Since Penn seems to have its own thread running about, I thought we might as well do the same for Hopkins.

Did anybody else get the registration materials yet? Are all of you doing the Big Sib program? It seems like its optional, but then again it states that "all first year students will be assigned to a 2nd year"

Did any of you buy that biochem textbook they recommended for the pre-class readings and problem sets?

I've started a lab rotation here (during the summer) for the MD/PhD program so I might be able to answer some questions about the area if you havent moved to Baltimore yet. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that parking in the satellite parking lots (about 1 mile away from the campus, shuttle runs every 20 mins) is free. They still have spots open right now but I dont know if they will fill up or not by the time med school classes start.

I really dont want to try and drag up all my vaccination info for that health form, but oh well.

Are any of you going to that orientation weekend?

I'll be deciding by next week whether I'll be coming to Johns Hopkins.
It is so funny that we have to read 170 pages already :) Good old hopkins

Hey Hopkins,
isn't the lil sib survey hilarious? i would love to meet the person who prepared the MCQs

ACK!!! Everything was fun...filling out the registration materials until I got to the blasted packet of biochemisty concepts and problem sets! I can't believe they're expecting us to do homework!!!!!

anyways, on another note, i'm doing the sib thing because I figure I'll get some old exams and textbooks that way. I'm also doing the orientation thingy--it sounds like fun and a way to meet new people in our class!

hope to see ya'll there!

oh, btw...

I bought the stryer/berg text today...I know it sells for about $80-$90...but i got it under $50 in Korea. The sad thing is, I have to lug it back to the states!

yeah i love that one question on the big sib survey:

What do you want from your big sib?
a) old tests
b) old books
c) home cooking
d) sexual healing
e) engagement ring

I think the first block is Molecules and Cells or something like that. I definitely need to brush up on my bio/biochem stuff. It seems like I can hardly remember any of it now.

Where in Baltimore are you guys going to be living?

Do you guys remember the sign up sheet for the Practice of Clinical Medicine course (i think its the one where they assign you a doctor to work with in the community)?

Anyways, it asks if you have a particular preference to work with any specialty. At first I thought I'd like to work with somebody like a cardiac electrophysiologist (cardiologist with a fellowship) but then I thought that someone like that might be too super specialized for this course. What are your thoughts on this? Is it wiser just to work with someone from a primary care specialty like internal med? I'm thinking that someone like that might make it a little easier to get some patient interaction experience.

i had a question. i'm thinking about coming to hopkins next year. i thought i'd read on some post that they're switching to a pass/fail format. is this going to be in effect for next year's class?

Yikes!

My mom called and told me that I got a huge envelope from Hopkins.... I didn't know it had HOMEWORK in it. So much for rest and relaxation, eh? I'm gonna procrastinate on that one and head to Huntington Beach!

I'm doing the big sib thing, and orientation (looking forward to seeing all of you there!)

Does anyone know if/when Hopkins has a white coat ceremony?

Is anyone else going to live in Reed with me?

I guess I should make a pit stop at my house and get started on all of the paperwork :p

liberty,

they're not moving to a purely pass/fail that I'm aware of. However, Hopkins is moving this year to a high honors/honors/pass/fail (which is basically the same as A, B, C, etc)

I dont remember seeing anything about a white coat ceremony. I looked on their website and didnt see anything about it either, so I guess they dont have one.

hey all,

i'm psyched for the orientation thing and my big sib, i feel like a pre-frosh all over again! :D

as for the homework, i'm sad. however, i have the 4th edition of stryer, so i'm thinking of not purchasing the 5th edition (i don't think they're all kinds of different...)

take care!

Hey y'all -

Glad to hear everyone's so excited about Hopkins.

Grading is changing to Honors/HP/Pass for ALL students for all four years, effective immediately.

The white coat ceremony is held in late spring, usually around Memorial Day.

Cheers -
doepug (MS III)

btw... don't sweat over the problem sets.

(I meant to post this earlier, but my connection got lost, so some of this might be redundant)

Yay! We are moving right along on this thread!

Jessica- I'm living in Reed!!! People thought that I was crazy for agreeing to live there especially after having lived in Baltimore for the past four years. But I think it's more convenient to stay there. I'm in a suite-style room with three other girls. I got to check it out the other day...it's not bad...aside from the 50-year-old furniture. Are you in a single or a suite?

By the way...rumor has it that reed can be quite the pressure-cooker...I mean, people not only revert to their freshman year habits, but they get ultra-competitive. this kind of worries me. But Jessica, we have to agree to something (I made this same pact with another Reed-er)...I say we try our hardest not to foster that kind of cutthroat atmosphere while we stay in Reed! Let's make it a friendly, helpful environment, yes??

