Hey everyone--

just wondering where people plan on living next year at NYU Dental. Is everyone going to live in the dorms? nearby apartments? distant apts.?

Any input would be appreciated from past, current, or future students.

Thanks

si

I am strongly considering living in the dorm, especially for the first year, since I am not familiar with NYC at all. Additionally, the dorms are walking distance from NYU and are ready for wireless internet. Moving into an apartment immediately is more feasible for folks who know the city.

Check the Village Voice classifieds. They have a lot of apartment listings in that area (Kips Bay/Murray Hill) and it works out to be a bit cheaper that the dorms (you can find a studio for 800 a month but they go fast).

Ideally you'd like to live on 19th street/ 2nd Avenue since it's exactly in between NYUCD (24th/1st) and the Paladium gym (14th/3rd).

Hopefully this link will work, but if not just go to www.villagevoice.com then Classifieds=>Real Estate=>Residential for Rent=>Unfurnished (or Furnished if you choose) Apts/Manhattan. There's going to be at least 800 items so be patient and look around.

I have been seriously considering living in the 26th street dorm, yet I really wish that I knew some more about it before sending off my housing app. Anyone hear any positive or negative things?

Thanks,

i was in your position last year and wished somebody would have told me info about 26th street to put me at ease. so i'll try to fill you guys in on dorm life here at 26th street.

rent here is more expensive than a typical nyc apartment. but, if you can stomach it, i'd definitely do 26th street the first year. i met all my close friends here. internet connection is super fast. I would say most of the students here live in 26th street dorms. living across the street from the dental school is really nice.

26 st. isn't elegant/clean at all, but you just deal w/ it. most people here now are gonna move out 2nd year anyways.

most people here will get their own rooms, but will share a kitchen and bathroom (there's no living room). i only know one other person that got shafted here and got stuck in a shared studio (2 people in 1 room).

Ok, time to watch Duke struggle...

I am not going to attend NYU, but I have lived in nyc for the past 4 years. In my oppinion, considering the NYU dental school location, one could live in a studio or small apartment in brooklyn and use public transportation, which runs 24 hrs and is reliable at least for new york city. I have lived in dorms before and I would like to have more privacy especially for dental school - it can get pretty crazy in the dorms. I know people who go to NYU and live in Brooklyn - just a 10 - 15 min subway ride away, and it's a lot cheaper, too. Anyways, I would say check out all the options before settling for the dorms.

I plan on living in the 26th st. dorm, but how do they decide who shares the apartment with you? Maybe I'm picky about who I live with, but it's not just a random assignment right? Hopefully there's some sort of criteria they use to pair people up and determine compatibility??

Just wondering, for anyone who can help me out. Thanks.

any other info out there? anyone know any current students to ask?

does anyone know, in the 26th st. dorms, are there any singles with your own bathroom? or does every type of room have a shared bathroom?

thanks

any other info on outside apts. would be appreciated as well. this is my first time living away from home, so im in a bind.... i dont know what to do. living in the dorms would be nice to alway have people around, but at the same time i like to be alone once in a while, so i dont like to deal with others in situations like that. also, i dont know if i could share a bathroom with someone.

Hi!!
i'm new to this site...been reading posts for a couple of days...
I'll be starting at NYUCD this fall...pretty thrilled about it...

Here's the lowdown on the 26th street apts:
I have a couple of close friends who are in 2nd year there...I've visited a couple of times...and have ended up staying in the 26st street apts...for a couple of days...
I'll have to admit, they're not the nicest place to live. You get your own bedroom (in a 2 bedroom "apartment"). Inbetween the 2 bedrooms, there is a common area which includes a mini-kitchen, a very small common/living/dining area which is pretty cramped...and a bathroom for you to share with your apartment-mate. While i was up there...i ended up seeing many people's apartments...none of them actually utilized the "common area", it was usually stacked with storage cartons, ironing board...stuff like that...and the kitchen is pretty small...so you dont really feel like doing much cooking...creates a messy clutter quickly...so basically, your whole life is in your room....which comes with a bed, dest, armchair...has a descent closet (descent for guys, probably very tiny for girls).
Even with all these drawbacks...i dont mind living there...because you get to meet a lot of people and end up making lasting friendships...plus, it's right across the street from the dental school...one more thing...it has 24 hour security...which is really annoying...you have to sign in any guests...and leave their ID with the front desk...that's understandable for the Undergrads who share that building...but i think it's rediculous for dent students.
However...NYUCD just aquired a new building, a couple blocks from the school....it's a lot nicer, bigger...i saw one of those apartments...they're 2 bedroom, wood floors, nice kitchen, big rooms, and a nice roomy living room...I'm trying to find out how to get into one of those...but i heard that it's really hard for 1st years to get one.....

just wondering if any one had info on the nicer and larger dorm/apt. at NYU that are mentioned in the post above.

thanks

si
