NYMC or Univ of Oklahoma?

Hi Everyone,

I've been a long time reader and recently a member. I've been accepted to Univ of Oklahoma COM (I'm in-state), but I just got an email from New York Medical Center (NYMC) for an interview. I was wondering academically which one will be more prestigious in terms of applying for residencies, etc. Also, is it even worth it to go? Are most of NYMC's spots probably full? Of course I have many other factors to consider (money, family, location, etc.), but I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

OU COM:
1) Cheaper, roughly 22k per year less (pro)
2) Close to home, 15mins away from my family (pro)
3) same prestige
4) lower average board scores (con)
5) worse match stats(based on gossip/hearsay) (con)
6) Bad reputation for matching in California (where my fiance is and where I plan to do my residency) (con)

NYMC SOM:
1) Higher avg board scores (pro)
2) close-knit community (pro)
3) close to NYC (pro)
4) better match stats (based on gossip/hearsay) (pro)
5) same prestige
6) more expensive (con)

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I'm leaning towards going on the interview and just seeing if I get in first, then hopefully this thread can help me decide. Keep up the great input!

Neither school is that much more prestigious than the other. Go with the cheaper option - Oklahoma.

An interview this late in the cycle seems less likely to turn into an acceptance from what I've seen. And you can get into any residency from either institution if your board scores, clerkship evels, LORs, etc are competitive.

Oklahoma. It's entirely possible to land a good residency by killing Step I and your rotations. Wouldn't you like to graduate knowing you had >100k less debt hanging over your head?

every interview date has open spots.

I personally like/fell in love with NYMC but 100k less debt and the way things are looking for the future physicians of tomorrow....

I would go to the interview but I will note that finaid is already in process for need based grants and you may not receive as much as those already finished with their application.

NYMC is not the most prestigious as far as med schools go. I'd go with OU and save a buttload of cash. You can go to football games!

Maybe go to the interview. See if you'd be eligible for any scholarships (probably not, with a late interview, but it'd be worth a trip up there imo). I 100% agree with saving a buttload of money, but if there's any way you can get NYMC to be closer in price to OU, then I think you should choose based on other criteria (ie. which school did you LIKE the best on the interview day, which do you think you'll be happier at, which city you'll like more, etc.).

Oh, and boomer sooner, but most med students I know from OU didn't attend too many games. I think I attended as many this year as most of them did (2 games).

Do you want to end up in NY? Then NYMC. If you plan on moving back to Oklahoma, clearly that's the right choice.

NYMC will give you a much better shot at NY residencies, but both the school and the rest of life will be more expensive. Also, you will spend your first two years in Westchester, possibly the last two as well, so you won't be spending as much time in the city as you'd think.

my fiance is actually staying in Berkeley for grad school, so im planning to do a residency in California.So I guess the biggest factor for me would be how the school can help or hurt my chances of getting to a residency in CA. During my interview at OU, the dean of medicine mentioned how most of the ppl get matched to great residencies but that the CA programs still see OU as backwards. I'm not sure if I should take that as a strong indicator.

Try to find match lists. CA is rough for almost all specialties, make sure you wouldn't be the first to go there for what interests you.

I too was accepted at NYMC, but it is a late interviews. Late interviews traditionally has mostly resulted in a waitlist. Even if you are accepted, NYMC's tuition is probably going to be 50K next year, housing is not cheap, even the on campus ones, trust me, I live 15 minutes away. 100K difference in 4 years will translate to 2000K difference by the time you pay off the loan. I think it is good to have a different perspective and if you didn't go to a lot of interviews already, then I say go, but chances are that money gap will be too insurmountable and thus OU.

OU changed to a systems-based curriculum two years ago, meaning the board scores haven't been published yet for the second years who are about to take Step 1. Thus the scores should rise slightly, assuming they've hammered out the kinks.

OU has a so-called bad reputation for matching in California because hardly anybody at OU wants to go to California. The bad reputation should be for not wanting to go to California instead of matching there.

Any decisions? I am in the exact same boat as you.Deciding between NYMC and OU. Unfortunately both are out of state for me so when you take the money out of the equation it makes the decision much harder! Any more input would be great. Thanks so much
