Family of UB Med. School grad battling COVID-19 wants their story to be a lesson for others

Adeline Fagan has been in the hospital for weeks battling COVID-19, her sisters are urging people to do their part in keeping the virus from spreading.

Just figured I'd post this since I saw it today and really realized I hadn't seen much publicity about residents getting seriously ill from COVID. 2nd year OB/GYN resident was working in the ED seeing COVID patients and has been hospitalized for over a month now and now on ECMO. I don't know much of what I want people to take away from it except I think it points to the risk that still exists for residents who have very little bargaining power in this situation. Also a reminder that mortality is not the only relevant outcome here...which I think a lot of people still forget.

Part of it is to pay for family to travel from NY to TX. That's not something that insurance would typically cover.

Very sad. One of the risks of working with Covid patients. Hope she pulls through and glad they put her on ECMO.

It says frequent travel to see her and compensation for the mom not working. I bet there isn't much leftover after health insurance but the family is replacing mom's income with this go fund me it seems.

Per twitter (from what looked like to be a reliable source), she is still on ecmo and recently got a trach.

We had a well publicized early COVID case in my area that was similar- guy in his 30s, ended up on ECMO, ultimately survived. Hopefully she makes it, what a nightmare

Unfortunately it probably only covers her resident salary.

Adeline Fagan, 28, who had been working in OB/GYN in a Houston hospital, died Saturday. She grew up in the town of LaFayette and graduated from Bishop Ludden High School before going on to college and medical school.

Yeah, looks like a brain bleed due to the ECMO circuit and anticoagulation. Unfortunately, major bleeding is not an insignificant problem on ECMO.

Yeah I was kind of assuming / hoping she was VV, but certainly could have needed VA and regardless risk present with both

Hearing her sister speak is so painful. I hope that at some point we will be in a place to mourn the brothers and sisters that we have lost to this. I hope that the fallout from this collective trauma won't result in more loss.
