For those waiting to hear from NYMC post-interview, I interviewed 4/8 and got the call this morning - they call to confirm you received an overnight package (which I did not). Just to give ya'll the heads up.

Now it comes down to Rochester vs. NYMC, hhhmmm....

GO RED SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!

goredsox! Congrats on another acceptance! You rock dude!
So....Rochester or Vahalla....Closer to the city or closer to Canada...hmmmm. 😉
Well either way good luck!

Yeah, I was thoroughly confused by the name when I first saw it too ("gored" + "sox" 😕 ). But eventually I figured it out and all was right with the world. Maybe if you had written it "GoRedSox"...

Anyway, congrats on the NYMC acceptance!

 That's some funny ish - GoRedSox definitely would have been better. Thanks for the congrats. And everything is definitely right with the world - the Red Sox are atop the AL Central!!!

You mean AL East, right? 🙂

Anyway, Goredsox!!

thinking one thing and writing another...I better not do that when I'm writing prescriptions!

thanks tedstriker!!!

Congrats,
I think we interview the same day and I got the call today as well. And like you I hadn't received it. It turns out they sent mine to my permanent address and when I call my pops to open it, it wasn't even my acceptance letter to me. Now I have to choose between a cheap state school and NYMC. Got any recommendations for me?

Recs:

Initially I'd say NYMC is too expensive to take over the state school. However, if you're interested in primary care or internal medicine, consider NYMC for their 6 year program. Traditional primary care tracks are 7 years (4 years med school + 3 yrs residency). At NYMC you start the internal med residency in your 4th year at St. Vincent hospital (GREAT hospital - where they treated a lot of the 9/11 victims) - and they completely waive your 4th year tuition.

Regardless of your interest, NYMC is advantageous because you can spend your 3rd and 4th years in NYC at an affiliated hospital. However, even with your state school you might be able to do visiting rotations anywhere you want.

Some of my friends recently graduated from med school and their opinions are that NYMC is very cutthroat. Their grading system is not P/F so there is a lot of competition.

Just a couple of thoughts...good luck!

goredsox, which school are you going to choose, NYMC or Rochester?

Tough choice - still not 100% sure but I'm thinking Rochester. The grading system at NYMC is just not my style - I need to be completely laid back with my classmates. Also, I've got a research background and Rochester is more of a place for me to explore more research if I feel the need. Still - it's hard to deny NYMC's location - right near NYC - and the opps to do 3rd and 4th year in the city (especially at St. Vincents). In the end, I'm relying on visiting clerkships if I'm trying to get out of Rochester for a bit and 10 feet of lake effect snow.

Got any thoughts on the matter solidgold?

I don't know too much about Rochester so I can't give you anything on them. As for NYMC, I have to agree with you about the grading system. The miniboards counting toward the final grade in the class sucks too. The location is nice and the chance to go to St. Vincents is hard to pass up. The students at NYMC are really worked the first year and its my opinion that is not necessary. Another thing about NYMC I did not like was the fact there is 8 people per cadaver in Gross lab and that anatomy is compressed into 3 months, but the new lab itself is incredible. I'm happy that I have the chance to go to NYMC and I will be able to overlook those negatives because what school does not have negatives, but if I get off the waitlist at University of South Florida, University of Cincinnati, or Saint Louis, I would withdraw from NYMC in a heartbeat because I think I would fit in and excel at those other schools because things are much more relaxed and simply better schools overall.

I have to agree with all that - the anatomy lab is nice but 3 months is pretty brutal. Congrats on your acceptance and good luck with those waitlists!

Hi Goredsox,

I also just recieved an accept from NYMC and I think I my views pretty much echo Solids'. Since Im in the same boat here is a composite list of pros/cons:

Cons:

Test schedule
Traditional curriculum
isolation
4 roomates unknown
car neccessary
lethargic attitude of students
Burn out factor due to test schedule might contribute to eventual decrease in performance.

Pros:
Good education/Board Scores
Possibly do better relatively when compared to other students; due to less competitive applicant pool.
Isolation could be good to focus.
22 hospitals to choose from
3rd and 4th year NYC

Any way thats my take, from my interview experience and staying with students in the dorms.

gluon, that pro/con list is almost exactly like mine. I think 95% of the people who interview there have the same impression (from what I get from SDN and others I spoke to in my interview group)

The dorm style living really turns me off because I got tired of it in college. I feel like a real adult now and I want to get a place of my own, but in NY its just too cost prohibitive.

Hey all I interviewed on or around 4/12 and got my acceptance on 5/20 or so. My letter was sent to my permanent address too plus I didn't get a call. O well. Either way I'm psyched I'm in and no worries but expectations.

red sox are now 1.5 in first, things are rolling.
