Official PITT Class of 2007 !!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I forgot the part about if you're on a two lane road. If something, (ie: a garbage truck) is blocking the lane for oncoming traffic, no worries. Your lane suddenly becomes their lane. They will just swing over without slowing causing you, the naive out-of-state driver to slam on your brakes or run up onto the sidewalk to avoid a head-on collision.

Pitt has a superlative Orthopedics Department. Freddie Fu is the current Chair. The last I heard Pitt has put more people into Chairmanships of Orthopedics than any other program in the country.

Sunflower,

I moved to Pittsburgh from the Bay Area. Trust me, they are much worse in Pittsburgh. They are definitely not as aggressive but beware if you are walking or bike riding. They absolutely will not yield to pedestrians. I've seen people (on a regular basis) go around a mother pushing a baby stroller through a crosswalk at 40 mph. If someone does yield, they usually have California plates. The corollary (which is pretty funny) is that pedestrians will walk out into the street suddenly without even looking. I'm amazed there aren't 2-3 pedestrian fatalities a day. The infuriating thing after awhile is that you can't predict what other cars on the road will do...be especially wary getting on the freeway...it's not uncommon for them to STOP at the end of the onramp. But other than that Pittsburgh isn't bad.

To answer your question, an "Yinzer" is a native Pittsburgher. It comes from their particular variant of you'all (Texans help me out on the spelling). As in what are yinz gonna do tonight. The also tend to drop "to be" in sentences ie: The carpet needs cleaned [sic]. Don't worry as part of your orientation Dr. Thompson gives an excellent orientation of the history and culture of Pittsburgh (Hell With the Lid Off).

You'll have fun. Pittsburgh and Pitt are both great places and I actually miss both.

They actually stop at the end of the onramps because, in fact, there are stop signs there... Which isn't to say that a stop sign BELONGS at the end of an onramp (and that I don't often curse the imbecil who placed them there), but the drivers are just obeying the signs...
Biking here really isn't that bad - a bunch of my classmates do it daily and have had no problem with traffic...

Not all the on ramps have stop signs...but I agree the guy who decided to put stop signs at the end of on ramps must have had a Ferrari because thats what it takes to get from 0-60 in 15 feet.

How about those detour signs for the Fort Pitt tunnel project, ya gotta love 20 road signs in one place. As an aside...I was flipping through a recent Reader's Digest when I came across a story of dangerous roads. I immediately thought of the Fort Pitt Tunnel when I saw the picture accompanying the article. It showed a road sign with 20 different higways and arrows pointing in different directions. Then I really laughed when I noticed the Keystones on the signs. (Highway markers in Pennsylvania have Keystones)

Are they riding to school? Is there a safe place to lock up the bike? I'll be living pretty close on Centre, so riding would probably be quicker than a bus.

I would definately not park a really expensive looking bike out front of Scaife, but if you get one that looks pretty grungy but rides well it would be perfect... I know of at least one person who got his bike stolen this year, but it was a nice bike.
If you live near Bayard, that is a great road to ride to school on - it gets you halfway up the hill, and is not all that busy, and has some pretty cool houses on it (at least the end near Shadyside)...

Everyone should check out the newest National Geographic, Pittsburgh is featured in an article at the end of the magazine. It focuses on food in Pittsburgh. yum

Also for those in the LA area... one of the PBS stations has been playing a show called Pittsburgh A to Z (produced by WQED, PGH's Public TV station-- former home of Mr. Rogers).

Also, where is everyone living? I'm in the real slim shadyside-- a block away from Walnut...

i've heard that show - I'm going to check TV listings to figure out when it's on next.

anyway, i am living in shadyside right at the corner of Firth and Shady.

see everyone in a week or two! I can't wait!

Doh... I forgot to give my cross streets-- I'm on Howe and Ivy. Apparently next door there's another MS1 moving in. Good times ahead!

Hey,
Unfortunately I had to withdraw from Pitt - I feel kind of bad too. I was going to live in Ruskin-the housing dorm on-campus. I also have heard that another person pulled out so now there are a few one bedroom places available for anyone who needs housing close to campus. Cheers.

Hey Premed888,

Sorry to hear that you won't be going to Pitt this fall. Did you get in the waitlist somewhere else? Anyways, hope you're happy wherever you decide to go.

Hey All,

This is a shot in the dark, but I am moving in on Friday and am planning on getting settled in the week before orientation. I was wondering if anyone else who is moving in early was interested in a pre-orientation get together. I was thinking just meeting up at one of the many bars listed in the Pitt Med Survival Guide. Let me know your thoughts. You can either get back to me on SDN or by email. I would rather not post my email on the bulletin board (unrealistic fear of SPAM), but it should be easy enough to find on the Pitt Med student directory (I am the only student named Hamed). Thanks and hope everyone enjoys their last days of summer.

