Hello, I have verbally committed to a program at my home school but I also received an interview invite to Harvard recently. To confirm, I ethically cannot attend the Harvard interview correct? I feel sad for turning their invite down, but I also don’t know much about their program to risk burning bridges. Realistically how does someone attend and accept the Harvard interview/offer since they tend to be later? I had 7 interviews before then so do people typically turn the previous ones down just to gamble it all for them and put their eggs in one basket?
Not worth it

1. As stated, not worth it,
2. Odds of acceptance at another interview are low anyway
3. Harvard is three years and expensive tuition and cost of living….

Congrats on an acceptance!

It is so much time, effort, and money to only be crushed when not chosen. All the interview prep does is train you into what they want you to say, not who you really are. If they really want the best, should it really be about your interview skills, or who you know that gets you there, but it should be about heart, dedication, and true caring of one’s patients.
It is a very frustrating and unpredictable process for sure. However, past a certain high threshold they are not looking for “the best”, they are looking for “best fit”. For most programs 2-5 residents and 2-5 faculty are going to spend a lot of time together and a 3.7 GPA candidate that’s fun to spend time with is better than a 4.0 GPA that doesn’t click with the director. As I’ve said in prior years, after the initial screening it’s more subjective, like dating. You do want to find the program that likes the real you. That can take a few cycles and still a lot of luck involved.

I completely agree. This was my first and thankfully last cycle. It felt like speed dating when I interviewed at different programs.

I will second this! Absolutely. This whole process is so grueling because it literally is luck. You have to jump through the baseline hurdles and then some to stand out BUT THEN you go to interview to realize it’s about the right “fit.” Even the best stats and lovely personality will not get you into a specific program. We will never know what the interview panel will want that year. The personality also has to mesh with the other potential residents’ personalities. It’s like choosing the optimum soccer team, and they are not gonna choose 4 excellent goalies. And this seems like the process for the “fair” programs. Some programs might just select you because you grew up in the same city as their spouse whom they love dearly. Yes, that has also happened lol.

I agree as well. I graduated the bottom half of the class and I'm sure most (if not all) of the other candidates had stronger GPAs than I did. Fortunately, I bonded very well with all the residents and faculty that I interviewed with. If it wasn't for the interview, I probably would not have been selected. Once you make the cut to come in for the interview, it's mostly a personality fit.

After having been a witness to cycles since 2018, I am still baffled as to how one candidate will get 7-9 interviews (that cannot be luck) and others with incredible profiles will get 1 or none. Applicants who don't even have a DDS yet will be interviewing at multiple schools and others with 3-5 years of experience will get nothing. The whole thing makes absolutely no sense to me any more.

I got 2 interview invites after I accepted into my number 1 program. I've already declined the other 2 interviews. But how do I WITHDRAWN my applications from the other remaining program? Please help. Do i go to ADEA PASS or do I have to email individual 10 schools remaining?

Hi congratulations on your acceptance! I was hoping to get some more information about your interview as far as what you felt you did successfully when answering questions and interacting with faculty and residents as well as any advice you have with interview questions.

What kind of background work did you do before arriving to the interview to understands the strengths and weaknesses of the program and learn more about it overall?

Is there anything you saw other interviewees do that seem off putting and maybe hurt their chances?

When receiving an acceptance how much time do you typically have to respond yes for no? For example if you get an acceptance at one school but then have another interview at another school that is higher on your preference and would like to still interview there.

For the interviews, the best advice I got is to be relaxed. When you are at ease, you can have a conversation style interview with the panel… they want to like you. They are mainly checking to see if you are a “normal” person who actually has a passion for the field. But to be honest, even then, it is competitive because the candidates are highly accomplished.

You can do research about a program based off of what cases and research topics the residents are working on. You have a general feeling to see if you might be a fit or not — but I was actually surprised that the school I thought I would fit in more with, I didn’t! The other school I ended up being accepted at hit all the marks, and felt like the right place, even though I didn’t feel it before the interview. You really have to step foot in person to know how you rank up.

Everyone is pretty nice, and I wouldn’t say anyone did anything particularly off putting. I will say that I had meaningful conversations with the candidates who ended up being selected, too. We clicked some way.

It depends on the program when they want your answer to an acceptance. At minimum it is usually 24 hrs. Some directors will let you go to your next interview depending on how far out it is. Anticipate your next move, whatever you do.

Best wishes for those interviewing this week! Our only hope is that we end up where we fit in best.

That’s a lot of direct emails to send, I would not reach out to withdraw your application. You can wait until they give you a possible interview and quickly decline. Likely they will just move down their list and fill the spot.

This is spot on. Exactly the same for me.

It’s arrogance like you that has to brag that really don’t make this process easy. Being humble is a good trait.

They are also being vulnerable by sharing - it took them 7 interviews before being accepted to 1. Their post is informative to other candidates because it shows how tough it is to get into a program. Their question is valid because acceptances are sent out around this time and this knowledge might be helpful to other applicants who need to turn down other interviews. As you can see, the most recent posts are also about this same topic. This years forum seems the quietest in a while, and it doesn't help when people are discouraging others from posting.

any one applying have kids? wonder if that ever comes up in interviews.
A good number of candidates had kids. Lots of residents had kids. I haven’t heard of the panel asking if I had kids or planned to have kids during residency. I think a good program understands the importance of family.

Anyone know more about USC invites? Are they going to have more interview dates?

This is my second time applying and I got one interview last year. I decided to cast a wide net this year and applied to 30 programs. No interviews or anything. Throwing to towel in and am settled with the realization that I’ll never be good enough. Good luck to everyone else on your journey 🙏

It is ultimately your decision… but I’ve seen candidates applying up to 3-5x! Some of those accepted this year have been dentists for 10+ years. People can definitely play the long game, for sure.

For those applying next year and need a second person to view their application… DM me! I spent a long time doing primary and secondary research to try to “crack the code.” Plenty of good info on SDN, besides the drama, lol.

Can anyone tell me more about SIU? I know it’s a newer program, but I’m having a hard time finding more info

I also tried to inquire about it, but not much info at all… that’s the nature of being a new program. If you want to be an endodontist and will go anywhere — apply. If you want to know about your program before you get in, ask the current residents.

This is my second time applying and I got one interview last year. I decided to cast a wide net this year and applied to 30 programs. No interviews or anything. Throwing to towel in and am settled with the realization that I’ll never be good enough. Good luck to everyone else on your journey 🙏
did you have everything in by the first week of the app opening? thats so tough to hear sorry 🙁

Logistics Question for Interviews

When you interview do you fly out the same night? Or should you try to fly out the next day? Interview starts at 8 am with no information about an end time.

Would it be acceptable to email the admin to ask this?

Thanks!!

Are there any current residents at Nebraska or Temple who can share more information about the programs?

For Temple -- they have interest in research. They added the MSD this year, and one of the current residents won the top tier research award @ AAE. Still a balanced school. The school has both research and strong clinical skills. Philadelphia is an energetic place to live.

You should ask them for the end time. But generally interviews end at 4:00 PM. What school is this?

I think it's fine to communicate with the program, though you may want to have some of the residents and faculty that browse this thread to confirm. I have seen other candidates bring their luggage to the interview. Some of them said they checked out of their hotel already, others said they had another interview the next day, and others said they needed to make it back to work. I don't think any member of the program took it negatively because they understand the nature of the cycle and interviewing.

For everyone that took the ADAT. I have been studying, but I am still scoring only about 60-70% on ADAT Knockout exams. Im trying to figure out how comparable this is to the real exam

Are there any current Marquette residents or anyone who had experience interviewing there on here? Please DM me!