As far as the white coat ceremony is concerned, Hopkins' white coat ceremony is in late May--memorial day weekend...at least last year it was...so I'm pretty sure it will be this year as well. Basically, we're supposed to pass our classes until May to be able to get them! =)

Also, with the honors/pass/fail curriculum...it's true that it's basically A,B,C...but there's no GPA!!!

I actually checked out our class list and I could find most of your names there--except for Hopkins 2010--that was a little hard to figure out. It looks like we have a pretty diverse class! I'm sooo looking forward to meeting all of ya'll!

Hopkins 2010,

as for the clinical class...I wrote down otolaryngology or neurology because I followed around the ENT team before and I was really really interested in it. But then, I did research in a neurology lab and went around the neuro clinic too...so I tentatively wrote those...but I hope this doesn't limit my options.

Hey All-

I agree with the hilarious-ness of the big sib survey...I was cracking up filling it out. And the fact that we have summer homework makes me laugh a little, too. I'm living in a one-bedroom apartment in Mt. Vernon, 1200 block of N. Charles street, seems like a nice area but I was kind of rushed when I finally found the place :) I'm going to the orientation weekend; I think it's also quite funny how the checklist for the orientation weekend listed DEODORANT as one of the absolute musts as a separate item instead of lumping it with toiletries. Guess they really want to make sure none of us offend our fellow classmates :D

I'm so excited to meet all of y'all that I haven't met yet and can't wait to see everyone that I know already. Only six more weeks of work for me and I'll be in Baltimore on August 17, yippee!

Oh, about the clinical form...I have worked in GI for the past year and can't decide if I want to continue with GI since I'll be more able to understand what's going on, or if I want to stay away from GI and learn something new. So, basically I put no preference and will just be happy with whatever I get :)

nylee,

In case you havent figured out who I am yet, I'm the only guy from Oklahoma on the list (that I'm aware of)

The summer homework is an annual hazing ritual courtesy of the 2nd year class.

My revisit host told me not to waste my time on it.

Hope this helps everyone enjoy their last summer a little bit more.

Hey I'll be staying in Reed Hall too. In one of those 4-person suites. I hope I get a parking space.

Anyway, look forward to meeting you all at the retreat. Ye ye ye, HOPKINS RULES!

c'mon guys! Let's keep this thread rolling! we have far to go before we can catch up to Penn's thread. haha...just kidding...there's no competition. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

hey doepug,

i heard a rumor that the entering students have to read their AMCAS personal statements to the rest of the first-year class (or something like that)

Is that just a false rumor or what?

NOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope that's just a rumor, Hopkins 2010. I think people would get an awful first impression of me, if we really had to read those dreadful things.

<img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />  <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" />

What?!

Don't worry, you won't read your AMCAS personal statement in front of anyone, unless you feel moved to do so. :) Judging from what I know of my classmates, there'd be protests and letters to the administration if such a practice existed. Some of the classes ('03 in particular) are noted for their pranks, though they're pretty benign.

Hopkins is indeed steeped in tradition, but I assure you that any humiliation you undergo as a medical student will be exclusively self-induced.

Cheers,
doepug ('04)

Thank goodness doepug cleared that up! :)

Keep posting, guys! This is good!

 •••••Yay! I am glad to hear that I won't be the only one living in Reed. I am in the suites too, on the 9th floor I think.

I am all for fostering a laid back environment... I am waaaay to prone to getting an ulcer to be living with a bunch of uptight ultra-competitive people.

Are anyone else's problem set info pages cut off on the tops... all of mine are missing the first few lines of print. What gives??

Is anyone else shipping their car? I was thinking about having mine shipped from Cali to Baltimore... and I know that the shipping companies give a discount if you ship more than one at a time... so if anyone else from So Cal wants to ship their car to the Baltimore area too, PM me and maybe we can both save some $$.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Sooo.... since I was a biochem major... do you think I can skip out on buying the book that they recommend we read chapters 1-6 of?

I don't want to get "behind" the rest of the class (the of our classmates is pretty impressive... it makes me a little queasy in fact...) but I don't want to shell out any $$ if I don't absolutely have to. I used Voet, Voet & Pratt for my biochem classes... do you think I will be safe if I just look over that?

Hey Jessica~
So I heard from Doepug that you can use your old biochem book if you want to. He said it wasn't necessary to buy the stryer/berg edition (because I used Voet for undergrad, as well). But I bought it anyway from Korea because it was less than $50 here. Since you were a biochem major, you should be all over the biochem section...I doubt you'll need extra reinforcement! :)

My problem sets look ok...which means I have more problems to solve. &gt; :(

I don't know of anyone else from cali that's bringing their car except for LizardKing...but he's driving it over cross country! Wow...mad props to Lizard. I also have a car here too, but I'm from the Baltimore area. Sorry...if I find anyone, i'll let you know! My college roommate (from Laguna Hills,CA) might be shipping her car this summer...I'll keep you posted, ok?

