How difficult is it to get into NYU's neurosurgery residency? Does anybody know their residents? What kind of board scores are they looking for? I'm a second year at a small Midwest state school, will I have a chance, or are they interested in students from big time schools only?

    Thanks in advance.

We had someone match at NYU or neurosurgery from our class at a good but not big name midwest private school this year. I don't know his exact stats, but he is a pretty bright guy who I am sure cracked at least 230 or 240 on his Step I and did well on his rotations. However, he was not AOA. So its definitely possible.

Yeah, I know the guy. The other guy who matched at NYU Neurosurgery is from Vanderbilt.

From what I know, getting good clinical grades and breaking 235-240 on Step I will give you a good shot.

Im just curious (or just dense) - did you mention that he wasn't AOA because they have a better or less chance of getting such a residency?

Sorry for the confusion, AOA is an honor society that usually includes the top 15% of med students in a class. I was not referring to the American Osteopathic Association.

Ahh, okay. Thanks for the clarification!

Do you guys know if it is possible to enter a general surgery residency and then switch to neurosurgery? As I understand it the neurosurgery match has a separate early match, however, the general surgery does not. How does this work? I've seen plenty of docs (at B&W and MGH) that started off as a general surgery intern for a year and then somehow magically became a neurosurgery resident. Is the general surgery internship and neurosurgery residency matched at the same time?

    Thanks,

    Careofme

As I understand it, the neurosurgery residency is built in with a one year general surgery internship (that can be done at an outside location) after which the neurosurgical training begins. However, I don't think a categorized gen.surg intern can just jump into the neurosx track. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the feedback! I just finished my second year exams and it doesn't look like I'm going to be AOA <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />
