Well my decision is final and NYC here I come.

So who is joining me at NYU?

I don't want to be all alone at orientation, so lets get to know each other!!!

I would love to join you... but i was put on the waiting list. Know anything about the waiting list for NYU?

-Steven

ok, this is funny... out of a class of nearly 250 people only 2 people have joined this list!!! it will be a very intimate white coat ceremony guys!

Waiting Comet!

Sorry! Haven't been on SDN for a while.

But I am very excited about being at NYU in August.

See you at orientation!!

You can PM me if you like:

Hi everyone,
I'm really excited about joining you guys at NYU! See you all at orientation.

I'll be there too!

Where is everyone living?😀

Hello new classmates
I am excited about heading to NYU this summer. I am looking for housing at the moment and am pondering the 26th Street dorms. Has anyone seen them or signed up for these?

Hey everyone! I will also be joining you all at NYU. Is everyone planning on living at 26th St? Did anyone purchase a laptop yet? Looking forward to meeting you in August!

Hi Bubbles,
I'm not sure if you recieved a packet from the NYU Bookstore about the laptops but there are only 3 computers we can choose from. The dental school has minimum system requirements so we have to be carefull to get the right computer if we're going to buy one before we get to school. I think I'll just wait 'till I get there to buy mine so I can try them out in person and take advantage of the payment plan they offer through the NYU computer store. (you can pay for the laptop in 4 installments, interest free). That seems like a pretty good deal, and a friend of mine whose a D2 did the same thing and recomends I buy mine when I get there.

The NYU store claims they have the best prices for the specific laptops the Dent.School requires since they work out some kind of contract with the manufacturers, but I havn't shoped around to make sure this is true.

Anyways, hope that helps. See you at NYU

🙂

I have been shopping around for lap tops and it appears that NYU's bookstore is slightly cheaper than anywhere else I have looked. Anyone else have input?

The laptops they offer are more than slightly cheaper. They include a 3 year on site warrenty and a 3 year accidental warrenty in case you get mad and punch it 😀

It comes out to be between $300-500 cheaper depending on the model you choose.

Oh yeah and make sure you get a model with the new Pentium M chip. Not only will you get a built in wireless modem but also around twice the battery life.

And one last thing. Don't be scared that they offer a 1.3 ghz Pentium M bec they will out perfrom a 2.0 ghz Pentium 4.

Another words...they are offering a sweet deal!!!

Hi guys. Thanks for the replies about the laptops. I was slightly confused about whether we were required to purchase only from the list they gave, but I emailed and called the bookstore and they said those were just recommendations. The lady said that IMB and Dell laptops with the new Centrino chip work the best with the dental programs. She also said you could buy any brand or model you wanted, as long as the laptop meets the minimum requirements.

Hi Guys,

I'm not going to NYU (Tufts instead), but I thought I'd add my 2 cents to the laptop discussion.

First off...Brocnizer, I'm sorry, but could you please post some links as to where you saw that a 1.3 moblie P outperforms a P4 2.0GHz?. I'll admit that they do better in terms of battery performance, but for everything else...no.

IMO, a laptop purchase is a huge investment. Dropping 3-4 grand is not fun, particularly when ur paying 40 grand on top of that for tuition and other things like alcohol 🙂.

Anyways, you want to but a laptop that will not only perform for you in Dental School, but that will last and not become obselete in 2 months cuz u decided to spend $500 less. Thus you have to look at EVERYTHING that a company is offering to you.

Your processor is important, but not the end all. There are many options right now...the Mobile P4 , the P4 desktop in a laptop, the Centrino. It just depends on what u want to spend and what you want to do with you lappy (the graphics card, the hard drive speed, the type of memory are all important)

If you're only looking to use your laptop for looking at lecture notes and surfingt he net, then the centrino and the mobile P4 will do you well. (But don't forget to look at the graphics card (at least 64 mb) which will help you in your viewing experience. )

If you want to do other stuff like play games, watch DVDs, etc.... GET A P4 desktop processor. You won't be able to bring it to class for more than 2 hours cuz of the low battery life, but you'll be able to do many more things with a desktop replacement laptop.
(IMO, if i'm dropping a couple of grand, I'm getting all I can 🙂)

Also, only 3-5 companies make all the laptops for every comapany in the world, they just sell them as their own.

A few sites to look at are:

http://pctorque.com/products.php (For low priced desktop replacements.)

http://www.mobileperipherals.com/

http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html

of course Dell and the others are good as well, but you'll be paying much more fore the same thing.

Hope this helps.