Hey...I'm living on the 10th floor of Reed! Let's totally chill and form study groups! I think I know someone that might be in your suite. Her name is Liana..I talked to her on the phone...she's a really cool gal!

When are all of you guys moving in? Are ya'll coming to orientation? I'm getting way too psyched about this year! Let's make it a really COOPERATIVE, COOOOOOL class, yeah? I heard the year right above us is mega-ultra-super competitive... hopefully the competitive streak skips our class!

As for making our class a more cooperative one, I'm all for it. I have a feeling our class will get along well, based on the people I've met and talked to so far.

Btw, what are you guys up to this summer? I'm pretty much chillin', surfing, staying away from books...basically doing absolutely nothing!

yo, I totally second the "absolutely nothing," LizardKing. I am going to MILK this summer for all it's worth. Seriously, it may be our last free summer until....................... RETIREMENT??!!??!!? hahaha... <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

uhh... i hope not! <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> I'm sure we'll have breaks in the future, but it's like summer after senior year in high school--no real way to prepare for the next step--and no real motivation to, either.

I say the best thing is to CHILLLL.. ..cuz I know of people that went to med school right after graduating from college (probably like many of us) and came very close to burning out--much earlier than those that took a hiatus in between. THIS IS OUR HIATUS TIME! LET'S USE IT!!!

Jessica, my packet-o-biochem had the tops cut off, too. Unfortunately the actual problems in the back are complete, it's just the explaination pages in the front that are missing the first inch or so :)

I second (or third, or fourth as the case may be) the motion of fostering a chill, non-competative environment...everything is just so much more pleasant that way! Even though I'm not living in Reed I want to be a part of study groups, chill-out groups, whatever else there is going on in Reed...and I hereby offer my living room couch for anyone who may need an escape from the confines of that place :) I'll try to find something comfy. Though I'm sure you all will love it...I'm a little concerned about not becomming as tight with y'all since I won't be as close in proximity, but I think all will work out well - we do have to spend every morning/early afternoon together for the next 10 months, after all!

Jessica, shipping a car? Why not just drive? Cross country trips are so fun, even by yourself! There's nothing better than camping out in the middle of nowhere, watching the Nothern Lights, listening to the animals...Love It! If you drive pretty much all day and just stop to sleep, you can make it in 4 days or so, huh?

nylee, I'm SO sorry I didn't get in touch with you when I was in town last week. It was a crazy stressful trip, I ended up not finding my apartment until an hour and a half before my flight was scheduled to leave...grrr. And I was there for 5 days! But I still have your contact info, I'll call when I get to town in mid-August and we can hang out then. When are you able to move into your rooms in Reed?

As for the Biochem book, the cheapest I could find was on-line...some service of eBay, it was $95. And if you type in FREEFIVE in the coupon section that comes up you get $5 off. I went through all this and decided it wasn't worth $90 to buy the book, chapters 1-6 are all basic biochem type stuff (if you search for the book and go to the publishers website, you can see the table of contents). I feel pretty confident that I know this stuff, so I'll pass on the book. I, in fact, don't have any Biochem books...I didn't feel like spending the $$ in undergrad for such a heinous subject :) , so I borrowed the book from a friend and gladly returned it after the semester. Anyway, they have the book in the library here, if I get really bored sometime this month I may borrow it for a little "light" reading, just to make sure I'm good to go.

I took 3 years off from Undergrad, so I'm actually raring to start school, I'm what you might call the opposite of burned out with school. I absolutely can't wait to start again. I definately agree that y'all who are going straight through should do as little as possible this summer.

What was that adopt a family thing in our packet? Does that go out from the alumni association to all students? It seemed like an undergrad type thing to me and I ignored it, I'm wondering what everyone else's thoughts are?

I find this very interesting. There was an earlier post that the biochem problem set is just a hazing ritual. However, everybody seems to have ignored that message. Is it because the hazing ritual thing was concocted or that you guys just like to torture yourselves with work? I guess this is where the sheep are separated from the goats. I believe that whether or not the problems had been assigned you guys will still want to get your feet wet b4 school. I'm truly impressed. Cheers,

I agree that it is interesting, quake. I guess I haven't decided what to make of the hazing ritual post, so I ignored it. Which is not to say that I'm planning on actually doing the porblem sets...I highly doubt that I will get in "trouble" if I don't turn them in on the first day and get my shiny gold star. But I do have a urge to "get my feet wet", and since it was included I don't see the harm in looking it over and making sure I'm up to speed, especially since I've been out for so long. Again, only if I get REALLY bored will I actually get that book, but, I figure, what the hell :) Whatever, I'm a nerd and I'm okay with that :D

Nine,

I just ignored the adoptive family thing. I'm also a little bit worried about not feeling as involved with the class as others. I'm living way out in west Baltimore and married also.

i love study groups so i hope our class has lots of people who like to use them too.

