlus loan - I just wanted to let you know that i used EdAmerica and they seemed to be really good. I decided to go with them because they were ranked #2 in Google and seemed legit. Hope this helps.

I also asked about the insurance. I can't get the waiver filed until I enroll because I can't get on my mom's insurance until the first day of orientation. So they told me not to pay the insurance, and once I get the waivers filed, any interest and whatnot accumulated on the insurance will be dropped. Although I suppose it's a different case if you have continuing insurance.

Hey Musiclink! I don't mean to be forward, but is there any particular reason your insurance won't be active until orientation - such as lack of current enrollment in school? I was also under the same impression that my insurance wouldn't begin until I started school but when I called my insurance company they said if i submitted a copy of a bill they would reinitiate my insurance immediately. Check into that and maybe you can go ahead and send in your waiver forms as well.

I graduated in 2006, I can't be covered unless I'm a full time student. Since I spent the year working, I took out a COBRA plan, but that's not accepted. And also, my insurance won't accept anything but an enrollment letter, which I can't get until I am actually enrolled. I guess they figure that you can always drop out before you officially enroll, I don't know. Dominic told me sometimes you can send a copy of your acceptance letter or a bill, but they won't accept it. I'm not that worried, I'll just get it all sorted otu a bit later.

Hello all!!! I am gonna be a first year student and am still looking for housing...PM me if u have anything!!!

Hi all... I am a 2nd year. I have said this several times on here, but apparently no one read them, so I'll say it again....

FORGET ABOUT ALL THESE FORMS AND JUNK. Everything will get answered during orientation. You have 2 more weeks of fun. ENJOY THEM. Don't study, don't do anything school related. Move into your apartments, get drunk (or whatever u do for fun if you aren't a drinker) meet some classmates, and have fun. Do you honestly care about your financial aid forms? Seriously. RELAX, have some fun, and get off your computers, because come Aug 20, you're going to wish you had.

Jason.... This goes for you too! (I hear you got invited to a party on Saturday, I think you need to go).

An update on the books:

Only Lippincott Pharm, the Cranial Nn. book, BRS Biochem, and PBL Anatomy are left.

Thanks.

did anyone get approved for their grad plus loans yet? based on my lenders website it says they are still waiting for nycom to reply--any similar problems?

Same here.

1. I'd wait till school starts till you buy equipment. That's my personal opinion. There's no rush to have anything for a couple of months anyway.

2. I'm 99% positive NYCOM won't accept your Cobra. The only things they'll accept are a spouses insurance that covers you or if your parents insurance still covers you. Cobra is usually around $600 a month anyway, right? I'm not sure why you would want to pay more than what NYCOM is offering. If you can get something cheaper, talk to NYCOm and they may accept it.

Let's say if you want to take less amount of unsub. federal stafford loans than they offered, what do you have to do?

i wrote nycom a letter stating the amount i want and then called the lender directly to see if nycom took care of it. they did.

I readjusted the amount of usub. federal stafford loans. You have to write a written statement how much you want to be taken off and fax it to financial aid office. Call the office of financial aid for there fax number and fax it over. If you just write an amount they will take half off this time and half off the next bill. Make sure you write how much in total as well as the amount for each billing semester. My letter was Basically to whom it may concern. I want to take out "X" dollars less than I originally signed up for. X for this bill and X for the next bill. Thank you. and signed my name.

Thanks a lot for the info Kappy.

Edit: Thank you as well littlephilly. I didn't see your post.

My dad is in medical supplies, so I doubt I'd find a better price through the school's sellers. Also, I don't know about all Cobra plans, but mine is around $300 a month, so $3600 a year. Still cheaper than the schools' plan, but not by much. But it's a good plan with a pretty low copay, only I don't get much perscription coverage, just for inahalers, chemotherapy, and injectable medications. And NYCOM won't accept it, at least, that's what they told me.

My Cobra coverage is $434 a month :( Guess it's NYCOM's insurance for me

It doesn't matter what your cobra costs, unfortunately, you can't keep it. You can only keep your current insurance if you are covered by a spouse or parent. You are not allowed to purchase insurance other than NYCOM's. If you don't prove that you are covered by a spouse or parent, they will automatically bill you, and you will be enrolled in the NYCOM plan (United Healthcare). It's pretty good coverage though. $10 copay. No referralls needed. Prescription prices range, but the most I've paid is $20. Also, everything at the clinic is free for all students, so unless you need to see a specialist, you don't pay any copays. They even do routine gyn exams, but not OB.

That's not bad at all...thanks for the info KateGia!

This stupid email issue is really starting to get to me lol. I called Dominic about a month or so ago asking why some people received email letters while others did not. He said only the double degree people got those letters and regular DO students get an email during orientation (is this true?). Then I see people posting instructions for setting it up now (i'll try it out tomorrow morning). I also tried to go into Noodle, but of course I would need my NYCOM email for that lol. Has anyone gone on Noodle yet, anything worth looking at?
Also, I just came back to the states from vacation and was wondering if anyone is going to the sendoff thing or if it'll just be me and the dean? And to all the guys upset about not getting an invite since it was "only sent out to blondes"...that is totaly not that case since I myself am a brunette ;). Enjoy the rest of your summer!:)

hey i got my nyit email account and i'm not a double degree student but for some reason the same username and password doesnt seem to be working for noodle for me. I have no idea.

Noodle is similar to blackboard. I'm not sure if anyone used that in college.

Noodle will have all your systems threads on there and from noodle you can download all the powerpoints/lecture notes. Sometimes you even take quizzes through noodle. I just checked though and the only "course" 2011 can add right now is 2011 General which is where they simply post general information like scheduling, etc. They seem to always e-mail out that information before they post it though so you probably already have whatever is posted there. Your fundamentals thread is not up yet. If it were I'd have been able to tell you guys what your schedule looked like but they haven't added it yet.

I got the letter on how to set up my email but it wasn't an email letter, it was just a regular letter. I think it may have been in the same letter that had the info on the webboard, but don't quote me on that. And I'm a regular DO student, no double degree for me.

I, and most people on this board, did not receive the email letter. We just set up the email account by ourselves using the id on the bill. and it works.

Out of curiousity....I set up my email address, but cannot figure out how to set up my noodle (or moodle) ID. Do you know where you do that? Thanks!

There is a link to it under web resources on NYCOM's site. Use your email address minus the @NYIT.com as your user name and your 6-digit NYIT ID number as your password (you may have to drop off a zero at the beginning to make it 6-digits). Once you do that, you'll have to click the "all courses" link at the bottom of the page where you'll see what's available to enroll in. Right now the only thing for 2011 is the General Information one.

The real thanks goes to Vix206, s/he was the first to post it. I reposted it for people who were still having trouble.

Hey guys...My mom and I save kittens and currently have 2 grey boy kittens about 3 months old. Very sweet and playful, look exactly like Russian Blues. They need a good caring home. They came out of a litter of five and the rest were already adopted. They have been tested and are healthy boys. If anyone is interested please PM me.

My guess would be that we won't have access until after orientation.
