Approximately 38,000 - 6,000. Check out <a href="http://www.studentdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=006798" target="_blank">this thread</a> for details.

That 38,000 number is wrong for 2001. It was 34,859 check the AAMC website to verify your results because they had a press release in November.

~35,000 people applied. However, due to problems with AMCAS, only approximately 19 people actually had their applications received by the schools. Those select few have it made in the shade; the rest of the pool just has to wait until next year when the Web application issues have been worked out.

Don't know why we have two threads going for this topic. But just to clear up some confusion:

The press release of Nov. 2 said that 34,859 people applied
this year, 2001, for entrance in 2002 . The 38,000 number is approximately correct for last year's (year 2000's) applicants for entrance in 2001. The actual number was 37,092.

I was wrong about their being 6000 fewer applications this year. I was repeating a recently posted rumor. From the above figures you can see that approximately 2000 fewer people applied this year. Darn! A 16% drop sounded so much better than 6%! :(
