I've heard people are happier at Mt. Sinai. Go with your gut feeling though.
Good luck.

There is no competition dude....from the previous threads people went with Mt. Saini and were MUCH happier

I got accepted to both when I applied and ended up choosing NYU. The whole "happier" argument is really BS because you will really never know unless you have ATTENDED both schools. I know of people who chose sinai over NYU and vice versa. The reputation issue is really out the window because both schools are comparable. I don't want to start any controversy so do your own research about the pros and cons about each school. As far as how "happy" I am at NYU- I think I couldn't have made a better choice. Good luck with your decision either way you choose.

both are good schools; Sinai students may be a little happier. It IS known as Camp Sinai, though, and preclinical work is supposedly easy, no grades, etc. Clinical years may be a different story, as many of the Sinai residencies are supposedly malignant, which can affect students too.

Reputations are comparable, but most would agree that NYU is a little better; and match lists are definitely better at NYU. Bellevue means a lot for student education at NYU, and only a few other public hospitals offer a comparably strong clinical experience. The benefit of having a nearby undergrad campus is there, but of course it's not exactly next door.

I'd choose NYU if I were in your shoes. best of luck either way.

MSSM has cheap subsidized dorms. At NYU, you either pay for their ridiculously expensive (and tiny) dorms, or you go out and fend for yourself.

Amen.

And they're cheap, subsidized APARTMENTS, as opposed to isolated rooms with hall bathrooms and kitchens. Though the scrub replacement machine at NYU was wicked...

That's pretty much how I decided that one.

I visited NYU during a trip to NYC and was fortunate enough to view the first-year medical dorms. That effectively lowered NYU from a top-tier choice to a bottom-tier choice for me. However, NYU does have a better location than Mt. Sinai, in my opinion.

I just can't believe how much people complain about dorms...as if they mattered. If you are going to be in NYC, get used to small, old, and expensive.

i am totally adamant about not living in dorms even if i end up in nyc. if i go to columbia, i will live across the bridge in new jersey where i'll be able to have a halfway decent apartment. no sh*tty studio for me. that being said, i actually thought nyu's dorms were way bigger than ones i'd seen at other schools. i still wouldn't live in them but they do seem reasonably sized for dorms- the one we saw had a full or queen sized bed and a couch in at along with desk, dresser, etc.

$575 per month at rubin is "ridiculously expensive?" Dude, have you ever seen apartments in the city? Plus, outsiders are totally oblivious to the fact that rubin hall (the dorm) is a one year thing. After that, the ball is in your court as to where you want to live. Greenberg hall apartments (2-3 bed rooms or 1 bedrooms; and skirball (ritz calton) with their giant suped up apartments.

NYU doesn't have letter grades during 1 and 2 either. This thread is a mill for the misinformed.

but they're still ranked.

Yeah, only the top 40 students are ranked. And, besides, it's and informal rank. Nothing goes on your transcript and its not reported in dean's letters or anything like that. It's effectively a useless rank that you nor your future residency directors can see anyway.

you get four year housing at MSSM btw

uh...yeah, I haven't heard of any schools that offer housing that don't offer 4 years of housing. Have you?

I dont know, you tell me. I havent investigated the housing at all 126 allopathic medical schools, have you? I was just telling what I knew.

To OP,

I think both schools are about the same in reputation, education, research, etc. So I think it comes down to where you feel more comfortable at. I would go visit both schools again. Maybe you might get a different feeling from each when you are not under the pressure for interviews. Talk to students, staff, and faculty. Sit in on a lecture. Visit hospitals.

If I were you, I would choose NYU over Sinai. The reason being for me is that I have good friends there, so it would be so much easier for me to adjust to med school and still have fun. Good luck with your decision. I think both are excellent schools that I won't be going to. 🙁

When I checked with the admissions office about my status about a month ago, the lady told me that my file will be reviewed soon and they will let me know about an interview before mid-Feb. I haven't heard a thing since then. Only that email about not calling the office that everybody got recently. So I am thinking that nothing's happening for me at NYU. 🙁

that sucks! I haven't heard anything from them either. oh well, it's their loss! 😉

I agree with Dr. Chiquita. You should go where you'll be most comfortable and where you can see yourself more. I know a bunch of people who are first-years at NYU and they all love it. And I know that at least some of these people are being honest because they're family. I also worked at Sinai over the summer and their students seem happy as well. I really don't think the students at one school are significantly happier than the students at the other. With that said, I'll be at NYU next year. In my opinion, it has the best location in NYC if you are young....even if you're not in medical school. I also loved the people when I went to visit...and you really can't beat Bellevue for clinical experience. Good luck with your decision and maybe I'll see you next year!

thanks guys...there have been a lot of helpful comments in this thread. I guess I have a lot of time still to think about it and check out both of the schools. I know there is a second look weekend for NYU, but is there a second look weekend for Mt. Sinai as well?

Did you know that MSSM and NYU are allied to each other?
The difference lies in that NYU is more research oriented and much more expensive overall. When you graduate fomr MSSM your diploma will have New York University written on the diploma.
Dont know exactly why that is though.