I think theres some kind of heat wave up here. Its supposed to get close to 100 degrees here today. I thought I left all that behind when I left Texas but oh well.

Hopkins 2010, were you at the second look weekend? I don't think I met you if you were, I remember hearing about a MD/PhD student who used to be a fighter pilot...is that you? :)

Everywhere is so hot lately...it's over 100 here in Michigan - bleh! It's been hot for a long while in Baltimore, though...I was walking around last week sweating like a mad-woman! I kept taking breaks in the shade around the monument in Mt. Vernon - such a pretty place!

At least if it's this hot in September we won't really know...we won't even be able to tell if it's sunny outside as we're cooped up in our dark, windowless lecture hall :) Whoo hoo!

No not me :) I think there's 13 MD/PhD people coming in this year total, and I didnt hear of any fighter pilots in the group, but then again I havent met all of them yet either (I think there were like 6 or 7 of us at the 2nd look).

I did come to the 2nd look weekend but didnt go to the baseball game/aquarium visit. They had a kinda separate MD/PhD schedule from the regular 2nd look weekend, so we didnt get to interact much with the regular MD people (mostly due to meeting with PIs/researchers we were interested in working with). We did go to that lunch and informal talk session, but we kinda all sat together at the front table behind the speaker podium and missed out on meeting some of the other folks. Some of us are emailing back and forth a little (there's 3 of us in Baltimore right now that I know of) but I dont want to be isolated from the rest of the class.

Hey All,
I just got accepted to Hopkins! A couple hours ago I received the happy phone call from Dean White, confirming that the waitlist is still moving. I have a week to decide.

It will be a tough decision for me though (between Hopkins and UCLA). But there is a good chance I'll be in school with you all next month. When is orientation/first day of school?

wow, waitlists are not done yet

Hey Caliboy, Congrats! I know you were waiting...what happy news!

Orientation starts on the 29th (Thursday) and classes start on Sept 3, day after Labor Day (and 5 days before my birthday...everyone please take note now :) )

   :D

YAY for Caliboy!!!! Pick Hopkins :D

Congrats Caliboy!

I hope you'll come join us at Hopkins next year. You'd love it. The admissions committee would never have taken you if you wouldn't be a good match.

If you have any questions about Hopkins, feel free to e-mail me at <a href="mailto:hungover:[email protected]" target="_blank">[email protected]</a>.

Cheers,

hi all,

i have nothing to contribute except for adding in some hopkins love... i think its going to be really funny during orientation when we identify each other as screennames...! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> of course, as nine-sixteen knows, my real name *seems* fake enough to use as a screen name

congratulations, caliboy! i'm psyched for you, and best of luck with your decision...!

as for the problem sets... i need motivation to start them someday, as for right now, i am completely lazing away the summer... :)

when are all of y'all moving out to baltimore? i'll be there from the beginning of august... setting up my apt...!

take care,
swaroop

you guys got homework packets already? <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

yes, i know i am not a hopkins 2006er but i just popped in to see what you geniuses talk about. congratulations to all of you.

Just wanted to post on the new forums. Hi classmates! Less than two months now :)

Wow, this new system is all futuristic looking and such...

Anyway, anyone else living in Reed, East wing, room 10A? I should have three roommates, if I counted correctly...

In case any of you actually DO want to buy the biochem book, I found it on bn.com for 80-something dollars. Not too bad. And if you log in through spree.com and use a studentadvantage number, you can save a little more too.

Also, does anyone know when we need to send in the meningococcal vaccination form by?

Take care all. :)

P.S. 7-11 is giving out free slurpees today. (Can anyone guess why? ;) )

Hey Incendiary!

No...I'm not one of your roommates :) but I will be one of your neighbors! I'm living in 10-D East Wing of Reed! I look forward to meeting you soon!

nylee

Hey peeps,

when's the earliest we can move into Reed? Is it the 24th? cuz that's when my lease starts....how bout you guys?

nylee

Do we have to bring the actual verification of vaccinations? I filled out the form asking about dates, but I dont remember it telling us to bring the stuff with us. Could be wrong though....

Hi gradient Echo!

Welcome to SDN and welcome to the JHU thread! So happy to find yet another classmate! Are you already in Baltimore doing lab rotations?

All I have is a form that I filled out before my Freshman year of college with the dates of my vaccinations that was signed by my family doc - back in 1995! I don't know if we need to bring something like that, which in my opinion is not very "official" anyway, or if filling out the dates on the Health Service form will be enough for them. I guess they can always check titers if they don't believe us, right? :)