I will be getting into town tommorow to move into my place in Shadyside. I'm in for a little get together before orientation start. Depending on the number of people who are interested, we could have dinner at our place and then go out. I propose just out of the blue, the night of Monday the 4th if that's good for people. my e-mail is [email protected]. cheers, christo

I fly in on the 5th with my 'rents. My uncle flys in on the 7th. But I would love to hang out with you guys on the 6th... and of course during orientation. I just dodged a major bullet. My movers were really shady-- sent them home. So it looks like I'll have a nice apt with no furniture for the first few weeks of school. Ah the bohemian lifestyle.

Hi, does anyone going to pitt need a place to live. Right know, myself (Amish), and one other pitt med student (Jared) want to sign a lease at a 3bedroom in shadyside, but we need one more person. The Rent comes to 355 a person + utilities. Its a large Victorian House with large bedrooms, a large kitchen, large family room, and just nice overall. We're both clean, enjoy sporting activities, and are pretty flexible on our third roomate. Please email me at [email protected] if your interested. Please dont PM me, i wont get the email then.

I plan on being free just about every night with Monday being the only day in question. I know everyone has different obligations for that week, but since uclachris is the only person to indicate that they can only do one day, I think we should tentatively plan on a get together on the 6th. However, I don't have any prior obligations on any other night, so I would not be opposed to having multiple pre-orientation outings. Let me know your thoughts.

hey guys -

put me down for a tentative yes -- i fly in on the 4th and will just be settling in and chillin' til orientation, so i'd love to get together ... i am living in shadyside with 4 CMU grads (non med students) who have lived in pittsburgh the last 5+ years so they'll probably have some good suggestions as to cool places to go.

on another note, did anyone find the following quote from the 3rd mailing kind of funny? - "You will notice on the orientation schedule that we have planned breaks and refreshment periods. This time is used to get to know one another ... One way to invite conversation is to wear a T-shirt, or other clothing, indicating either your undergraduate institution or perhaps a favorite pastime." i like how they're giving us tips to be social ... 🙂

so anyway, how should we organize these get-togethers? posting? emails? phone?

looking forward to meeting you all,
vivian

I think the best way to organize things would be email and then by phone. I guess I will just post my email since you can't really get more spam than I currently do. [email protected] . Have a good friday everyone!

Hamed

Hey, all. I'm in for a pre-orientation meet and greet. I'll be arriving in town on the 5th, and I'm free for that entire week.

By the way, my two roommates and I have a place on South Aiken just across Baum. Anyone else live out in that direction?

-Kristin

Hey KBCoch! I'm right up the street from you on Centre and Enfield (between a CVS and a PEP Boys). Also, don't forget to include me in any pre-orientation social events. I'll PM my cell phone # to you guys because I won't have my internet connection right away. See you soon!

Hey fellow Pitt Med'ers

I think I finally nailed a place to live. I'll be living in Shayside too! However, I will be moving in around August 6th, so I'll miss any pre-orientation get-together. However, I'm definitely up for some fun during orientation week. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

I have also PMed a few people with my cell # so that I can be kept in the loop about pre-orientation fun. I'll probably be out of email contact during my move.

See everyone soon!
-Kristin

Would it maybe be easier to set up a tentative time and place now, and then call to confirm it? (instead of having to work out all the details with multiple phonings and if people have different ideas as to what they want to do ...)

since most seem to live in shadyside, why don't we check out our own neighborhood? i was thinking of maybe a bar/grill type place - we can get dinner and then see where the night takes us. in the survival guide, there are a couple with patios, which sounds nice ... maybe the harris bar and grill, or walnut grill/shady grove? (I have no idea what these places are like, I'm just throwing out some ideas, let me know what you think!)

i think earlier people were saying wednesday the 6th worked well ... so can we go ahead and say wednesday evening? dinner? (if someone knows the area at all and can suggest a good place, by all means...!)

and who's in, so we know who all to call? ... me, kbcoch, dr o, uclachris, hamedn, indiamacbean ... promethius if you get in on the 6th that means you can join us. 🙂

anyway i will pm you guys my number too ...

see you soon,

-v

Hey hey there!

Sorry if I wasn't clear on my last post, but I will be driving up on August 6th, so I won't be in PGH until mid-afternoon on August 7th. Man, first I miss the second look weekend, and now it seems I might miss the pre-orientation bash. Hopefully I'm not starting a partyless streak here...😉 Anyways, keep me posted on what you ladies and gents are up to in case I somehow hit mach2 and make it up there before i actually start driving.

Well... Let's go with a sit down place for post-dinner drinks. Followed by post-dinner drink mayham. Does that sound good? If not, maybe I'll join you guys later on. Harris Grill is supposed to be good for outdoor-patio-style-eating-- though the long range forcast calls for T-showers.

