HEY ALL, I am currently a post bac student at UF and want to go to NYU for medical school. PLEASE EMAIL ME ANY INFO/EXPERIENCE ON NYU WHATSOEVER.
- Okay seriousl;y, I just love NY even though I've never been, NYU seems to put a good deal of emphasis on early clinical exp., and also focuses on the social aspect of medicine and patient care, patient history, group work in their curriculum and is next to the TISCH school of arts.... PLS LET ME KNOW ABOUT NYU, I haven't looked much into other schools except maybe VCU and Georgetown or UF......ALL COMMENTS WELCOME.

I plan to take the MCAT next year in Aug, and apply for the yr. 2005. I am also a dancer and hope to convience NYU to offer me an MD degree and MFA in dance as well. Well, let me know if I'm crazy or something but I hear NYU is a little more liberal in their student choices of study in the MD/PHD program.
SO far in prep. for NYu
- I volunteer at the Shands Hospital Arts in Medicine Program doing patient bedside refrerrals for art and dance
- I do research at the Mcknight Brain Institute in Neuroscience/Psychiatry
- I work as a unit clerk in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit
- I have a bachelors in sociology, minor in dance (received dance in healing certificate)
- started the first undergrad chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) at UF
- ok, the list goes on, AM I NYU MATERIAL OR WHAT , JUST KIDDING
Thanks.

Well, I can't speak about NYU but I think in general alot of schools like to see dancers. It must seem odd to hardcore science types, but you should have not trouble at alot of the other schools here in the city and they seem very openminded as well which always helps ... good luck!

I think NYU is a great school. I did my undergrad there and will be doing research there this summer. I'm starting Post-bacc in September. Just so you know NYU Med is in a different campus altogether from the 'downtown' (Washington Sq.) NYU campus where Tisch School of Arts is located.

The students I have met are really nice and easygoing, the location is great (right by the water) and the Professors seem to be approachable. I hope to be applying in '05 as well, and NYU will definately be on my list. Feel free to PM me if you any particular questions 🙂

Hey earthwhisper.
Nice to see another dancer on the forum.
This school sounds great for you. My only question is: do you plan on doing the MFA and MD at the same time? Are you asking them to use the MFA as a part of the PhD program? I'll be curious to hear what you're doing. I'm off to GWU and hope to find enough time to attend some dance classes.

I don't know if any school will actually go for an md/phd with an mfa in place of the phd. I may just have to go to med school and then go back to dancing or danc ein b/w or just take a few years off to try to dance first. I do know of a girl at Harvard who is doing her PHd portion of the MD/Phd in film making and is currently making/directing films or something like that after her 3rd year....So it may be possible. There are also options of supporting a danc ein medicine program (they have one at Uf as part of the Arts in Medicine Program) but I think I just want to dance outside of medicine, so we'll see, who knows? Let me know about any other ideas. Where do you dance/what kind?

You will have an easier time convincing med schools to go for your idea if you can tie dancing into medicine. I can't imagine they would give an MD/PhD spot to someone who wanted to do the PhD (MFA) in something utterly unrelated to medicine. Even if you really want the two to be separate, you should have a pitch that ties them together, eg, dancing as therapy, orthopedics, etc. You will have enough trouble convincing a med school to go for the MFA--even more if you don't plan to use it as a physician. Good luck--I hope your plans work out.

That makes sense, there anre many ways of tying dance to medicine. I think dance goes along way as emotional therapy as well as a way to get someone physically moving in physical therapy w/o scary sounding terms or just telling them to do something they know is going to hurt anyway. I may be having the opportunity to volunteer at a pain clinic in the neuro dept. at the hospital and work with pts. through dance......Thanks for the advice. IF ANYONEELSE HAD ANY GENERAL INFO ON NYU OR NY IN GENERAL AS FAR AS GETTING IN AND PREPARING FOR THE MED SCHOOLS ESPC. NYU, PLEASE LET ME KNOW OR EVEN ABOUT MOVINF TO NY IN GENERAL. THANKS.

Students going to NYU are often those who just missed getting into the most prestigious med schools.Their MCAT scores are very high.Your academic record will need to be quite strong. In addition to NYU I would suggest researching many other schools to give yourself the most options.see below
"In an effort to help candidates file realistic applications and save the costs associated with applying to medical school we provide the following academic profile of recent entering classes:
Median Grade Point Average: 3.6
Median MCAT Scores: Verbal Reasoning: 10; Physical Sciences: 11; Biological Sciences: 11; Writing Sample: 0

Applicants with GPAs below 3.4 and MCAT scores below 10 in the science sections are urged to strengthen their academic credentials before applying to NYU."
