Has anyone ever heard of occupational health?

The other day I was speaking with someone whom I met in the hospital. She is an internist one year into practice and has decided to go back and do an occupational health residency/fellowship.

Have you guys ever heard of this field?

What type of work do you do as an attending?

Can you do it, from Family or only internal?

Do you need all three years of your family residency in order to begin of can you switch in the middle.

Any links?

Thanks

We have a pretty strong Occ Med experience available in our FM program for those who desire it. Unfortunately, no one in our program cares about it. It's boring as can be.

The majority of physicians who do occupational medicine are either employed by large companies to take care of their workers (e.g., the "company doc"), or are in private practice and have contracts with large employers to take care of their workers (usually either qualification exams or Workman's Comp. issues).

One such fellowship program is described here: http://www.aafp.org/fellowships/10199.html
