Official 2019-2020 GI Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
USF very strong. Lots of procedures and you will see and learn all you have to in order to be a competent and compassionate gastroenterologist. Liver disease and IBD might be an issue since some months they don’t have clinics set up right. So ask about IBD and Liver exposure.

In general the best is UofF Jacksonville. Then Mayo (Florida) the rest are all even.

But make sure to ask about he advance procedure exposure also if this is something you should be able to at least observe and if you can get certified in by the program/ fellowship director if they allow it or have enough cases for you to perform.

I usually don’t disagree with you but this is completely inaccurate.

The order is as follows

UF>USF>Miami>>Mayo Jax >>>>> UF Jacksonville > and then the small community HCA programs in any order.

I am very familiar with all of the SE programs particularly Florida and can assure you that you are mistaken. UF Jax doesn’t even make it into the Big 3 of the state.

Is anybody able to switch interview dates for Dallas Methodist? I am currently September 27, seeking October 18 or October 25. Please private message me, thanks!

I also agree that you are correct in this matter. I was simply comparing what I thought. But your insight in this is More

I am also a little bias towards more liking of UF Jax since and Mayo due to their motility specialist which I am closely in contact with.

But your review is correct.

If anyone is thinking about declining, especially with obviously coinciding dates, please do so as soon as possible. Many of us are still hanging nervously on very few invites. You may be helping a lot with an early decline. Thank you.

Yes. Please do cancel in time if you truly can not make it to the interview

That may be the "name pedigree"... But I believe it can't be one size fits all... All programs have strengths and limitations... UTSW is awesome for basic science and liver.... a person interested in motility might however be suited elsewhere.... I think it would be much more helpful if attendings and fellows on the forum discussed strengths and limitations of programs rather than come up with ROLs ... It would prevent pre-conceived notions about rank and pedigree from developing which have plagued the system....

So regarding USC being on "probation" does anyone know what that actually means (or even if it even applies to GI)? Not taking new fellows? Or only internals? I can't imagine the whole thing's just been disbanded.

Does not really mean anything...just tokenism... it's a great program otherwise...

Hello, anybody willing to switch Henry Ford 09/27 with any other date?.

Does Mississippi have any other date other than 27th September?

I would be willing to give a $100 gift card if someone is ready t switch their 4th of October interview at University of Mississippi with 27th of September. Please let me know.

Thank You

Does Mississippi have any other date other than 27th September?

Mississippi is interviewing hard for attending physicians for IBD, Advance and motility I believe as of now. So the dates you get that seem kind of weird specially since they interviewing for faculties in oct-nov

But the chief/PD is extremely nice individual. She help put the program to standards of other programs and still doing her best to make the program stronger each year.

Is it safe to assume now that the match is over?

I guess again the waiting game now and time to go back to work in order recover for the financial eras investments. Hahaha

I’m also assuming the IMGS on the forums are not active or just didn’t get any interviews after the DO/MD merge hahaha

Not funny. But DO/ MD merge did hurt many IMGs this year.

I would assume the MD/DO merge hurt DOs as well. I know a DO with only 3 IVs at this stage.

You should see CV of IMGs who applied and got under 5 IVs. Much more stellar than AMGs with not a single abstract but matching in a big name Gi fellowship coz they did residency in a big program. In an unbiased world where everyone got selected based on CV and scores, IMGs ll match 70% and AMGs 20%(exact opposite of current match rates)

Motility has to be MUSC

For motility any of these programs are the best :

  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA
  • Medical College of Georgia, Georgia Health Sciences University, Augusta, GA
  • Medical College of Wisconsin (Adult) and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (Pediatrics), Milwaukee, WI
  • Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA
  • Temple University, Philadelphia, PA
  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, El Paso, TX
  • University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
  • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC
  • Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Salem, NC
  • Washington University, St. Louis, MO
UF Jacksonville will soon be added to this list also.

Something else to think about is the quality of interviews rather than quantity. Quality being subjective to the applicant of course. How many people are really matching below their eight ranked? I doubt many. Going on 10+ interviews is reasonable if 1) you're not sure where you want to end up 2) applying to highly competitive programs in general or 3) you want a sense of security.

oh yeah. I know IMGs with 18 IVs

I love people when I meet someone with 15+ Interviewing at low tier programs. They improve the chances other applicants by decreasing competition since they can only match at 1 out of the 15 programs.

What about Northwestern? Not that I am interviewing there! lol but I though they had strong motility.

I d be careful at declaring places low tier... While there are handful of prgrams that might have issues , on the whole most places are very solid with each having own strengths and weaknesses . There are "top tier" brands with entire sub specialties of GI missing and some community programs that provide a well rounded education...
