MA vs MS doesn't matter, especially if your end goal is an MD or DO. You actually do take classes with med students in the BU program. (Other programs that do this include U of Ohio, U of Cinncinati, Eastern Virg. Medical College) At BU students have a choice to do a library or laboratory thesis. Doing the laboratory thesis takes an extra year. From what I've heard, a large proportion of the students take two years to do the BU SMP.
So, here are the reasons why I chose the Gtown SMP.
1. 1 year program. BU is 2 years this also means 2 years of tuition! $$$ (for most students) as is Drexel (if you want the masters)
2. Oldest, most known, most respected SMP program.
3. The curriculum kicks ass. It actually looks like what a first year medical school curriculum looks like (minus gross anatomy). Plus, the modified block schedule seems appealing to me.
4. You get an MS (as I said before, even though this doesn't really matter for someone going for an MD, I still liked the idea of getting an actual MS in Physiology as opposed to something abstract like an MA in "medical sciences")
5. It's Georgetown
6. Washington DC
7. My interactions with the people that run the SMP program. Nothing but positive and helpful. If you're still waiting to hear back from them, be patient. From what I heard, they received well over 1,000 applications this year for the 140 spots. I think that's way more than they have ever received before, so be patient.
8. It's Georgetown
Again, if anyone has any questions or whatever please feel free to message me.
I second all of the above.
