I’m on a J1 and I have only two interviews so far. Is it time to consider other options? Any other J1 candidates have any thoughts on this ?
Thats great going!!...I got 2 so far...Can I talk to you over phone/skype to discuss some h1b issues?I need H1B visa. Trying to stay positive despite the silence. 4 interviews so far...
Does anyone know the interview dates for Tufts? Didn't see any in their invite or ERAS, and haven't heard back from their coordinator yet. Maybe I should just be more patient.

Based on the interviews so far (or lack thereof), it seems like programs screening criteria go: Scores>Residency Program>Visa Status. Damn Step 1 score is going to haunt me for life.
The step 1 screen is real — I’m fairly certain was screened out directly at a few programs just based on numbers. It’s really annoying that a test I took 5 years ago is still a huge part of the application, but it is what it is.
Step 1 score and 2 and 3 are used as filtering measures to narrow applicants.

It's been a rough month. I am an IMG with a green card. My steps are 236/221/Pass/234. Residency from a community program. Some research with publications. I believe that my LORs are good. Applied to > 90 programs (I didn't apply to most of the top ones). So far I have zero interviews (one rejection). I want to put the blame on my step 2 score or maybe my residency program, or maybe both, not sure. But it seems that there is a certain filter that I just can't get through. They say is still early in the season though but the anxiety is starting to kick in. At what point should we start emailing programs? If we're interested in certain programs but haven't heard back yet, is it too early to send an email?
Pretty demoralized right now as a long-time lurker I feel the need to post.

Step1-230s
Step2-240s
Step3-210s (can't imagine anyone cares about this test, maybe I should've taken it seriously)
University Affiliated program who has placed multiple people in heme/onc in the past.
4 LORs (1 PD, 1 IM who knows me well, 1 heme/onc who knows me very well and 1 Ph.D for research)
Have extensive bench research hours and skills throughout residency at a research institute within the oncology field (without any publications due to the fact that I'm participating in funded research that has not been able to be published due to lack of positive data over the last 2 years), some in house poster presentations but no major conferences.
I have 0 interviews so far. 0. I feel so angry because while my friends were spending time hanging out on Friday and Saturday nights I was in the lab working my butt off. Now it seems like I shouldn't have done any of this an just published useless case reports to get something published.
I know interviews seem to have been given out till about the last week in September so I still have some hope but I have actually started looking for hospitalist jobs.
The question is, if it really is my step scores that are filtering me out, how is there any way for me to improve my application? Would it be to publish some of the research if that becomes possible? Does a year of hospitalist work improve an application and if it does, are there specific hospitalist gigs (university program vs community/private vs faculty) that are more beneficial than others?
Sorry for the long winded message, I just feel like the last 2.5 years of my hard work just thrown away.

That sucks, I'm sorry. I don't feel like you're being filtered out with scores though. I definitely feel you in terms of the research aspect, as I tried to compensate for my low scores with tons of research in residency but after a certain point I'm not sure if it makes any difference if an external filter is causing me to be filtered out before the research is even considered. Given the overall trend on SDN, I think we are coming up to about halfway, so probably wait until at least Sept 1 to make any alternative plans. People should start cancelling interviews soon due to scheduling conflict and there might be movement at many programs.
Guys a little deviation please, does an away elective contribute to chances of getting an interview?
I mean while you're in Residency. Thanks for your inputAre you talking about an away elective during residency or medical school? It would only help if you were able to get a faculty member to write a LOR for you or vouch for you directly to the program director.
I am on J1 and I have only 1 interview so far. How rational is it to wait for the second wave of interviews and remain hopeful?I’m on a J1 and I have only two interviews so far. Is it time to consider other options? Any other J1 candidates have any thoughts on this ?
I am in the same boat! J1 and two interviews. I feel like it has come to a complete stop. No rejections or interviews. Not sure how positive I should remain. Sorry that is has been a rough season. Hopefully there are some interviews in the next week and a half.
My situation is even worse than you guys. Who still has no interview so far? IMG plus community program. US citizen. Chief resident. Advance degree from a top research university (ranking top 5 in my major). Oncology research in a top university with poster, publications (all first-author). Strong LORs from well-known oncologists in the field. Several Non-oncology publication, poster presentations and book chapter. Steps 230/240. Didn’t do well on step 3 210+. Not sure if it’s step 3 or it’s IMG+community+step3. Feel like I’m the worst applicant this season.
Amazing man --- somebody with stellar CV like yours not getting interviews...Also as Copperdopper was saying scary to know what else can be done to improve CV.There must be a pattern of how programs are screening applicants....Certainly scores are not a barrier for you.My situation is even worse than you guys. I just want to say thank you to everyone for posting honestly about the struggles of application season. I've gotten two interviews thus far so it could be worse, but I'm certainly not where I thought I would be. I've always thought of SDN as the place where only the best people post about their best experiences, but it helps to know I'm not alone in doubting my application. IT IS STILL EARLY--I know this--but it's also hard to work your ass off for so many years and feel like it's not paying off.
I do think this will turn around for many of us (as others have mentioned that we are still only halfway, several programs haven't sent interviews, and there will always be cancellations!), but know that if you've been 'keeping it real' about your struggle and self-doubt, you have helped me feel less alone on those rejection-filled days. Good luck everyone!
