Two questions:

1. What is the easiest way to get from La Guardia to Grand Central? For my NYMC interview, I know to take the Metro North train, on the Harlem line (sorry, I don't know if that's the correct lingo or whatever, I'm from CA and don't know a train from a line, but you get the idea), to Valhalla or White Plains, and then take a cab from there to the school.

2. What is the easiest way to get from NYMC to AE? I have those two interviews back to back (NYMC first) so I'll be traveling straight from Valhalla to the Bronx.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm from southern CA (Orange County and San Diego - nothing like NYC!), I've never been to NYC or any other similar place that has trains/subways/taxis so I'm totally clueless on how to get around. So the more specific the directions, the better, as far as what to take and where and how much it'll cost.

Thanks so much!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I am also from So Cal (Tustin/Irvine area) and I also had back to back interviews w/ NYMC being first. Since I am completely inept when it comes to trains and busses, I just took a taxi. I can't remember how much it cost, but I am guessing about $20 (for sure no more than $40).

1. Sorry, can't help w/ the airport question. Flew into JFK.

2. I had a NYMC student refer to me a fav taxi service, which is key because the campus is sort of in the middle of nowhere. Therefore, it is important for the taxi service to be able to find you when picking you up. From there, it's all gravy. Einstein campus is very well known, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. Here's a tip: bring the directions of both schools given on their websites. It will help navigating go a lot smoother for your cab driver if any problems should surface. Just give them the directions and they can decide which route might be best, since traffic can vary depending on when you're traveling.

That's pretty much it. Email me if you have any more questions. Enjoy your interviews. Both schools are pretty different, but very good. I had a great time and hopefully you will too. If you're staying w/ a student, they should be pretty much done w/ finals, so have them show you the town. I had a blast, but my student hosts were party animals! Good luck and try to relax.

The best way to get to the Metro North from LaGuardia would be to take the M60 from LaGuardia to 125th St. and Park Ave. ($1.50 fare; coins only unless you have a metrocard or tokens). Here you can take the MetroNorth's Harlem line to Valhalla. It's cheaper and will save you a lot of time. Grand Central is in the opposite direction from where you want to go.

From NYMC, take MetroNorth Harlem line south to the Williams Bridge stop in the Bronx. Take a cab from there because otherwise you'll have to take 2 buses , which can take 30-60 minutes, and if you're pressed for time you won't want to do that. Cabs in the Bronx are not yellow like in Manhattan. They are usually Lincoln towncars or a similar make and the license plate numbers usually start with a T and the word 'livery' can be seen on the plates. Just flag one down when you see one coming. A cab from this spot should be no more than $12 and will probably cost less, maybe $8. If you still want bus directions to Einstein from Williamsbridge let me know and I'll tell ya.

check the MTA's site for Metro North fares www.mta.nyc.ny.us

Unless you have money to spend, you might not want to take cabs directly from LaGuardia to NYMC and NYMC to Einstein. These locations are pretty far apart and will definitely be pricey. But if you have that kind of money, hey, go for it.

pm me if you need anymore help

good luck!!

The cheapest way, from NYMC, split a cab with other interviewees back to the north white plains station. (the north white plains station is closer to nymc than the white plains station. if someone has already purchased a ticket from the white plains station, they just have to pay the difference for taking the train one stop earlier, which is like 50&cent) Take the train back to Grand Central Station. While there, purchase a $3 Metrocard for the subway/bus. You'll swipe it to get in the subway, then when you get to the bus you'll swipe it again and it'll count as a free transfer. Then you can use the same Metrocard to get back after your AECOM interview. At GCT, catch the Uptown/Bronx No. 5 train from GCT to East 180th Street. Go up and outside and cross the street to catch the Morris Park Avenue/Bx 21 bus to Eastchester Road.

This may seem confusing, but it's actually quite simple once you get going. I, too, am from California, so I know how overwhelming New York public transportation can be. I recommend this if you don't have too much luggage to haul around. I also recommend printing out a map of the New York Subway system: New York City Subway Route Maps very helpful. PM me if you have any questions.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I'll have to figure out which route to take. I read on another thread to "never" get off at 125th St. station. Or something like that. Is that some kind of NYC inside joke thing or what?? Thanks again and any other additional routes and tips will be greatly appreciated!🙂 🙂

125th street is in harlem.

125th street is not as nice as Grand Central but definitely closer. It's in a not so fabulous neighborhood (Harlem) but the train station is pretty safe and the bus lets you off right in front of the station. I'm a little white chick not originally from NYC and haven't had any problems. Just pay attention to who/what's around you and you'll be fine.

Good luck at the interviews!
