Hey everyone. I was just wondering if those of you who have decided to attend NYU have already bought a laptop. I wanted to know what kind (brand, model) was good to get and where is the best place to purchase it. I know that the NYU computer store was an option, but was wondering if anyone has bought over the internet. Thanks!

Hiya Bubbles81 -

I am planning to purchase my laptop in about a week or two. After some online research and calls to the computing specialists at NYU, I have decided to buy either a very lightweight Dell Inspiron (since schlepping a heavier laptop around NY is no fun), or a Dell Latitude (one of the models with a larger screen). And I'm definitely going to give Dell a call (@ 1-800-915-3355) soon so that I can order the laptop. Hope this helps!

NYUCD'07 🙂

Get anything that uses AMD processors, you will save a lot of cash and get better performance. HP, Sony, Toshiba, and Compaq all sell them retail, and pretty much anyone but Dell does online. Dell does make a good computer, but its more expensive.

Of course, with that tuition at NYU, you may just be better off with a notebook and an abacus.

A friend of mine (who is a systems engineer) is going to build my laptop at the NYU as well as the Dell site to see how the pricing compares. I will probably buy it from wherever its more cost-effective. And if the cost is only slightly higher at NYU, then I will get it from NYU because their payment deferrment is well worth it.

Anyways, I will post the pricing data on this thread in about a week or so.

Hey,

Well I am not attending NYU, but am researching the plethora of laptops out there. A good start would be to decide what type of laptp you want (desktop replacement, light&thim, mainstream).

Take a look at these sites for some reviews:

1) http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,4148,9,00.asp

2) http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1026.html?tag=st.re.9870989.ont.1026

3) www.anandtech.com

Apparently all the notebooks available are made by only 3-5 companies and then resold as Dell, Sony, HP etc.

A good desktop replacement I found is made by Sager:

or http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html

These are AMAZING...tv tuner, 3.06 GHZ w/ HT, 16 inch screen and everything else u could want in a computer...and the price is similar to those of Dell's, but with much better hardware.

Hope this helps.