Here you go:

http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/processors/index.htm?iid=ipp_home+note_processor&

Click on "compare performance" and it shows how a Pentium M centrino 1.7 ghz will out perform a Pentium 4M 2.6 ghz.

A quote from the dell website:

"The Pentium M is designed to yield performance beyond advertised processor speeds. On many industry standard benchmarks, the Pentium M at 1.6 GHz performed comparably to the Mobile Pentium 4-M at 2.4 GHZ. See chart below for one example:" The chart would not paste.

The reason is that the new Pentium M has 1mb of cache!!! WOW, now thats alot of processing power. If you buy from NYU there is no way anyone will beat the price. Trust me on this.

For instance, the D600 the school is selling is for $1705 while Dell sells it for just a hair above $2000 but thats only bec they are running a promo now.

GET THE CENTRINO!!! You'll thank yourself when you walk around NYC and hit some wireless hotspots and surf the web.

Oh another thing, the school will repair Gateway, Apple, Dell, and I think HP so try to stick to thise bec you'll get your laptop back in working order faster.

I too will be joining the NYUCD class of 2007! And I bought my Dell Latitude laptop from NYU's bookstore and not from the Dell website, since it was cheaper. Hopefully I will get into the 26th Street apartments...it's a bit unsettling that orientation is less than 2 months away and I still haven't received any info on where I am living. (Has anyone received their housing information yet?)

see you in August,
res03

Hi guys!
i havent posted much since i joined sdn this february, but i keep up with the discussions...i guess you can tell from my screenname that i'm heading to nyu this august. really excited! i just bought my laptop from the computer store also. it's the D600...and for the specs, it's significantly cheaper than buying it from directly from dell..
Havent heard from housing yet...but i'll probably end up in 26th street...although that's not neccesarily a good thing...i've stayed there a couple of times since i have friends in d2 and d3. they just bought some new buildings on 1st and 19th (or somewhere around there), and i think that building is called styversons (i'm not sure how to spell it). but those apartements are really nice compared to the 26th street ones. 26th st. totally reminds me of undergrad dorms...security is really uptight, and you cant even have guests comeover at anytime without having to personally check them in downstairs...and that's a hassle if you live on the 14th floor and have to go up and down one of the 2 really slow elevators...plus, half the building has undergrads living in it...which gets really annoying once you realize that being a dental student is totally different from your undergrad days.
Hope to see you all at orientation!!

So you guys look at your schedule yet on Albert? Doesn't seem too bad. Well anyway my question is that I have a $2000 balance at the brusars office, shouldn't it be $2500 since thats the total of all the deposits?

Oh yeah, I see we have a few PF classes. I assume that stands for pass/fail. If this is the case, how do they compute into your GPA?

Yea, you will have a couple of Pass/Fail courses. Those courses aren't calculated into your GPA. They're pretty much useless courses, but be careful b/c there are a couple of people that had to remedial those courses in the summer.....which is right now! (I feel so bad for those guys)

Anyways, IMO, first semester wasn't too too demanding. 2nd semester is a different story. It really got tough from May on...(yea, 2 months doesn't sound too bad, but trust me, when it's warm and sunny outside and you see undergrads moving out for the summer while you are stuck in the library for 8-10 hours/day, it's pretty bad)

Good luck your first year!

Hey guys and gals

Do we need to collect teeth like some of our other dental counterparts?

I never recieved a letter stating that we should, but just making sure.

no, havent heard about any teeth collecting...but the friends i have in d2 and d3 told me that faculty is talking about somehow weighing in students' own oral hygiene into their gpa. Isnt that strange? it's supposed to be some new educational approach they're starting...about how you're your own very first patient. anyone know what's up with that?

Well kinda makes sense. You know, practice what you preach.

I wouldn't go to a dentist with teeth rotting out every which way 😱

Hi everyone. I was just wondering which loan lenders people have chosen at NYU and why. Did anyone choose anything other than Citibank or Nellie Mae?

I picked Nellie Mae bec I hate citibank and all they stand for. I worked for Citibank for two years and I was pretty much trained to screw people over.

Anyways. The day after all my loans were approved I was told on here about Access Group. I was going to switch but access group is not a prefferd lender in NY state, which all it means is that they do work the old fashion way through snail mail and not digital transmission. So for me to switch would take 12 weeks!!! Well I'm not taking the risk of not having money for class but next year I'm going with Access Group.

Oh and Nellie Mae does offer a sweet deal. 1% below prime and no fees on the private loan

Hope that helps!!!

for all you NUYCDer's

when does the class start?? i have heard 2 different dates. August 22 or September 1st?? (i am trying to sqeeze myself in there by then!)

thx

Comet

My letter states:

Orientation to NYUCD will be Aug 14 through the 22nd.

