It would be nice if we all could indicate if one is an AMG , IMG w/o visa required, or IMG requiring VISA as is being done on other specialty forums.

Congrats for those who have IVs! Good Job guys!

Are there any repeat applicants here? This season sucks for me :-( Last year I had 5 IVs by this time. For this cycle none so far, even with a much better application than last time :-( anybody in the same boat??? or it's just me?

I didn't apply last year. Just one interview so far, decided to take a year to do hospitalist then apply this year. Others from my residency that I'm comparable with fared much better than me at this point last year. It seems rheum is just getting very competitive year by year. Either that or programs are just slower this year in replying.

I wouldn't give up just yet....there are still a lot of programs that have not even started giving out interviews. From browsing through the old forums it seems that invitations continue to roll out through the end of August and sometimes into September. And it only takes one interview at the right place

I'm on the same boat as well. This is my first time applying, and I haven't heard from any programs so far as well.

Hello Everyone,

Great job so far everyone. To those who're waiting for more interviews, seems like some programs haven't started sending out IV's yet so hopefully there will be some on the way soon.

Have my first interview later this week. Anyone have any advice on rheum interviews especially in terms of the difference from Residency interviews?

Thanks a lot and good luck to us all

I'm on the same boat as well. This is my first time applying, and I haven't heard from any programs so far as well.

I totally understand the feeling! My inbox has been still silent. I think at this point I would be happy to see at least some Rejection emails! LOL

I didn't apply last year. Just one interview so far, decided to take a year to do hospitalist then apply this year. Others from my residency that I'm comparable with fared much better than me at this point last year. It seems rheum is just getting very competitive year by year. Either that or programs are just slower this year in replying.

You are right, Probably this year is going to be more competitive than ever! Good Luck buddy!

I knew Rheum was getting competitive but I didn't anticipate this. I have to wonder if visa is an issue since I'm an FMG. I'm curious, do any of you who got IV need visa? Congrats on the success so far. Also when is a good time to throw in the towel and start looking at other options? Thanks.

Go through the match, but it is NEVER too early to be thinking of a plan B. I'm an AMG with no visa and several interviews and yet I already have a backup plan. Especially if you are needing a visa, decide if you are going to take a job that will allow you to waiver, a chief year, or SOAPing into a less competitive specialty. Those last 6 months of residency go by very fast!

Hopefully the interviews start coming for us soon, I'm anticipating some people will cancel and spots will open up later on. Worst case though we at least have IM to fall back on, better than applying to residency and having nothing to fall back on is how I look at it. Good luck to u though with this process!

Thanks a lot and good luck to us all
Good luck on your interview, my first one is next week. I haven't heard any rheum interview-specific advice, but my friends who are interviewing for different specialties tell me to know your CV extremely well, if you've done any research they will ask about it, and have an idea of what your career plans are. I know that's pretty general/obvious, but hope it goes well!

Good Morning everyone, lets hope that this week is a productive one for all.

Has anyone got response from Duke, Brigham or Mass Gen?

I got a message from Duke stating that they were still reviewing applications in early August but nothing since then

Only applied to 14 programs (my home program suggested only 5!)...have only received 4 invites thus far - I was thinking maybe last year's data was just a fluke but wondering if it's truly the new trend! People are avoiding primary care and wisening up to the work-life balance of rheum, while at the same time realizing it had been notoriously "easy to match into" before and thus applying to this field - for the multiple aforementinod reasons, and then some - but I do think with the influx of applicants, it's had the right (and now the resources) to become a competitive specialty. Just my 2 cents. Hoping a few more invites roll in and my odds are more favorable!!

Well said. I was reviewing the NRMP match data from 2012-2016. Rheum has 1.4 applicant per matched spot. This is higher than "more competitive fellowships " like pulm/crit care and heme/onc. Also some rheum programs have 1-2 spots per year which suggest that fewer candidates are considered for interview.

I think that this suggests that rheum is being more competitive.

I think that this suggests that rheum is being more competitive.

For whatever reason rheum has been unpopular for many years. I find this puzzling because we get to use some of the coolest/most advanced treatments, and for many conditions we treat (RA chief among them) we can achieve remission that was impossible even 15 or 20 years ago.

And I would argue that although the pay is not as great, the lifestyle otherwise rivals any specialty you care to name--derm, A/I, ophtho, whatever. I go to the hospital maybe once a month. I was on call this weekend and got exactly 2 phone calls, which were both handled in 5 minutes. I am home at 6pm every day (and 2pm on Fridays). I *never* get called in the middle of the night

Maybe the word is finally getting out......

Haven't heard from any of those three (besides the Duke notice you got also), but on ERAS Brigham says they'll send out invites at the end of August, so maybe this week? Fingers crossed for us all!

Guess Rheum still has reputation of managing patients with chronic pain and that the only medication available is steroids.
Even my IM colleagues and family who are physicians seems to have no idea of all the changes in Rheum over the past 10-15 years. Guess it's there loss...

the biggest turnaway for me against rheum was fibromyalgia. It was literally flooding the clinics. so much that u have crying patients who dont accept NO OPIOID policy

In academics you can fairly effectively screen out all the fibro. It's kind of hard to do in practice--particularly when first starting out--but once you're established you could essentially decline to see new patients who don't meet certain referral criteria (i.e., abnormal lab findings, abnormal imaging, etc). Or you could simply confirm the diagnosis of FM, do some studies to rule out other stuff as indicated, make a set of treatment recommendations (exercise, lose weight, treat depression, no opioids) and dismiss the patient with no further need for rheum follow-up. Many people in busy community practices take this approach

In the medicine world, joke is that only rheumatologist recognize FM as a disease. It's a true disease with not much treatment options. Turning down referrals won't be a good option for long term private practice. But should say management of true joint diseases is very very interesting and specialized and that's the niche segment which every rheumatologist dreams to practice

Forgot to mention: second most common reason for referral to rheum:

Positive ANA in a normal healthy person.

Good luck guys! Wishing you all a great interview season! I hope slow and steady win the race!
Surely feels like the interviews are great feat, imagine if you are selected out of 100 and you are the 30 chosen for a 3 spot place. wow, puts things in perspective....