On Walnut (I haven't really explored around the other streets) I saw several bars/pubs. Some have live music/djs (Cozumel) some have lots of Vid Games (Doc's). I'm pretty much open to anything. I heard there is a Cuban place that is in shadyside-- I haven't had a proper mojito in years.

Let's hammer down soon!

HEHEHE... wouldnt you really have to approach (or exceed) the speed of light for that to happen?

Good luck man! There will be pleanty a bash to be had in the upcoming weeks!

As a write I am sitting in the cozy confines of Hillman Library wishing I had my internet connection in my apartment. I got my ID today which means I can ride the bus for free (woohoo!). Grabbing dinner the 6th soudns awesome. I live on the border of Oakland and Shadyside on the intersection of Fifth and Craig. I think the easiest plan would be to meet at 7:00 in front of the Banana Republic on Walnut (Walnut because it seems to be where the stuff is, and Banana Republic because it should be easy enough to find). I figure we can decide on where to eat and go for post dinner drinks once we get there. It should be easier than trying to find a place that is agreeable with everyone now. Chris if you PM or email me your phone number I will give you a call to let you know where you can meet us. Let me know if you are ok with this plan. I am going to PM a bunch of people my cellphone number now and I am going to try to make it here daily to check SDN and my email. Sorry if this is long winded. Thanks all ad see you soon.

Hey all, just I'd let you all know I'm going to PITT!

Anyhow, I'm moving to Ruskin August 8. I think the location is great, since I'm close to class and also close to all you guys on Shadyside, do any of you know how long of a walk to Shadyside? I know there are bus routes as well.
Does anyone know the bus routes to Shadyside?
Anyhow, look forward to seeing all of you Sunday!
peace

Hi all...i really wanna get into Pitt...just wondering what you guys thought about the process there...if you dont mind me asking, what were your mcats/gpas (just so i get an idea of what the students are like there)? How is the secondary for pitt? Thanks!

Would anyone object to making this thing August 7th so that Promethius can attend?

Why not both? I can't make it on the 7th. My uncle is flying in at 6 and we would probably go and get dinner. So I guess I could make it back for drinks but later on. I say we have some pre-orientation events.

Aug 6th. Shadyside
Aug 7th. Squirrel Hill
Aug 8th ...

That way we can all go when we can go! 🙂

hey!

i've just gotten into pittsburgh and am settling into my new apartment - turns out my roommates have internet. anyway the 7 pm at BR sounds good to me, so i'll see y'all then ... should we invite others on the pittmed forums? just a thought.

-v

oh p.s. promethius told me that his parents will be in town with him and isn't sure if he can meet up but will call if he can? (right? sorry if i'm answering for ya...)

vscarlet took the words right outta my mouth. Thanks for trying to be accommodating Doc Oct, but I have a feeling I may be pretty busy the first few days after I arrive buying furniture and trying to get situated before the white coat ceremony. Go ahead and schedule a day and time that is convenient for everyone else, and if I can make it I'll give one of you a call. Thanks for PMing me your cell phone numbers Pitt Med'ers! Good luck moving in everyone. Now let the good times roll!! 😀

Okay, so we are officially meeting at 7PM in Shady Side in front of Bannana Republic. I'll go ahead and post it on the Pittmed forum too. See you then.😉

unfortunately, I won't be able to make it 🙁 I had to come back home to my parents to get some things for my apt and to wrap up stuff at my job for the summer. Have an awesome time everyone tonight!

Anyway, I'll be back on Friday. Hope to meet some of you then or on Sunday/Monday when orientation kicks off.

Later,
Arun

Woot Woot! Hey everyone. Sorry I won't be able to join in the festivities tonight because I'll probably be getting ready to drive up when the fun starts...🙁 Keep me updated on any other get-togethers you ladies and gents may be planning. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Since we're all going to be mature med students, I propose kicking off any parties one day earlier during the week than in undergrad...on a Wednesday! Check out the Class of 2007 Roster thread. We currently have 15 registered SDN'ers, the most of all med schools so far. Any lurkers out there, add yourselves for some Pitt Med pride! Cheers.

aww man, I missed the postings by just a few hours! I've been super busy settling in PGH since the weekend. Well, I'll see you all at white coat ceremony - can't wait!

Me too. I haven't checked SDN in about a week because I've been busy moving. It sounds like a lot of people are living in Shadyside. Is anyone living in Squirrel Hill besides me? I'm living at Murray and Morrowfield Avenues. I can't wait to meet everyone! See you Sunday.

Hey guys,
I know that when we met Wed, we had talked about the possibility of getting together tonight at my place. I'd still be into that if others are still interested and have some time. I was thinking BYOB starting around 8:30-9:00. Give me a call at 412 362-5816. My address is 728 summerlea#2 which is just off of Walnut St. one block down from S. Aiken. I have a very big but very friendly dog so if anyone is allergice consider yourself warned. cheers, christo