I assume we can't be at Orientation and class at the same time so I'm shooting for 1st...maybe 😕

this is actually nice... but what is happening between August 22nd and September 1st?? is there anthing planned for those days or are those your vacation days??😎

Comet

thx broccoli, this gives me 3 extra days to bug Amy!!

Hey Comet

Seems like you would be a great classmate. Heard anything new on the waitlist movement?

Keep on bugging them!!!

Hey Guys and Gals!!!

As of now I will not need housing bec I will be staying with my unlce. But just in case the commute becomes a hassle I am looking for some places.

Have any of you heard of or have any experience with www.MyNyApt.com ???

Seems like they offer deals too good to be true.

Been looking in villagevoice also. Any other good sources to look for places?

Oh yeah, what are you all currently paying

Sorry I know I should not have posted this here. But if it is possible can you guys list your stats. I am looking into NYU because I will not be able to leave the NYC area. Thanx.😱

I am looking to sublet a place for the month of august and possibly september while I find a place to rent or buy. Try the new york times. They have listings online with great pictures.
Craigslist.com has great places with no fees, fees, etc.
I checked out that website you mentioned. I have no idea why the prices are so cheap, but there must be something wrong with it??? I will ask my real estate agent and let you know.

Has anyone recieved an account statement from NYU recently?
I just recieved mine and after all the tuition , vital book fees, health insurance, etc, I am left with about 10K to live off of.
How do you live off of 10K for 6 months in NYC????
Did anyone recieve the same statement?

What is the maximum loan that we are alowed to take out.
I think 10,000 is for 5 months, but still that is not enough. I have not get my loan yet so I don't know how much is left for the living expense.

Also the apartments listed on that mynyapt.com is too good to be true. I don't think that is the true listing b'cose that can't be. We all know that one bedroom apt in Manhattan goes for atleast 1,500 and up and by no means they are luxury.

I think the max amount you are allowed to take out is 38K/semester, 76K/year
After all the tuition and other necessities, you are left with 10K to live from. All this housing makes me wish I was going to Indiana
😕

Beagle, hell yeah you should've come to IUSD! 😀 You're from here, I assume? This is our first week, and things are off to a great start in our class--lots of collaboration, most everyone seems friendly and open, and the PBL curriculum is looking like it has a LOT of potential. Plus, in-state tuition means government loans are enough for a pretty handsome living by grad school standards 😉

Does anyone know exactly how much NYU's tuition is. On my interview they gave me a sheet of paper that estimated 60k /year, but afterwards I was informed that those numbers are not accurate and they are raising their tuition. I called Amy knowles and she told me that it's "confidential information" and I would not be able to find out their tuition unless they accept me off the wait list. Can anyone here please inform all those on the wait list how much we're expected to pay if accepted. Thanks, britesmile.

I don't know where you got 60K or may be I am wrong. But the tuition is around 40K, but yes if you add other stuff to if if might get close to 55. The bill that I received was for 25k (minus the deposite), and if we get 38 then it leaves me with 13k, which I think is enough for 5 months. But still it is pushing it.

Can anyone please clearify this????
Thanks

I got a bill for 27,803 for the semester.
I wonder why we got different statements?
That minus the 38K leaves me with 10,291 which is really pushing it!

I really do not understand this. If we spend around 1500 a month for the rent, for 5 months that leaves us with 2500 for food, clothing, trasportation and etc, that is almost 500 a month. How are we going to survive on this???

This is really weird. And I had not realized this until I received my statement three days ago.
Any comments from second year students???

Yup. My bill says 27,803 but i'm only being charged 25,303. I think I figured it out. Subtract your deposit from the bill and you get your $25k. The reason its like that its bec the money was there before the bill.

Another thing. All of my loans were approved...have the papers in front of me but on Albert it doesn't say my private is. Is this an issue for anyone else???

I knew those apt prices were too good to be true. I almost feel like spending the $60 to see what kinda scam it is...if thats what it is. Thanks Beagle for asking your realtor.

Hey conf88, I tried sending a reply to your PM but your mailbox is full

hey all this is my first post on SDN, but anyway, im also gonna be at nyucd this august. seems like the majority of you chose the dell d600 as your laptop choice, does anyone have any cheaper solutions?

-ashish

If you want a cheaper model, just go for any company that meets the min requirements. I wanted to go alittle above the min bec I hate buying a new pc every other year.

They recommend like Dell, Apple, and IBM but don't worry about it. I emailed them and they said you could use any brand you want as long as you meet the min.

ya thats what i was thinking but i wasn't quite sure. thanks for the input
