Got the idea from pre-DO thread. Thought it might be something good to have here.

Here some definitions of underdawg (up to debate):
*** Must meet 1 or more of the following definitions ***
- LizzyM (= GPA * 10 + MCAT) score ≤ to 67
- MCAT ≤ 28
- Any GPA ≤ 3.5
- Average of multiple MCATs ≤ to 30
- Any MCAT subsection ≤ 7
- International applicants

EDIT: As interviews are starting to go out, we will just adding MD schools where you have been invited next to the names.

Underdawg List

I consider myself an underdog as a reapplicant.

3.9 GPA, 36 MCAT.

11 MD, 4 DO.

I'm surprised you didn't get in this past cycle. Any words of wisdom for those of us applying for the first time?

How are your ECs? I don't see how you are an underdog regardless if you are reapplying or not.

Hey guys,

Having just submitted primary, I wanted a place for us underdogs to be able to discuss.
I consider myself to be an underdog. Here are my stats:

cGPA: 3.55, sGPA: 3.72, MCAT: 31 (10,11,10), State: GA

I will be applying to 26 MD schools

Median does not equal underdog.

I'm 3.3 cgpa 3.6 sgpa 33 MCAT, Ca resident. I'm worried as hell that my cgpa (which is horrible because of my time in city college) is going to hold me back... but applied to 28 schools so we shall see. Hopefully my ECs will make up the slack. Good luck all!

Hey everyone! I would consider myself an underdog because of my MCAT score but here are my stats:
cGPA: 3.88
sGPA: 3.84
MCAT: 8PS/9VR/11BS (28)
State: GA (attended public state school)
Good luck :)

I'm applying to 25 schools

Had similar stats last cycle and got in. I think the GPA saved the MCAT.

The rest of you posters are kind of insulting to the real underdogs. But good luck to all of you! :luck:

First real underdog here, good luck! Though great GPA, I'm sure you'll get a ton of interviews :)

Thanks for sharing! Did any interviewers ever ask about your MCAT score?

Very similar stats. Good luck to you both.
Out of curiosity sbhav, what schools are you applying to (since we are both from the same state and lowish stats)?

Yes - one person out of all of my interviewers bothered to ask me directly about my MCAT score. He said "Hmm..it looks like you have an excellent GPA but you got a 28M on your MCAT. Do you think that's the best you can do? Do you have issues with standardized testing?" He was nice and we were having great conversation, he was just very thorough and very direct.

My best advice is to hold your ground - don't blame anyone/anything else for your score. Don't offer any explanation and take responsibility for your own score. That interviewer must have liked my approach because that was the school I got in to. You may face a lot of waitlists, but keep your spirits up and wow them with your EC's and interviewing skills!

3.54 cGPA/3.36 sGPA - MCAT: 33 (12 PS, 10, VR, 11 BS) UT Resident

Do you think that sGPA is going to kill my chances? My year-to-year breakdown of my sGPA is:
Freshman: 2.94
Sophomore: 3.51
Junior: 3.43
Senior: 3.49

Total underdog here. My post-bacc grades are nearly perfect, but I have an overseas degree (but not an international applicant). I would say my EC's are OK, not amazing.
Plus, I have limited geographical places I can apply to and so my school list is uncomfortably top heavy :/

Have about 15 schools to apply to, hopefully someone will bite :)

I'm still fixing my list but so far I have:

Albany Medical College
Rosalind Franklin
Creighton
Drexel
Emory (extreme reach but whatever)
GWU
Georgetown
Hofstra
Howard
Loyola
Medical College of Wisconsin
Mercer
NYMC
OHSU
Penn State
Morehouse (maybe?)
Tulane
Tufts
U of Nebraska (I have strong ties to Nebraska)
U of Illinois at Chicago
U of Alabama at Birmingham (I'm doing a research internship here now, so I'm hoping that will help me)
Temple

What about you?

seems like most underdogs so far have great GPAs but MCAT is the problem. I seem to be the opposite.

I feel like your GPA is actually pretty good. The cGPA is a little lower than average, but I think you'll get a lot of interviews. (especially considering your major. It looks like you nailed all the prerequisite courses but the engineering courses, which are usually very difficult and don't count towards the sGPA are lowering your cGPA.)

I suppose I qualify :)

uGPA: 2.67; sGPA 2.48
gGPA: 4.0 (SMP)
MCAT: 39

Applied to 20 schools, all MD. Have my secondaries pre-written and ready to go! I just need to get past the auto-screeners.

Albany Medical College
Cooper Medical School
Creighton U School of M
Drexel U C of M
Eastern Virginia MS
Emory
George Washington
Georgetown
Jefferson Medical College
MC Georgia
Medical U SC (weak state ties)
Mercer
New York Medical College
Oakland U
Rush
The Commonwealth
The U of Toledo
Tulane (ties to the state)
U of Central Florida
U of Kentucky
U of Louisville
U of Miami
U of S. Florida
U of SC - Greenville (weak state ties)
Virginia Commonwealth
West Virginia U S of M

We seem to have some overlaps but not as much as I expected. I tried to do as many sothern schools as possible (based on OOS acceptance) and stay east of the Mississippi. Just some comments about your list: Howard & Morehouse are majority African American, Loyola is a christian school.

I actually had a lot of the schools you put as maybes (which basically means I just have to do more research on them on MSAR) but thanks I'll definitely be taking those three off my list then. Cooper is the new medical school in NJ right? I think I read about that one. Your list looks pretty good to me though

Yep, Cooper is in NJ. That's actually a school I wasn't sure if I wanted to add or now. I ended up adding because its relatively new and decent OOS acceptance.

Just verified by AMCAS:
3.59 cGPA
3.47 sGPA
36 MCAT

Hoping good ECs can carry me through!

Yea, it makes me sad as well. Do you want to keep the OP updated with a list of the underdogs/their stats/etc. to use as a resource for others? See the pre-osteo underdog threads for formatting.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting automatic rejections based on the verbal score .

Are you planning on retaking?

I am not retaking .. It would take me so long to improve on my verbal that I would have to push my application o next year. I also think my science sub scores would decrease :(

True. I would try to study along side this application cycle though. Are you also applying to DO schools and would be happy going to a DO school if you dont get any love from MD?

I haven't really shadowed a specific DO and this have no letter from one. My only hope is that schools will maybe consider my situation--English is my second language (parents do not speak any English and thus grew up in a home speaking Spanish only). Also, I am economically disadvantaged, first person in my family to go to college.

Not all DO schools require DO letter. There is a list somewhere in the pre-osthio of which schools do.

Okay thanks. Haven't seen this, but it's nice of you to post. OP feel free to remove me from your list above, and I apologize if I have undermined the purpose of this thread in any way.

Median does not equal underdog.
yeah.. I was surprised to see some of the stats in this thread. to put things in perspective for people, here's some AAMC data:

for all applicants, the average science GPA is 3.44, the average overall GPA is 3.54
for all matriculants, the average science GPA is 3.63, the average overall GPA is 3.68

for all applicants, the average MCAT is 28
for all matriculants, the average MCAT is 31
